W&L BASEBALL FALLS TO WEST VIRGINIA TECH, 11-9
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior shortstop John Sullivan (Beckley,
W.Va.) went 3-for-6 with a double, two runs, and two RBI to help lead
the West Virginia Tech baseball team to an 11-9 victory over Washington
and Lee on Wednesday afternoon at Capn Dick Smith Field. The Bears led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the second
inning, but the Generals (27-13) took a 3-2 lead on a two-run single
by sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill). West
Virginia Tech responded with two runs in the third inning and then took
a 9-3 lead by plating five runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore designated
hitter Jacob Johnson (Huntington, W.Va.) smacked a two-run homerun in
the frame. W&L slowly chipped away at the six-run deficit with
single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. After the Bears
scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to push their lead back
to four runs at 10-6, the Generals notched three runs in the bottom
of the inning to pull within 10-9. Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell
(Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) connected on a two-run homerun and senior catcher
Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) followed with a solo shot. However,
West Virginia Tech scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning
on an RBI single by senior first baseman Justin Lavender (East Bank,
W.Va.). With one out in the bottom of the ninth, senior left fielder
Warren Hunter (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) walked and junior center fielder
Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was hit by a pitch to put
runners on first and second, but Miller grounded into a double play
to end the game. McConnell finished 4-for-5 with two homeruns and four
RBI, while Miller went 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. Junior shortstop
Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens Episcopal) batted
3-for-5 and scored a run. On the mound, freshman right hander Tim Livingston
(Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) allowed seven runs on 10 hits with
two strikeouts in three innings to take the loss (4-2). For the Bears, Johnson went 2-for-4 with a homerun and
two RBI and senior third baseman John Hanson (Charleston, W.Va.) went
3-for-4 with three runs. Senior right hander Paul Ferrell (Summerville,
S.C.) pitched four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits to pick
up the win, while freshman left hander Kyle McDowell (St. Petersburg,
Fla.) threw a scoreless ninth to earn the save. W&L returns to the field on Saturday, when it hosts
St. Marys (Md.). The game begins at 1:00 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L BASEBALL DEFEATS BLUEFIELD COLLEGE, 9-4 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore right hander Clayton Edwards
(Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) allowed three runs on seven hits and struck
out three in six innings to help the Washington and Lee baseball team
defeat Bluefield College, 9-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Capn Dick
Smith Field. With the win, Edwards improved to 8-4 on the season. The Generals (27-12) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of
the first inning on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Jordan Wesley
(Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds). The Rams (16-26) tied the score
at 1-1 in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman
center fielder Steven Cruey (Richmond, Va.). The game remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the
fourth inning when W&L exploded for four runs. Sophomore second
baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill) and senior designated
hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) each hit two-run singles in
the inning. Bluefield cut the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth inning on
a two-run single by junior catcher Al Phillips (Greenville, S.C.), but
the Generals plated four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning
to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell
(Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) keyed the run by driving in three runs on a bases
loaded double to left center field. Junior center fielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James
Madison) went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs for the Generals. McConnell
finished 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while junior shortstop
Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens Episcopal) batted
1-for-2 and scored three runs. Bluefield was led by senior first baseman Robby Lanham
(Greenville, Tenn.) and freshman left fielder Timmy Brown (Richlands,

junior left hander Steven Baker (Jacksonville, Fla.) gave up five runs
on four hits and walked seven in 3.1 innings to take the loss (0-5).

West Virginia Tech. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L BASEBALL DROPS A PAIR OF GAMES IN ODAC TOURNAMENT SALEM, Va. -- The fifth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball
team dropped pair of games in the ODAC Tournament on Saturday at Salem
Memorial Stadium in Salem, Va. The Generals fell to sixth-seeded Hampden-Sydney,
7-2, before losing to second-seeded Lynchburg, 8-6. In the loss to H-SC, the Generals (26-12) took a 1-0 lead
in the first inning on an RBI double by junior first baseman Taylor
McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and held the one-run lead until the
third inning, when the Tigers (23-13) scored three runs. Freshman catcher
Jason Bour hit an RBI double in the frame. H-SC tacked on one run in the sixth and two more in the
eighth to take a 6-1 advantage. W&L got one run back in the bottom
of the eighth inning on an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter
Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds). The Tigers ended
the scoring with a run in the ninth inning. The Generals were led by sophomore second baseman David

(4-1). For the Tigers, sophomore right fielder John Apperson
batted 4-for-5 with a double and two runs. Bour and junior center fielder
Chris Padgett each went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore right hander
Larry Greene gave up two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in
a complete game victory (6-2). In the loss to Lynchburg, the Generals again took a 1-0
lead in the first inning on an RBI single by McConnell. The Hornets
(27-14) tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning and then senior third
baseman Sean Ransons two-run single sparked a five run third inning,
which gave Lynchburg a 6-1 lead. The Generals trailed 8-1 heading into the bottom of the
fifth inning, but plated two runs in the frame on a two-run double by
McConnell to make it 8-3. The score remained 8-3 until the bottom of
the ninth inning when W&L made a late charge. The Generals scored
three runs on an RBI single by senior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean)
and a two-run double by Wesley, but the comeback fell short when Lynchburg
senior right hander Eric Fitzsimmons struck out the final two W&L
batters. McConnell finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and three
RBI, while Miller went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Senior right
hander Brian Higgins (Centerville, Mass./Milton Academy) allowed seven
runs on eight hits and struck out three in four innings to take the
loss (3-2). For the Hornets, Ranson batted 3-for-5 with a run and
three RBI, while senior first baseman Lucas Jones went 3-for-5 with
two runs. Junior right hander John Hines gave up three runs on eight
hits and struck out nine in seven innings to pick up the win (2-1).
Fitzsimmons allowed one hit with two strikeouts in one inning of work
to earn the save. W&L returns to the field on Tuesday, when it hosts
Bluefield College at 3:00 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L BASEBALL DEFEATS VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, 9-8, IN ODAC TOURNAMENT SALEM, Va. -- Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal,
N.Y./Vestal) went 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI to propel
fifth-seeded Washington and Lee to a 9-8 win over fourth-seeded Virginia
Wesleyan in game 6 of the ODAC Baseball Tournament on Friday evening
at Salem Memorial Stadium in Salem, Va. McConnell now has 57 hits on
the season, which is a new W&L single-season record. The Generals (26-10) scored three runs in the sixth inning
on a two-run double by McConnell and an RBI single by senior catcher
Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean). The Marlins (20-17) scored a run in
the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 6-6, but W&L scored
three more runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead. McConnell
had his second two-run double of the game in the inning. Virginia Wesleyan plated two runs in the bottom of the
eighth inning to make it a 9-8 game with one of the runs coming on an
RBI single by freshman Mike Dertouzos. In the bottom of the ninth inning,
W&L freshman right hander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa
Monica) struck out the first two Marlin batters, but then gave up a
double to freshman Aswin Dhramapitaksook. However, Livingston induced
freshman David Wicker into a ground out to second base to end the game. Bausch finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while
sophomore designated hitter Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J.
Reynolds) batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Livingston allowed
two runs, both unearned, on three hits and struck out five over the
final 3.1 innings to pick up the win (4-1). Sophomore left hander Johnson
Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) started for the Generals and gave up
six runs, five earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
For the Marlins, senior Brandon Hill batted 3-for-5 with
two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore left hander David Imperato pitched
the first 5.2 innings for Virginia Wesleyan and gave up six runs on
10 hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Junior right hander Zach
Baker allowed two unearned runs in one inning of work to take the loss
(0-6). W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it plays
sixth-seeded Hampden-Sydney at 11:00 am. -- GENERALS -- W&L BASEBALL EDGES LYNCHBURG, 12-10, IN ODAC TOURNAMENT SALEM, Va. -- The fifth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball
team took an 11-2 lead after six innings and held on for a 12-10 win
over second-seeded Lynchburg in the first round of the ODAC Tournament
at Salem Memorial Stadium in Salem, Va. The Generals (25-10) held a 5-1 lead after five innings
and exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth to take an 11-1 advantage.
Senior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) smacked
a two-run double in the frame. The Hornets got one run back in the bottom
of the inning to make it an 11-2 game. After the top of the seventh inning, a heavy rain ensued
and there was about a 30 minute rain delay. Once the teams returned
to the field, the Hornets (24-14) began to chip away at W&Ls
nine-run lead. Lynchburg plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning on a homerun by senior first baseman Lucas Jones to make the
score 11-4, but the Generals scored its 12th run in the eighth inning
when senior left field Warren Hunter (Richmond,Va./Collegiate) scored
on a wild pitch. The Hornets then scored five runs in the bottom of the
eighth inning to pull within 12-9. Senior shortstop Sean Abell hit a
two-run homerun and senior third baseman Sean Ranson drove in two runs
on a double. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Lynchburg scored another
run and had runners on first and second, but Jones flied out to Hunter

went a combined 7-for-7 with a double, a home run and four runs to help
lead Guilford to a double header sweep of Washington and Lee in ODAC
baseball action on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. The Quakers
won the first game, 3-1 and took the second game, 16-4. In game one, Guilford (23-13, 12-6) broke open a scoreless
game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single
by junior right fielder Jeff Arzonico and a sacrifice fly by junior
catcher Andrew Lerner. The Quakers tacked on their third run in the
fifth inning on a solo home run by Parent. The Generals (24-10, 10-8)
scored their only run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder
Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) in the seventh
inning. W&L was led by junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin,
Texas/St. Stephens Episcopal), who batted 4-for-4 with a run scored.

in three innings to suffer the loss (4-3). Parent went 5-for-5 with a double, RBI and three runs,
while junior first baseman Rob Bittner batted 4-for-5 with a run and
three RBI. Sophomore right hander Dave Whigham surrendered four runs,
two earned, on five hits and struck out seven in five innings to pick
up the win (6-2). W&L returns to the field on Thursday in the opening

(Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) went 4-for-5 with three doubles
and three RBI to help lead Washington and Lee to a 9-5 victory over
Roanoke in ODAC baseball action on Friday afternoon in Salem, Va. The game was scoreless heading into the fourth inning,
but the Generals (24-8, 10-6) exploded for four runs in the inning.

and an RBI. He now has 17 doubles on the season, which is a new single-season

a 6-2 game with six runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to
a 12-2 victory at Dickinson College on Monday afternoon. The Generals (23-8) took a 6-0 lead in the top of the
fifth inning with three runs, including a two-run homerun by sophomore
right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights).
The Red Devils (6-12-1) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom
of the fifth, but W&L would score six runs with two outs in the
sixth inning to put the game away. Sophomore designated hitter Clayton
Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) laced a two-run single, while senior

the bases loaded with one out, but were unable to score the tying run. The game was scoreless heading into the sixth inning,
but the Eagles (12-11-1, 5-3) struck for two runs in the top of the
sixth on RBI doubles by senior second baseman Tracy Wagner (Verona,
Va./Fort Defiance) and Showalter. W&L tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the

Hill) led off the inning with a single and was driven home on a double

split a double header with ODAC-rival Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday
afternoon at Capn Dick Smith Field. The Generals won the first
game, 3-2, but dropped the nightcap 5-3. In game one, the Marlins (11-11, 5-3) took a 2-0 lead
in the first inning on RBI singles by senior shortstop Brandon Hill
(Norfolk, Va./Granby) and senior right fielder Colin Roberson (Virginia
Beach, Va./First Colonial). The Generals (22-5, 9-3) scored all of their runs in

Va./Collegiate) hit a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning
to drive home junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal)
to lift the Washington and Lee baseball team past Southern Virginia,
5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Capn Dick Smith Field. Southern Virginia senior catcher Nate Sharp (Smithfield,
Utah/Skyview) hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the
Knights (1-4) a 2-0 lead. SVU would add another run in the third and
one more in the seventh to take a 4-0 advantage. The Generals (6-2) plated two runs in the bottom of the
seventh to cut the deficit to 4-2 and tied the game at 4-4 when junior
center fielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) smacked a
two-run single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, McConnell started the inning with
a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then with one out,
SVU freshman pitcher Jordan Brame (Richland, Wash./Hanford) intentionally
walked the next two Generals to load the bases. Hunter then hit Brames
first pitch right up the middle to send home McConnell with the game-winning
run. At the plate, W&L was led by Mackenzie, who went
3-for-4 with three RBI and scored a run. McConnell batted 2-for-3 with
a run, while sophomore right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington
Heights) went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Freshman righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St.
Xavier) allowed no runs in the final two innings to pick up the win

team used a three-run fifth inning to defeat Eastern University, 5-2,
in the final day of the Hampden-Sydney Baseball Tournament. The Generals (5-2) trailed 1-0 until knotting the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Senior outfielder Chris Chaplin (Midlothian, Va./James River) then sparked the fifth inning rally with a two-run single to give W&L a 4-2 lead. After plating another run in the sixth inning, senior
right-hander Brian Higgins (Centerville, Mass./Milton Academy) saved
the game by pitching a scoreless 1 1/3 innings to close out the contest. Freshman right-hander Paul Cobuzzi (Westfield, N.J./Newark
Academy) earned his first career win after pitching one inning of relief
for sophomore lefty starter Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb).
Brownlow hurled four innings of four-hit ball. At the plate, the Generals were led by sophomore second
baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), who went 3-for-3. Junior

team won two games on the opening day of the Hampden-Sydney Tournament.
The Generals routed Lincoln University, 21-0, and defeated Waynesburg
College, 7-4. In the win over Lincoln, sophomore pitcher Clayton Edwards
(Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) threw a perfect game and struck out 11 in
six innings to pick up his first win of the season (1-1). He struck
out the side twice in the game. The Generals (4-2) led just 2-0 after three innings, but
exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning and added six more in the
fifth inning. In the fourth inning, W&L sent 19 batters to the plate
and pounded out 10 hits, including four doubles. In the inning, junior
centerfielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) went 2-for-2
with a double, knocked in four runs, and scored twice. Senior third
baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) also went 2-for-2 with
two runs and an RBI. Mackenzie finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and
four RBI. Sophmore rightfielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington
Heights) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and four RBI. Sophomore
lefthander Joshua Williams took the loss for the Lions. In the victory over Waynesburg, W&L led 2-0 after
three innings and scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take
a 5-0 lead. Junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens
Episcopal) hit a two-run double in the inning. The Yellow Jackets responded with four runs in the bottom
of the inning to cut the Generals lead to 5-4. W&L scored
two runs in the sixth inning to close out the scoring. Gosselink batted 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a run
and stole two bases. Senior designated hitter Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean)
went 3-for-3 at the plate. Freshman pitcher Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa

at 12:00 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT MARYVILLE MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team
split a doubleheader with Maryville College on Thursday afternoon in
Maryville, Tenn. The Generals took the opener, 4-2, but dropped the
second game, 5-1. In game one, the Generals (2-2) took a 2-0 lead into the
bottom of the seventh inning, but the Scots (2-2) rallied to score two
runs in the inning to send the game into extra innings. With one out in the eighth inning, senior leftfielder

allowed two runs and struck out four over 6.2 innings in his first collegiate
start. Senior righthander Brian Higgins (Centerville, Mass./Milton Academy)
pitched 2/3 of an inning to pick up the win (1-0). Miller went 2-for-4
with a double and three RBI. Ringley (0-1) gave up two runs and three hits in an inning
to take the loss. Lambert went 2-for-4 and scored a run. In game two, Maryville jumped out to a 5-0 lead after
four innings en route to the 5-1 victory. The Scots scored two runs in the second, one in the third,
and two in the fourth. The Generals scored their only run in the eighth
inning, when sophomore third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster)
singled home junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal).

Atlanta, Ga. Langleys two-run single in the second inning gave
the Eagles (1-0) a 3-0 lead. Emory followed with a run in the fifth,
two more in the sixth, and one more in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead. The Generals (1-1) were held in check throughout the
game until the top of the eighth inning when they scored all three of

opened up the 2005 season with a 7-2 victory over Piedmont College on
Monday afternoon in Demorest, Ga. The Lions (2-3) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first
