LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore centerfielder Sean Smith (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) singled home the game-winning run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to lift Savannah A&D to a 4-3 win over Washington and Lee in non-conference baseball action on Saturday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

Savannah Art & Design (15-23), which evened the score at 3-3 in the seventh inning, started its game-winning rally with a two-out double by junior pitcher Rich Fallat (Seven Hills, Ohio/Normandy). Smith, the next batter, then scored him with a single to right-centerfield.

The game, which was twice delayed by lightning and rain, saw the Generals jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) both reached base, senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) hit a three-run homer over the wall in rightfield.

W&L (28-8) chased SCAD starter, senior Harold Jones (Miami, Fla./Miami Coral Park), after one inning, but Fallat (3-1) came on in relief and threw eight innings of shutout ball to earn the win.

Junior righthander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) allowed three runs over seven innings of work for the Generals. Hanson (2-1), who came in and threw the final two innings, was saddled with the loss after allowing one run on two hits.

Smith and freshman second baseman Josh Eastwood (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) went 2-for-4 and 2-for-5, respectively, to lead the Bees.

For W&L, senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) was 2-for-4, while sophomore leftfielder Warren Hunter (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) was 2-for-3.

The Generals have now concluded their regular season and will await word as to whether or not they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee scored five unearned runs to upend Savannah Art & Design, 7-2, in non-conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (28-7) pushed three runs across in the bottom of the second inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. After senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and junior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) each reached with back-to-back singles, junior leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) attempted a sacrifice bunt to move them up. However, SCAD junior catcher Jarrod Norrell (Smyrna, Ga./Campbell) fielded the bunt and overthrew first base, allowing both Littlehale and Mulhern to score and moving Kagey to third. Sophomore designated hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) then lofted a sacrifice fly to score Kagey.

W&L provided junior lefthander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) with two insurance runs in both the fourth and eighth innings.

The Bees (14-23) managed their two runs on RBI singles by a pair of freshmen, shortstop James O’Connell (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head) and third baseman Chris Rud (Savannah, Ga./Bradwell Institute), in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Dean improved to 8-2 on the season with the win after allowing the two runs on 11 hits and no walks over eight innings. Bees starter, senior Brad Kempson (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern), took the loss to fall to 7-7 after throwing a complete game. He was touched for seven runs (two earned) on nine hits.

Bausch, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. Littlehale was 3-for-4.

O’Connell’s 3-for-4 day led the Bees, while freshman second baseman Josh Eastwood (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) was 2-for-4.

The Generals wrap up their regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they play host to the Bees.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) scored in the bottom of the ninth inning when Villa Julie junior leftfielder Jason Bungori (Calvert Hall) misplayed junior designated hitter Bryan Mulhern’s (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) single to lift the Generals to a 4-3 win on Wednesday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

The Mustangs (14-19) got their only offense in the top of the first inning as they pushed across three runs. Freshman third baseman Matt Waltrop (Dulaney) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to right to put Villa Julie up 1-0. Then, senior designated hitter Lee Jamison (Lynnfield, Mass.) hit a two-out, two-run triple to make it 3-0.

From that point, W&L junior righthander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) blanked the Mustangs by allowing five hits the rest of the way.

After getting one run in the bottom half of the first inning, the Generals (27-7) evened the score in the second. Sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean), who had doubled to lead off the inning, scored on senior shortstop Michael Hanson’s (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) sacrifice fly to rightfield to make it 3-2. Junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) then drilled a double to score sophomore rightfielder Chris Chaplin (Midlothian, Va./James River).

The game remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the ninth when Gladysz scored the game-winner.

Wert (7-1) threw a complete game, surrendering three runs on nine hits and two walks. Villa Julie righthander Jim Whisman (Glen Burnie) went 8 1/3 innings and was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on 10 hits and five walks.

Allain, Hanson and Mulhern each had two hits to lead the Generals. Freshman rightfielder Zach Moye (Carver A&T) was 3-for-5 to pace the Mustangs, while Jamison was 2-for-4.

W&L is back on the diamond on Friday afternoon when it hosts Savannah Art & Design for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Virginia Wesleyan scored runs in the first five innings and defeated Washington and Lee, 11-3, to capture the 2003 ODAC baseball championship on Sunday at Ernine Shore Field.

Earlier, the Generals (26-7) had edged the Marlins 5-4 in 12 innings to force a deciding game.

Virginia Wesleyan (30-7) went up 2-0 in the first inning when rightfielder T.J. Adams hit a two-run inside-the-park home run. From there, the Marlins added added one run in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and three in the seventh to secure the ODAC title.

W&L managed its only offense in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal), junior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) and senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) all hit one-run singles.

VWC pitchers Chris Rivera (2-1) and Zach Baker combined to hold the Generals to three runs on 11 hits and two walks.

Junior righthander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) fell to 7-3 after being touched for eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits and three walks.

Adams (3-for-5, three runs, four RBIs) and second baseman Brandon Hill (2-for-5, two RBIs) paced the Marlins offense. Gladysz was 3-for-5 for the Generals, while Kagey and senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) each went 2-for-5.

Gladysz, junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) each earned all-tournament accolades for their performances over the weekend.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Villa Julie for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) drove in junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) with two outs in the top of the 12th inning to lift Washington and Lee to a 5-4 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at Ernie Shore Field.

The Generals (26-6) will be looking to capture their first-ever ODAC Championship when they square off one last time against the Marlins at 4:30 p.m., on Sunday afternoon.

W&L struck first in the top of the third when both Gladysz and senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) crossed the plate on a two-base throwing error by Virginia Wesleyan shortstop Paul Johnson.

The top-seeded Marlins (30-7) answered in the bottom of the fifth inning. Third baseman Michael Snapp led off with a double and came around to score on centerfielder Dan Sellers’ home run to right-center.

After the Marlins went up 3-2 in the sixth inning, the Generals forced the game into extra-innings on freshman third baseman Taylor McConnell’s (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) two-out, one-run single to right.

Junior righthander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) improved to 6-1 on the season after allowing one run on three hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings of relief work.

Chris Rivera (1-1) was tagged with the loss for the Marlins after relieving starter Derrick Rawlings, who threw 10 innings.

Junior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) paced the Generals and established a new school record for hits in season by going 3-for-5 with two runs. He now has 52 hits on the year, surpassing the previous mark of 51 set by Christian Batcheller‘00 in 1997. Gladysz was 2-for-6.

Johnson, who was 3-for-6 with one RBI, and Sellers (2-for-5, two RBIs) led the Marlins at the plate.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team advanced to the championship round of the ODAC baseball tournament on Saturday evening with a 6-4 win over Bridgewater.

The Generals (25-6) will take on Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at 1:00 pm and must win two from the Marlins in order to claim their first-ever ODAC Championship. Virginia Wesleyan defeated W&L, 7-2, in the early game on Saturday afternoon, handing the Generals their only tournament loss.

In the win over the Eagles, the Generals struck for four runs in the third inning, three of which were unearned. Sophomore designated hitter Chris Chaplin (Midlothian, Va./James River) led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to second when junior second baseman Austin Allain’s (Weston, Mass./Weston) ball to center was misplayed. Senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) then recorded a two-run double to left center scoring Chaplin and Allain. After an infield single by senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) moved Gladysz to third, junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) brought him home as an infield error allowed Gladysz to score. Sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) then ended the scoring in the inning as he doubled home Mulhern.

An RBI double by freshman third baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) added a fifth run in the fifth inning, but the Eagles began to chip away at the lead scoring two runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to make the score 5-4.

The Generals added another run in the eighth inning as senior shortstop/pitcher Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) doubled to right and later scored on a wild pitch. Hanson pitched the final three innings to pick up the save, preserving the win for junior righthander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) who moved his record to 5-1 on the season. Wert tossed six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits.

At the plate, Bausch led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and a triple. Chaplin finished 2-for-3 while Gladysz knocked home two runs with his double.

Bridgewater was led by first baseman Todd Lewis, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Andy Cave was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) in 2 2/3 innings of work. He fell to 1-2 on the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Sophomore righthander Adam Hamilton threw a complete game and allowed just six hits as Virginia Wesleyan advanced to the ODAC Championship with a 7-2 win over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Ernie Shore Field.

Hamilton, who improved to 8-1 on the season, allowed the Generals (24-6) to score two runs in the first but then shut them out over the final eight frames.

W&L struck first in the bottom of the second inning when junior pitcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) recorded his single-season school-record 46th RBI on a single to rightfield. Senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) then crossed the plate for the Generals’ second run when the Marlins were unable to cleanly handle catcher Zach Bausch’s (Vienna, Va./McLean) roller to shortstop.

Mulhern blanked the Marlins for the first three innings, but got touched for two runs in the top of the fourth inning on first baseman Danny Rosendale’s two-run double.

Virginia Wesleyan took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Rightfielder T.J. Adams reached on an error and later scored on catcher Mike Supa’s double. Supa then came home on a W&L throwing error to make it 4-2, VWC.

The Marlins added three insurance runs in the eighth inning to provide the final margin.

The Generals, who had no players record more than one hit, were led by Mulhern and Littlehale, who each went 1-for-3.

Mulhern (3-1) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk in six innings.

Supa and Rosendale each had two RBIs and combined to go 4-for-7 to pace the Marlins’ offense.

W&L will face the winner of this afternoon’s Bridgewater-Lynchburg contest tonight at 7:00 pm for the right to face Virginia Wesleyan in tomorrow’s championship round.

The win improves the Generals’ mark to 24-5 on the season and establishes a new single-season standard for wins, eclipsing the previous mark of 23 which was set in 2001.

Senior Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) scored the game-winning run after reaching base on an error. Junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) sacrificed him over to second and he advanced to third on senior first baseman Brian Gladysz’s (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) grounder to short. From there, Littlehale knocked Hanson in with a slow-roller to short and beat the throw to first base with a head-first slide. Freshman third baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) gave the Generals breathing room by following junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern’s (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) single with an RBI-single to centerfield.

W&L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) scampered home on a wild pitch. However, Bridgewater (20-17) battled back to even it at 1-apiece in the bottom half of the sixth on rightfielder Scott Hearn’s RBI-double.

Hanson, who started and played the first seven innings at shortstop, relieved junior righthander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) in the eighth inning and threw two scoreless frames to improve to 3-0 on the season. Kagey exited after rationing the Eagles to one run on four hits and three walks over seven innings. He recorded eight strikeouts.

Dan Proctor (5-2) took the loss for Bridgewater after surrendering one run on one hit in 2 1/3 innings of action. No Eagles managed more than one hit.

W&L and Virginia Wesleyan, the two remaining unbeaten teams in the tournament, square off Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Washington and Lee junior lefthander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) threw a complete-game five-hitter and the Generals’ offense banged out 20 hits in a 16-1 win over Lynchburg in a first-round ODAC Tournament baseball game on Thursday in Winston-Salem, N.C. The win ups W&L’s mark to 23-5, tying the 2001 squad’s mark for wins in a season.

Lynchburg put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the first inning to mount an early threat. However, Dean recorded the first of his eight strikeouts and retired catcher Gary Schafer on a grounder to senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) to escape unscathed.

The Generals then took a lead they would never relinquish in the bottom of the first inning as junior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and sophomore designated hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) each hit two-out, two-run doubles.

After adding a run in the second inning, W&L scored four more in the bottom of the third to take a 9-0 lead. Bausch again doubled home two runs, while sophomore rightfielder Warren Hunter (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) hit a two-run single to rightfield.

The Generals kept up the onslaught by adding one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and four more in the ninth, highlighted by Hanson’s three-run homer to centerfield.

Bausch’s 3-for-4, four RBI-day led W&L. Mulhern finished 4-for-6 with three RBI and now has 45 RBI on the season tying the W&L single-season mark set by Christian Batcheller ’00 in 1997.

Dean (7-2) allowed one run on five hits in notching his sixth complete game of the season and lowering his ERA to a team-best 1.49.

Lynchburg (19-18) lefthander Brett McColley (5-6) took the loss after getting touched for nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits and two walks in two innings of work. Third baseman John Garrison accounted for the Hornets’ only run with a solo homer left.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) hit a grand slam and a two-run homer and drove in a school-record eight runs to lift the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 14-3 win over Guilford in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. The win gave the Generals a split after the Quakers took the first game, 5-4.

W&L (22-5, 15-3 ODAC) broke the second game open in the top of the fifth. Already ahead 6-0, W&L doubled its advantage by pushing six more runs across, four of which were courtesy of Mulhern’s grand slam to left-centerfield.

In the ninth inning Mulhern set the new single-game standard for RBIs with his second home run of the game, and team-best sixth on the season, a two-run shot to center that plated senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep).

Junior righthander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) got the win, improving to 7-2 on the season after surrendering one run on eight hits over seven innings. Guilford starter Dave Shaffer fell to 6-5 after getting touched for six runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of work.

The Quakers (26-12, 12-6 ODAC) picked up their fifth consecutive win in the first game when they took advantage of two Generals’ errors to score four unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Trailing 5-2 in the top of the seventh inning, W&L mustered a two-out rally and provided the final margin on junior second baseman Austin Allain’s (Weston, Mass./Weston) two-RBI single.

Junior lefthander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) took the loss, falling to 6-2 after allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk in six innings of work. Senior Mike Goettler upped his mark to 8-1 on the season after rationing W&L to three runs on four hits and four walks over six innings.

Mulhern went 4-for-8 on the afternoon, while Gladysz was 4-for-6 with two RBIs. Allain finished 3-for-9 with five RBIs and three runs.

The second-seeded Generals begin play in the ODAC Tournament on Thursday at Ernie Shore Field in Winston-Salem, N.C., when they face Lynchburg at 3:00 p.m.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Southern Virginia freshman righthander Brian Rudd (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) threw a complete game, allowing six hits and one walk while inducing five double plays, to earn a 5-1 win over Washington and Lee in non-conference baseball action on Thursday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

The Knights (4-16) got on the board in the top of the first inning as freshman second baseman Paul Lawrence (Centerville, Utah) led the game off with a home run to rightfield. SVU, which outhit W&L 14-6, later added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and capped its scoring in the top of the ninth on senior designated hitter B.J. Hanley’s (Westminster, Md.) solo shot to right.

The Generals (21-4) mustered their only offense in the bottom of the eighth inning when junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) led off with a single. After sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) doubled to put runners on second and third, freshman third baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) reached on an error to plate Mulhern.

Junior righthander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings on the mound to fall to 4-1 on the season.

SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team improved to 21-3 overall, 14-2 in the ODAC with a 5-1 win over Roanoke on Tuesday evening at Salem Memorial Stadium.

The Generals struck first in the top of the second when sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) hit a solo home run, his third of the season, over the leftfield wall.

Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) then brought home junior pitcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) in the top of the fourth when he drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

After Roanoke (8-15, 1-17 ODAC) used three singles in the bottom of the fifth to plate its lone run, W&L came back with a score of its own as junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) singled home freshman third baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal). Ahead 3-1 at that point, the Generals overcame a pair of baserunning blunders and added two insurance runs in the seventh inning for the final margin.

Bausch’s 2-for-4, two RBI-night led W&L. Hanson, senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and junior leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) each finished with three hits apiece.

Second baseman Robby Hoopes went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead Roanoke, which managed just five hits on the evening.

Mulhern threw seven innings, allowing the one run on five hits and no walks to improve to 3-0 on the season. Ben Defibaugh (2-1) surrendered three runs on nine hits over six innings and was saddled with the loss for the Maroons.

W&L, which clinched at least a second-place finish in the ODAC with the win, wraps up its regular-season ODAC slate with a doubleheader at Guilford on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) went 4-for-8 with three RBI and the Generals’ pitching staff never allowed a Lynchburg runner to advance past second base as Washington and Lee swept a doubleheader from the Hornets, 1-0 and 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field. The wins gave W&L Head Coach Jeff Stickley his 200th and 201st career wins, upping his overall record to 201-232-3 over 17 seasons.

In the opening game, neither team could push across a run until Allain singled home freshman third baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) with the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. An error by Lynchburg junior second baseman Anthony Palmisano (Huddleston, Va./James River) with two outs kept the inning alive to set up Allain’s heroics.

Junior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) upped his record to 6-1 on the season by tossing a complete-game two-hitter, extending his scoreless inning streak to 16 2/3. Allain finished 2-for-4 with one RBI at the dish.

Lynchburg (14-14, 8-7) senior left hander Brent McColley (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) fell to 5-4 on the season, tossing 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits.

In the second game, the Generals (20-3, 13-2) pushed across two runs in the first inning, two more in the third, and created distance with four runs in the fourth inning. Allain again had the hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) also went 2-for-4 with two RBI at the plate.

Junior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) tossed seven innings of three-hit ball to improve to 6-2 on the season. He struck out seven and walked three.

LC senior right hander Mike Ranson (Tega Cay, S.C./Olentangy) fell to 5-4 on the season, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest. The game will be played at Salem Memorial Stadium, home of the Salem Avalanche.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee used an 11-run fifth inning to erase an early 5-0 deficit and cruised to a 17-6 win over Roanoke in ODAC baseball action on Tuesday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

Trailing 5-4 in the fifth, W&L (18-3, 11-2) banged out 10 hits and used three Roanoke errors to push across 11 runs to take a commanding 15-5 lead. Junior rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and freshman third baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) were the catalysts as they combined for seven RBI. Mulhern twice hit two-run doubles and Gosselink homered for the second time this season, a three-run crank over the left field foul pole.

Roanoke (5-14, 0-11) jumped on the Generals early, using a two-out rally to push across three runs in the top of the first inning as freshman catcher Brandon Wilson (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) followed up back-to-back doubles with a two-run home run. Then, an inning later, the Maroons added two more runs to go up 5-0, setting the stage for the Generals’ comeback.

Junior Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) got the win for W&L in relief. He improves to 5-2 on the season after throwing 4 2/3 innings and rationing Roanoke to one hit. Freshman Justin Bradley (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell) falls to 0-3 on the season after allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits in 1 1/3 innings for the Maroons.

Pacing the Generals were Mulhern, who was 3-for-5 with four RBI, and senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep), who was 5-for-6 with three RBI. Gosselink and junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) each drove in three runs.

Roanoke was led by freshman first baseman Sean Sturgill (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) and freshman rightfielder Brandon Coates (Gladys, Va./William Campbell), who each went 2-for-4.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) fired a four-hit, complete-game shutout to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 3-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field. VWC bounced back in the second game, ending W&L’s school-record 15-game winning streak with a 7-3 decision.

In the first game, W&L (17-3, 10-2 ODAC) pushed across its’ first run in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) drove in junior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) with a single. An inning later, the Generals struck for two more runs as Mulhern hit a two-run, bases-loaded single to left.

Dean improves to 5-1 on the season and lowered his team-best ERA to 1.81. Sophomore Jason Jarrett (Westminster, Md./Westminster) threw six innings for the Marlins, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks to fall to 4-1 on the season.

In game 2, the second batter of the contest, junior shortstop Paul Johnson (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook), hit a solo shot to left field to score the first of the Marlins’ (18-5, 9-1 ODAC) five first-inning runs.

Virginia Wesleyan added insurance runs in the third and fifth innings, and the Generals were never able to cut the lead to less than four.

Sophomore starter Adam Hamilton (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and freshman Zach Baker (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) combined to hold W&L to three runs on 12 hits and three walks. Baker picked up the win to go to 1-0 on the season.

Junior starter Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) was saddled with the loss (4-2) after surrendering six runs (two earned) on five hits in three innings of work.

Offensively, the Generals were led by Mulhern who went 6-for-8 with four RBI on the afternoon. Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) was 3-for-9 and hit a leadoff home run, his fourth of the season, in the second game. Senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) was 4-for-8.

Pacing VWC were senior designated hitter John Kasiski (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River), who was 4-for-6, and senior rightfielder T.J. Adams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem), who was 3-for-7.

The Generals’ (16-2) power display began in the bottom of the first inning when Gladysz hit a solo shot with two outs. After the next batter, senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook), was hit by a pitch, Mulhern hit a two-run bomb to dead centerfield.

Gladysz went deep again in the bottom of the second, this time drilling a three-run shot to left field and helping W&L take an 8-1 lead after two innings.

After a scoreless third, the Generals put the game out of reach by pushing four more runs across in the fourth, three of which came courtesy of Mulhern’s second two-run blast to centerfield.

Junior pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) got the win for W&L to improve to 4-0 on the season. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks, while ringing up five strikeouts.

Mulhern (4-for-4) and Gladysz (2-for-4) were the offensive catalysts for the Generals. Junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) and sophomore right fielder Chris Chaplin (Midlothian, Va./James River) each added two hits apiece.

Senior starter Jonathan Pollock (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) was tagged with the loss (0-2) for the Hawks (2-3), who made seven errors in the field behind him.

At the plate, Pollock and senior leftfielder David McIntosh (West Caldwell, N.J./Morristown Beard) were the best with the bat, each going 2-for-4.

W&L puts its school-record 14 game winning streak on the line again on Saturday afternoon when it hosts ODAC-rival Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader at 12:00 pm.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Washington and Lee used one run apiece in both the eighth and ninth innings to snatch a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Bridgewater on Tuesday at Jopson Field.

The win gives the Generals (15-2, 9-1 ODAC) their first regular-season sweep of the Eagles since 1983, and improves W&L’s school-record win streak to 13 games.

The Generals got on the board first when they pushed across one run in the top of the fourth. Junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) led off the inning with a single and scored on junior pitcher Bryan Mulhern’s (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) two-out double.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles (13-9, 6-2 ODAC) struck for two runs as first baseman Todd Lewis singled home leftfielder Kyle Walling and designated hitter Jimmy Graham plated rightfielder Scott Hearn with a double.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the eighth, W&L rallied to even the score when senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook), who had singled to lead off the inning, scored on a double by Mulhern. An inning later, Allain scored the game-winner when senior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) drove him in with a single.

Senior Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) earned his first win of the season (1-0) after three innings of shutout relief. Mulhern, who started, threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

Mulhern’s 2-for-4 day with two RBI led the Generals’ offense. Allain and Gladysz also collected two hits apiece.

Dustin Jones (4-1), who threw two innings in relief, was saddled with the loss for BC. Offensively, Graham’s 2-for-4 day with one RBI paced the Eagles.

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) banged out the 165th hit of his career, surpassing Matt Kozora ‘02 as Washington and Lee’s all-time hits leader in the second game of a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday. W&L (14-2, 8-1 ODAC) upped its school-record winning streak to 12 by defeating the Royals, 7-1, in the first game and 15-2 in the nightcap.

Hanson was 5-for-9 on the day with three RBI and four runs, and broke the record with an RBI single in the sixth inning of the second game.

In Game 1, senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook), junior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and sophomore third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) each had two hits to lead W&L.

The Generals (9-2) struck for two unearned runs in the first inning, but the Mounties evened the contest in the second when rightfielder Steve Walko (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) hit a two-run triple.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when W&L freshman third baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) hit his first career home run, a two-run shot to left. Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) followed Gosselink with a double to left and scored the first of three more unearned runs in the inning.

After Mt. Aloysius scored three times in the fifth inning, the Generals added one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the final margin.

Ahead 2-0, the Generals added five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-0 advantage over the Tigers in Game 1. W&L then added one, two and two runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings respectively, as it took advantage of five Tigers’ errors.

Junior pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) went all seven innings for the Generals, allowing four hits and one run. He surrendered two walks and struck out six, improving to 2-1 on the season. Kagey (2-1) went eight innings to pick up the win, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked three and had nine strike outs. Sophomore Jerry Shank (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) got the loss for the Tigers after giving up four runs (two earned) in four innings. He is now 0-2 on the season.

The Eagles scored first as shortstop Matt Lemire scored on an RBI single by first baseman Jay Quintana in the third inning.

The Generals then broke the game open in the fourth inning. Junior leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) and junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) both recorded RBI singles, while senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) served a two-run single. Sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) also notched an RBI double in the inning.

EMORY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team used a no-hitter by junior pitcher Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) in the second game of a double-header to split with Emory & Henry on Sunday afternoon. The Wasps won the first game, 8-5, before the Generals stormed back for a 26-1 win in the nightcap.

Kagey’s no-hitter was the second of his career and the eighth by a Washington and Lee player since 1907. In the win, W&L pounded out a total of 28 hits led by senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook), who went 5-for-6 with a home run and six RBI. Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) went 4-for-5 with four RBI.

Kagey pitched all seven innings, striking out 13 while allowing just one walk. The win upped his record to 1-1 on the season. The Generals (3-2, 1-1) committed three errors in the game, allowing the Wasps to plate an unearned run in the third inning.

The Eagles, who scored at least one run in the first six innings, led 3-0 after three frames. However, W&L bounced back to even the score at 3-3 with three runs in the top of the fourth. Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) singled home junior pitcher Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett), while a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) and a bases-loaded walk to senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) accounted for the other runs.

The Eagles responded immediately in the home half of the fourth, sending four more runs across on four hits and one Generals’ error. They added one run apiece in both the fifth and sixth innings for the final tally.

Hanson banged out three hits and drove in one run to lead the W&L (1-1) offense. Kagey, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, allowed 10 hits and eight runs (six earned) in five innings on the mound.

Emory second baseman Michael Sayegh went 4-for-5 with three RBI to power the Eagles. Leftfielder Kyle Foster (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and third baseman Andrew Pinckney (2-for-4, 1 RBI) also made solid contributions.

W&L wraps up its swing through Atlanta on Thursday when it plays at Oglethorpe (3:00 pm).

W&L BASEBALL DROPS OGLETHORPE, 13-1, IN SEASON-OPENER

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) hit a leadoff home run and junior pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) allowed one run in eight innings as the Washington and Lee baseball team won its season-opener, 13-1, over Oglethorpe on Monday in Atlanta, Ga.

Hanson staked the Generals (1-0) to a 1-0 lead when he took Oglethorpe starter Brad Sims deep in his first at-bat of the season. He then singled and scored in the third inning as W&L pushed out to a 3-0 advantage.

Dean surrendered the Stormy Petrels’ only run in the third as they pulled within 3-1, before combining with junior Michael Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) to hold them scoreless the rest of the way. Dean gave up six hits in eight innings of work, striking out eight with no walks.

Senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) had a game-high four hits (4-for-5) and scored two runs, while junior second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) went 2-for-7 with two RBI to pace the Generals.

W&L is in action again on Tuesday when it plays at Emory with action slated to get underway at 2:00 pm.
