W&L BASEBALL FALLS TO VWC, 12-8, IN ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Washington and Lee recorded a 4-3 victory over Virginia Wesleyan to force a second game in the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament on Sunday afternoon, but fell to the Marlins in game two, 12-8.

The decision marks the second straight ODAC runner-up finish for W&L after the Generals finished behind Virginia Wesleyan in the 2003 ODAC Tournament. Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison), senior right fielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadd’s Ford, Pa./Unionville), senior left fielder Paul Sibley (St. Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep), junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) and freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) were all named to the 2004 ODAC All-Tournament team for their performance in the Generals Championship run.

In game one the Marlins took a 3-0 lead following the top of the second inning, but saw that lead evaporate after W&L sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) connected on a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 3-3.

In the seventh and game deciding inning, Sibley led off the frame with a single and advanced to second compliments of a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston). Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) brought Sibley home in the next at-bat with a double down the left field line.

Dean recorded his second complete-game victory of the tournament and set the W&L season record for wins in a season in improving to 9-2, after notching five strikeouts and holding Virginia Wesleyan to 10 hits. Gosselink, Sibley, Bausch and freshman designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) all recorded two hits for the Generals.

In game two the Marlins again took an early lead with an 8-4 advantage following the second inning, but again saw W&L climb back into striking distance. The Generals got as close as 10-8 in the top of the eighth inning, but couldn’t maintain the late game surge as Virginia Wesleyan added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Bausch went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored to lead W&L, while five other Generals recorded a pair of hits. Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) fell to 6-3 after giving up three hits and four runs in the first inning.

Washington and Lee wraps up the 2004 season with a 21-16 overall record.

W&L BASEBALL TOPS HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, 6-5

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Washington and Lee advanced to the ODAC Championship for the second straight season as the Generals defeated Hampden-Sydney, 6-5, in the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament on Saturday evening at the Lynchburg City Stadium.

The Generals (20-15) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead, but saw the Tigers tie the game at 5-5 with three runs in the top of the fourth, and one run in the sixth and eighth frames.

Washington and Lee answered in the bottom of the eighth with the go ahead run.

Senior right hander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) started the game for the Generals and held Hampden-Sydney to seven hits with six strikeouts before freshman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) took over mound duties in the eighth to secure his first victory (1-2) of the season. Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) stepped in for the final two outs of the ninth inning and picked up his third save of the season.

Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored to lead the Generals, while Edwards hit 2-for-5 with one run scored. Freshman designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) added to the W&L offense with a home run and a game-high three RBI.

Hampden-Sydney sophomore Bryan Mangas fell to 1-4 on the season after taking over pitching duties in the second inning and giving up the go-ahead run. Junior third baseman Jonathon Vaughan led the Tigers from the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBI.

The Generals look to win their first-ever ODAC Championship when they take on defending champion Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

W&L BASEBALL DOWNS LYNCHBURG, 6-2

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Washington and Lee sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) went 2-for-3 with three RBI as the Generals eliminated Lynchburg from the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament with a 6-2 decision on Saturday afternoon at the Lynchburg City Stadium.

Lynchburg took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning but W&L (19-15) tied the score with a run in the third and took control of the lead for good with three runs in the fifth.

In the fifth inning the Generals took the lead as senior right hander Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) hit a sacrifice fly to left field and scored sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal). Freshman right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) brought home the eventual winning run with a ground out to third base, allowing freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) to slip home. McConnell finished W&L’s scoring in the canto with a single to left field that scored junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean).

Washington and Lee added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Lynchburg could only manage one run in the top of the ninth, setting the final score at 6-2.

Mulhern (3-3) recorded the complete-game victory with four strikeouts. Senior left fielder Paul Sibley rounded out W&L’s multiple-hit performers with a 2-for-4 showing from the plate.

Lynchburg sophomore left hander Derek Creger (6-3) suffered the loss after allowing eight hits by the Generals.
The Generals advance to play Hampden-Sydney tonight at 7:15 p.m.

W&L BASEBALL FALLS TO HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, 6-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. -Hampden-Sydney College defeated Washington and Lee, 6-4 in game six of the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament on Friday evening at the Lynchburg City Stadium.

The Generals (18-15) were the first to alter the scoreboard when senior right fielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) connected on a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers (18-17-1) quickly regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first.

Washington and Lee tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the six inning, but Hampden-Sydney responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for all the runs it would need on the night. The Generals managed one more run in the top of the seventh inning, but Tigers starter Jayson Hanky (5-2) held W&L to no runs in the final two innings for the complete-game victory.

Washington and Lee was led by junior catcher Zach Bausch(Vienna, Va./McLean), who was 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored.  Freshman designated hitter David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) rounded out the Generals multiple-hit performer with a 2-for-5 showing from the plate. Mulhern’s homer marked his ninth of the year and tied the school record for homeruns in a season.

Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) recorded nine strikeouts, but fell to 6-2 on the season after giving up 12 hits.

The Tigers were led by Chris Padgett who was 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Warren Poirier went 2-for-4 with the bat with a run scored while right fielder Andy Watts hit 2-for-5 with a run scored.  

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they take on Lynchburg College at 3:00 p.m.

W&L BASEBALL EDGES LYNCHBURG, 4-3

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Washington and Lee senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) threw a complete-game eight-hitter, striking out 12 and giving up no walks, as the Generals defeated Lynchburg, 4-3, in the first-round of the ODAC Tournament on Thursday at the Lynchburg City Stadium.

In addition to upping his season record to 8-2 and tying the W&L record for wins in a season for the second time in his career, Dean broke the school record for strikeouts in a career. He takes over the record with 227 career strikeouts, surpassing the previous mark of 222 set by Bob Weston (1996-1999).

The Generals (18-14) held a 3-0 lead after opening the game with a run in the top of the first and two runs in the fourth, but saw the Hornets (29-10) battle back to within 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth frame.
In the top of the seventh inning freshman second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill) led of the frame with a walk, then advanced to second on the next at bat as senior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) laid down a sacrifice bunt. Lynchburg starter Jay Moore then retired junior designated hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) for the second out of the inning, but freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) connected on a double to left field in the next at-bat to drive in the eventual winning run.

The Hornets added another run to the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh, but would get no closer as Dean fanned four of the last six batters.

Edwards led the Generals with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate with one RBI and one run scored, while Mulhern went 2-for-4 on the day. Bausch, senior left fielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) and senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) all connected on one hit and one RBI.

Moore (9-4) suffered the loss after giving up nine hits and three walks. Second baseman Anthony Palmpisano, right fielder Chris Knowles and catcher Kevin Dwan all recorded two hits for the Hornets, while third baseman Sean Ranson connected on a home run.

The Generals return to action on Friday when they play the winner of the Bridgewater and Hampden-Sydney opening round match-up at 7:00 p.m.

W&L BASEBALL SWEPT BY HAMPDEN-SYDNEY

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Hampden-Sydney sophomore Tommy Burk connected on a single in the bottom of the eleventh inning and scored freshman Andy Watts to push the Tigers past Washington and Lee, 3-2, in game one of the teams’ ODAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday. Hampden Sydney defeated the Generals, 11-10, in game two.

In game one, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but W&L tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the fifth inning.

Senior right hander Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) suffered the loss (2-3) after taking over mound duties in the tenth inning and giving up two hits and the go ahead run. Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) pitched the first nine innings of the contest, holding the Tigers to five hits while notching two strikeouts and two walks.

Sophomore right hander John Schoenholtz threw the first 10 innings for Hampden-Sydney, holding W&L to five hits with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Jayson Hanky notched the win after giving up just one hit in the eleventh frame.

In game two, the Generals (17-14, 11-7) held a 10-8 lead in the eighth inning, but saw the game slip away as the the Tigers (16-17-1, 11-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth and the winning run in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a W&L error.

Freshman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) fell to 0-2 on the season after giving up the final run of the game. Senior left hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) and senior right hander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) both pitched four innings for the Generals, giving up seven hits and recording two strikeouts apiece.

Freshman designated hitter David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) both recorded three hits for W&L while sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) went 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBI. Mulhern tied the Generals’ team record for home runs in a game for the fourth time in his career with two solo shots over the fence.

Sophomore right hander Jason Burton recorded the win after holding W&L to one hit in its final at bat, while senior right fielder Josh Walton went 3-for-5 from the plate with a game-high four RBI.

The Generals return to action on Thursday when they play in the opening round of the 2004 ODAC Tournament in Lynchburg, Va., against an opponent yet to be determined.

W&L BASEBALL DOWNS ROANOKE, 3-1

SALEM, Va. - Senior right hander Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) held Roanoke to just six hits with four strikeouts through seven innings of work as Washington and Lee defeated the Maroons, 3-1, in ODAC baseball action on Wednesday evening.

Washington and Lee (17-12, 11-5) broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the six inning when sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) connected on a two-out double to centerfield and drove in senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston). Mulhern drew a walk in the next at-bat before junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) singled to right field and sent Gosselink home for the 2-0 lead.

Roanoke (16-16, 7-9) answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Generals were the last to alter the scoreboard as Allain grounded out to second in the top of the ninth and allowed sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) to slip home.

Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) took over mound dutes for W&L in the eighth and earned his second save of the season after holding the Maroons to just one hit in the final two frames.

McConnell led the Generals with a 2-for-3 showing from the plate with one run scored, while sophomore centerfielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) both connected on two hits for W&L.

Roanoke freshman right hander Jonathan Wills notched eight strikeouts on the night, but suffered the loss after allowing six hits and two runs in seven innings of work. Sophomores Sean Sturgill and Kirk Dent both had two hits for the Maroons.

W&L BASEBALL SWEPT BY WEST VIRGINIA TECH

LEXINGTON, Va. - West Virginia Tech sophomore John Sullivan hit a one-out, sacrifice fly to right in the top of the seventh inning to score junior John Hanson and edge Washington and Lee, 3-2, in game one of the teams’ baseball doubleheader on Sunday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field. The Golden Bears earned the sweep with a 7-1 victory over the Generals in game two.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, W&L tied the game as freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) took advantage of a miss-throw by the Golden Bears junior catcher Mike Coleman and slipped home.

The run proved to be the last of the game for the Generals, however, as sophomore right hander Levi Merritt held W&L to just one hit in the final two innings. Merrit earned the complete-game victory after giving up just six hits and fanning seven Generals.

Freshman designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) led W&L from the plate with a 2-for-3 performance that included his second home run of the weekend. Senior Bryan Mulhern (Chadd's Ford, Pa./Unionville) suffered the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season.

In game two W&L (16-12) struck first as junior designated hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) connected on his 11th double the season and drove in senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) in the bottom of the first inning.

The Golden Bears (20-17) answered with one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings, and four runs in the fifth inning to set the final score at 7-1. Junior Doug Brown earned the win after holding the Generals to five hits in five innings on the mound.

Bausch went 3-for-3 with one RBI to lead W&L offensively, while Edwards gave up seven hits and three runs in falling to 0-1 on the season.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Roanoke for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

W&L BASEBALL SWEEPS GUILFORD

LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) set the school record for shutouts in a season with three, as Washington and Lee blanked Guilford, 7-0, in game one of the teams’ ODAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field. The Generals earned the sweep with a 9-1 victory over the Quakers in game two.

Dean (7-2) recorded his third shutout and sixth complete game of the season after striking out five batters and giving up just five hits during his seven innings on the mound.

With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, senior catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadd’s Ford, Pa./Unionville) and junior designated hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) connected on back-to-back singles to spark a home team rally. Freshman right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) capitalized by sending a high fly ball over the left field wall to give W&L a 3-0 lead. The Generals added a run in both the second and third innings, and scored two more in the fourth inning to finish the scoring.

Mulhern, Bausch and Garland all connected on two hits for the game, with Garland driving in a game-high three runs and Bausch adding two RBI.

Freshman right hander Oliver Beale (Woodford, Va./Fredericksburg Christian) dropped to 3-5 on the season after giving up 10 hits and seven runs in three innings of work.

In game two, the Quakers (17-18, 5-11) struck first as sophomore first baseman Rob Bittner (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) singled and drove in senior center fielder A.J. McCauley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum).

Washington and Lee (16-10, 10-5) responded in the bottom of the second frame with its biggest offensive inning of the day, exploding for six runs on five hits. The Generals added two more runs in the fourth inning and a final run in the seventh inning.

Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) recorded the complete-game victory and improved to 6-1 on the season after striking out eight batters and holding the Quakers to just four hits through nine innings of work.

Mulhern led the Generals from the plate, connecting on his fifth and sixth home runs to tie the school record for home runs in a game for the third time in his career. He finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal), sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and junior left fielder Chris Chaplin (Midlothian, Va./James River) each had two hits on the day.

Junior right hander Dave Shaffer (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) suffered the loss, falling to 5-6 on the season after giving up five hits and six runs in two innings on the mound.

The Generals return to action on Sunday when they host West Virginia Tech for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.

W&L BASEBALL COMEBACK AGAINST BRIDGEWATER FALLS SHORT, 7-6

LEXINGTON, Va. - Bridgewater senior first baseman J.R. Estes (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) connected on a grand-slam home run in the top of the fourth inning as the Eagles downed Washington and Lee, 7-6, in ODAC baseball action on Friday evening at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

Trailing 7-1 after the fourth inning, the Generals (14-10, 8-5) scored two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and two more in the eight, but came up short as Eagles’ reliever, freshman Ricky Read (Goode, Va./Brookeville), escaped the eighth inning and retired the side in the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

The Eagles (19-14, 10-4) entered the fourth inning tied with the Generals (14-10, 8-5), 1-1, but thanks to an RBI single and Estes’ home run, Bridgewater stretched its lead to 6-1 before the inning was over. The Eagles’ final run of the game came in the fifth inning when sophomore catcher Bryan Saunders (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) took advantage of a W&L passed ball and scored from third base.

Senior right hander Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Alleghney) suffered his fourth loss of the season (2-4) after giving up 11 hits and two walks with four strikeouts through eight innings of work. Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal), senior designated hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) and sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) all connected on two hits. Gosselink also led the Generals with a home run and three RBI.

Freshman right hander Chance Dobbs (Alleghany, Va./Alleghany) earned the victory (2-0) after holding the Generals to three runs and nine hits in 5.1 innings on the mound. Read, sophomore center fielder Greg Thomas (Monroe, Va./Amherst) and senior outfielder Kyle Walling (Waynesboro, Va./Wilson Memorial) each went 2-for-5 on the day.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Guilford for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.

W&L BASEBALL DROPS A PAIR AT LYNCHBURG

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Washington and Lee stranded 18 runners on base as Lynchburg swept the Generals, 6-3 and 9-6, in an ODAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

In game one the Hornets broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to score all the runs they would need on the game. Washington and Lee scored its third and final run in the top of the sixth inning as freshman right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) led off the inning with a solo homerun to left field, but the Generals could get no closer.

Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) fell to 6-2 on the year with his second loss of the season after giving up 10 hits with six earned runs and three walks through six innings of work. Lynchburg junior right hander Matt Gouker (7-0) earned the complete-game victory after striking out six and holding W&L to nine hits and just one earned run.

In game two the Hornets (24-6, 11-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings and extended their lead to 8-2 by the end of the sixth frame. The Generals (14-9, 8-4) answered with three runs in the top of the seventh inning for their most prolific canto of the day, but couldn’t get any closer as both teams added a run in the eighth inning.

Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) was saddled with his first loss of the season (5-1) after giving up eight hits, eight earned runs and six walks through six innings on the mound. Lynchburg senior right hander Jay Moore (8-2) notched the win after giving up 12 hits and five runs through 6.1 innings of work.

Senior short stop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) and sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) both went 5-for-7 with one RBI to lead W&L from the plate in the doubleheader.

Senior second baseman Anthony Palmisano went 6-for-8 on the day with five RBI to lead Lynchburg on the day, while sophomore center fielder Steven Scott connected on 4-of-6 with four RBI.

The Generals return to action on Monday when they host Bridgewater for a 1:00 p.m. game.

W&L BASEBALL SPLITS AT VIRGINIA WESLEYAN

NORFOLK, Va. - Freshman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) went 5-for-8 with a pair of doubles and seven RBI as the Generals split a double-header with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Marlins took game one with a 9-5 decision, while W&L rallied for an 8-6 win in game two.

In game two, senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) recorded the win for the Generals (14-7, 8-2) after giving up 14 hits in 7.2 innings of work with four strikeouts and four walks. Senior Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) recorded his first save of the season after holding Virginia Wesleyan to just two hits in 1.1 innings in relief.

Edwards went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI to lead the Generals, while Mulhern, junior Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) and sophomore Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) all recorded a pair of hits in the victory.

In game one, senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) suffered his first loss of the season (6-1) after giving up seven hits and eight runs in three innings of work.

Edwards went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while six other Generals recorded solo hits.

The Generals return to action Tuesday when they host Bridgewater for a 3:00 p.m. game.

W&L BASEBALL FALLS TO BRIDGEWATER, 8-4

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Washington and Lee suffered its first ODAC loss of the season as the Generals fell to Bridgewater, 8-4, in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon.

After watching W&L (13-6, 7-1) take an early lead with two runs in the first inning, the Eagles (11-11, 3-2) exploded for two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, and three runs in the six to take a commanding 7-2 advantage.

Freshman Justin Folks (1-1) earned the victory after holding W&L to just two runs and nine hits through five innings on the mound.

Mulhern recorded five strikeouts for the Generals, but suffered the loss (1-1) after giving up nine hits and six runs through 5.2 innings of work.

DEAN SETS ODAC RECORD FOR CAREER WINS AS W&L BASEBALL SWEEPS EMU

LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) set the Old Dominion Athletic Conference record for wins in a career as the Generals swept Eastern Mennonite, 4-0 and 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

In the opening game, Dean upped his record to 6-0 on the season, giving up six hits with four strikeouts for his fourth complete game and second shutout of the year. The decision marks his 26th career win (26-5), giving him the most wins ever by an ODAC pitcher.

Washington and Lee held a narrow 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, but scored two more before the inning was over and added another run in the sixth frame for its second shutout of the spring. Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) led W&L with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with an RBI and one run scored, while senior left fielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Junior right hander Kevin Forry (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) suffered the loss for the Royals after giving up nine hits in six innings of work.

In game two the Generals (13-5, 7-0) again held a narrow 1-0 lead, before freshman right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with his second home run of the season and sparked a four-run rally for W&L.

Kagey (4-0) held the Royals (9-12, 2-2) to just three hits while fanning six and recording his first shutout and first complete game of the year.

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah freshman right hander Keith Fritz allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings of work as the Hornets defeated Washington and Lee, 7-2, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon.

Shenandoah (11-10) scored one run in each of the first three innings, one run in the fifth and three in the eighth to pick up its third straight victory.

The Generals (11-5) dented the scoreboard in the sixth inning as senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) led off the frame with a single to center, sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) then connected on a double to left field that advanced Allain to third base and senior right fielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) brought both runners home with a single to right field.

With the Generals (11-4, 5-0) trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) led off the frame with a single to left field. Mulhern made the most of the situation and drove his fourth home run of the season over the centerfield wall to give W&L a 3-1 lead. Before the inning was over, the Generals took control of the game as sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) brought home the eventual go-ahead run with a two-out solo homerun to center.

W&L added a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings and the Yellow Jackets scored their lone run in the fifth.

In game two Kagey allowed six hits and no runs, while striking out six through eight innings of work. LEXINGTON, Va. - Sophomore left hander Austin Devnew (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) held Washington and Lee to just two hits and no runs in eight innings of work as Piedmont downed the Generals, 10-3, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

After two scoreless innings, the Lions (6-7) scored two runs in both the third and fourth frames, four runs in the fifth frame and one run in both the sixth and ninth frames.

W&L (8-4) couldn’t alter the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth inning when junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) managed a two-out single to centerfield off of Piedmont junior right hander Jeff McCleskey (Canton, Ga./Milton). Junior Chris Chaplin (Midlothian, Va./James River) then reached first of an error by the Lions’ shortstop Chris Russell (Stathem, Ga./Winder-Barrow) before sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) brought everyone home with his first career home-run.

LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior lefty Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) threw a complete game and allowed just five hits to become Washington and Lee’s all-time win leader as the Generals swept a doubleheader from Emory & Henry, 7-0 and 16-3, in ODAC baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

Dean walked off the mound after game one with his 24th career win after striking out six with just one walk to surpass Bob Weston (1996-1999) for most wins by a General.

The Generals scored runs in five of their six at bats, outhitting the Wasps, 13-5, and recording their first shutout since W&L blanked Lynchburg (8-0) on Apr. 13, 2003.

Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) led five Generals with multiple hits, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore centerfielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison), freshman rightfielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) and sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each connected on a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, W&L (8-3, 2-0) erupted for 21 hits, as senior righty Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) held Emory & Henry (0-8, 0-2) to three hits and no runs through seven innings of work. Kagey recorded 11 strikeouts with just three walks on the day.

Bausch continued his hot streak in the second game, connecting in 4-for-4 with three doubles, a home run and three RBI, while Garland went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. LEXINGTON, Va. - The 23rd-ranked Mary Washington baseball team connected on 14 hits and senior righty Brendan Orsinger (Vienna, Va./James Madison) recorded three strikeouts with two hits for the save, as the Eagles held off Washington and Lee, 7-5, on Friday afternoon at Cap’n Dick Smith Field.

Senior lefty Stefan Shoen (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East) threw a no-hitter through four innings, and gave up six hits with seven strikeouts through 6.2 innings of work for the victory.

Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, the Generals (6-3) found new life as senior short stop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) connected on a single. Sophomore centerfielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) continued the rally with a double to left field to move the tying run to second, but the comeback fell short as junior Tim Stoner (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) ran down a long shot to right field by second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) for the third out of the inning.

In the final frame Orsinger recorded a strikeout and forced a pop-up for two outs before junior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) reached first on an error. Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, W&L (4-2) pushed its lead to 6-1 as Mulhern cleared the bases with a double to left.

The Generals scored three more runs in the fifth to push their lead to 9-1, before the Knights (2-4) notched a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.

W&L finished the afternoon’s scoring as sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) connected on a two-out triple to right center and Mulhern drove him in with a single to right field.

In the opener, senior left hander Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) tossed a complete-game six-hitter to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Generals erupted for five runs in the fourth inning as junior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) knocked in two runs with a two-out double to left field. In game two, W&L (3-2) trailed 7-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but mounted a valient comeback, cutting the score to 7-6 entering the final inning. Mulhern led off the sixth with his second home run of the season and junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) then doubled to left field. Freshman right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) brought Bausch home with a single to right field and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster). Sophomore Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) then capped the scoring with a pinch-hit solo home run to left field, his third round-tripper of the season.

The rally fell short in the bottom of the seventh as Villa Julie (1-1) junior right hander Justin McKeever sent the Generals down in order for the complete-game victory.

No W&L player recorded more than one hit in the contest. Freshman left hander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) was saddled with his first loss of the season after allowing four earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Seven Washington and Lee pitchers held 12th-ranked Emory University to just four hits over 15 innings of work, but fell to the Eagles, 4-3, in extra innings.

The Generals (1-1) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning as freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) singled home senior first baseman Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) with one out.

The two teams would play the next four innings scoreless, before the Generals struck for another run in the 14th inning. Freshman second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored on a single by sophomore centerfielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison). The Eagles (2-0) would strike back with one run in the bottom of the frame to force a 15th-inning.

W&L again took the lead in the 15th frame as sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led off the inning with a double. Freshman Raymond Sweeney (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) came into pinch run for McConnell and later scored on a wild pitch. However, the Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom half, one on a wild pitch and the game-winner on a error by senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston).

Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) started the game and pitched seven innings of one-hit ball before giving way to Mulhern, who tossed three innings of one-hit ball. ATLANTA, Ga. -- Sophomore second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and senior pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) allowed two runs in seven innings of work as the Washington and Lee baseball team won its season-opener, 9-2, over Oglethorpe on Tuesday.

Oglethorpe (0-4) was first to find the scoreboard with both its runs coming in the first frame, but the Stormy Petrels wouldn’t cross home plate again. The Generals (1-0) scored a pair in both the fourth and fifth, one in both the six and the seventh, and three in the ninth.

Junior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) also went 3-for-5 for W&L, while senior outfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and freshman outfielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) both connected on 2-of-5 from the plate. Bullock and Mulhern each hit a double in the game.
