W&L FIELD HOCKEY FALLS, 2-0, TO LYNCHBURG IN ODAC SEMIS

The Generals finished their season with a 10-9 overall record

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team fell, 2-0, to top-seeded Lynchburg in the semifinal round of the ODAC Tournament on Friday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.

Lynchburg (17-2), which held an 18-1 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in penalty corners, was led by Dawn McGaha who tallied a goal and an assist. With 26:30 remaining in the second half, the Hornets broke the 0-0 deadlock when Anna Moore found McGaha, who beat W&L freshman goaltender Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) for the game's first score.

McGaha fed Kyla Hoffman with 8:22 left to play for the game's second goal, providing the final 2-0 margin.

Splitting the time in goal, freshmen Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Gelinas combined to turn back nine of the 11 shots they faced.

Joanne Yednock recorded the shutout for LC, which will advance to tomorrow's ODAC Championship to face the winner of the Eastern Mennonite/Roanoke match at 2:00 pm.

With the loss, the Generals wrap up their second season of full varsity play with a 10-9 record overall, 6-3 in ODAC, improving upon last season's inaugural 3-10 overall mark, 2-7 in ODAC.

W&L FIELD HOCKEY WINS FIRST-EVER ODAC MATCH, 1-0, OVER VA. WESLEYAN

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The fourth-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team earned its first-ever ODAC Tournament victory as it defeated fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0, on Saturday evening at the W&L Turf Field.

W&L (10-8), which outshot the Marlins 15-2 and held a 7-0 edge in penalty corners, scored the game's lone goal when junior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) controlled a loose ball and fed it to freshman forward Elisabeth Putney (Richmond, Va./Episcopal), whose shot found the back of the cage with 11:08 remaining in the second half.

W&L freshmen goaltenders Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each played 35 minutes making one save in the shutout.

Sophomore Margie Baker (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) turned back nine shots in the Marlins' (7-9) goal.

The Generals will return to action on Friday as they play in the ODAC Semifinals at top-seed Lynchburg for an 11:30 am match.

W&L FIELD HOCKEY DROPS 3-2 DECISION TO CATHOLIC

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Catholic University overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit for a 3-2 win over Washington and Lee in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (9-8) assumed their 2-0 lead as sophomore defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) scored on a penalty shot with 28:17 remaining in the opening period. Sophomore forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) then scored off an assist from freshman defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) with 4:34 left in the half.

The Cardinals (6-9) began their comeback with 30:57 remaining as freshman forward Christy Engstrom (Pheonixville, Pa./Spring-Ford) found the cage with a penalty shot. Sophomore forward Rebecca Clark (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keogh) then scored goals at the 24:19 and 15:24 marks for the 3-2 win. Freshman midfielder Jamie Punyko (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) assisted on Clark's first goal.

Freshmen goalkeepers Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in goal for the Generals. Gelinas made eight saves and Harrison stopped two shots.

Senior Katie Iannacone (Havertown, Pa./Villa Maria) logged all 70 minutes in goal for the Cardinals, making 10 saves.

The loss ended Washington and Lee's regular season. The Generals will resume action in the ODAC Tournament on Sat., Nov. 2, as they host Virginia Wesleyan at a time yet to be determined.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team won its fourth-straight match with a 3-1 defeat of St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (9-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) with 23:40 left on the clock. W&L then took a 2-0 lead into halftime when freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored off assists from Murphy and junior sweeper Maitena Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) with 9:00 remaining in the first half.

St. Mary's (4-9) cut the lead in half by scoring its sole goal less than four minutes into the second half when junior midfielder Kate Story's (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) shot found the back of the W&L cage.

Moure provided the final 3-1 margin when she scored off a pass from Murphy on a short corner after time had expired.

In the W&L goal, freshmen goaltenders Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each played 35 minutes, combining to make five saves. Sophomore Whitney Fahrman (Easton, Md./Easton) and freshman Megan Lehr (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) split the time in the Seahawks' cage, turning back seven shots.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Jane Beall (Midlothian, Va./James River) scored with 8:47 remaining in overtime to lift the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Randolph-Macon on Thursday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.

The Yellow Jackets (6-8, 2-6 ODAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 10:21 to play in the first half when Cory Wood scored off a pass from Lyndsay Edginton.

W&L (8-7, 6-3 ODAC) rebounded to tie the score at 1-1 with 23:23 remaining in the second half when sophomore defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) scored on a penalty stroke. Neither team was able to put the ball in the cage for the remainder of regulation, setting the stage for Beall's overtime game-winner.

Freshmen goaltenders Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each saw time in the Generals' cage, combining to make five saves. Samantha Molden turned back seven shots in the Randolph-Macon goal.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Five different players scored goals as Washington and Lee defeated Rhodes College, 5-0, in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (7-7) opened the scoring at the 27:40 mark of the first period as sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va/St. Catherines) scored an unassisted tally. Junior sweeper Maitena Moure (Mar Del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) also scored an unassisted goal at the 15:17 mark to give W&L a 2-0 halftime lead.

Freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), sophomore defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) and junior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) all scored goals in the second half to provide the final margin. Rathbone's goal occurred on a penalty stroke. The Generals (6-7, 5-3) opened up a 2-0 halftime advantage behind goals from freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and junior sweeper Maitena Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity).

W&L continued to apply pressure offensively in the second half by scoring four more times. Goals were tallied by sophomore forward Ali Santoro (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville), sophomore defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest), Northen and freshman midfielder Jane Beall (Midlothian, Va./James River).

For the evening, W&L held advantages in shots and penalty corners of 27-2 and 9-1.

The Eagles (8-4) assumed a 1-0 lead with 21:06 left in the first period as sophomore midfielder Marie Lobaugh (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) scored off an assist by sophomore midfielder Billie Rickenbaugh (McAlisterville, Pa./East Juniata). The lead grew to 2-0 with 17:58 remaining in the half as freshman midfielder Marcie White (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored off another assist from Rickenbaugh.

The Generals (5-7) cut the lead to 2-1 with 30:53 remaining in the game as freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored off a penalty corner. W&L FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS RANDOLPH-MACON WOMAN'S, 4-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) scored two goals to help lift Washington and Lee to a 4-1 win over Randolph-Macon Woman's College in ODAC field hockey action on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.

Brown opened the scoring with 4:00 remaining in the first half as she scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines). Freshman midfielder Jane Beall (Midlothian, Va./James River) scored unassisted just 54 seconds later to give the Generals (5-6, 4-3) a 2-0 halftime advantage.

W&L added a couple of insurance goals in the second stanza with the first coming off a penalty corner. Junior sweeper Maitena Moure (Mar Del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) and Murphy both assisted on the goal which was scored by freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) with 26:48 remaining. Brown added the other second half goal off an assist from sophomore forward Ali Santoro (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville).

Randolph-Macon Woman's College (6-7, 1-6) got on the board with an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Eden Fenigsohn (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) at the 14:07 mark of the second half.

Junior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 7:05 mark of the first half.

Sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) stretched the lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal with 30:23 remaining in the second half and sophomore forward Grace Barlow (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) added an insurance goal with 4:38 remaining off an assist from freshman midfielder Lindsay Pace (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) for the final margin.

The Generals (3-6, 2-3) opened the scoring with 32:12 remaining in the first half when sophomore forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) scored an unassisted goal to stake W&L to a 1-0 lead. The Marlins (3-5, 3-2) bounced back almost immediately when freshman forward Cara Byrd's (Suffolk, Va./Jamestown) shot found the back of the Generals' cage with 31:20 remaining in the first half, knotting the contest at 1-1.

W&L took over in the second half scoring three unanswered goals. Sandwiched between Taffe's two goals was a score by junior forward Jessica Lake (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill), who made a long run through the Marlins' defense before cranking a shot into their cage.

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team dropped its match with ODAC-rival Eastern Mennonite, 3-0, Friday evening at Harrisonburg, Va.

Eastern Mennonite's (5-2, 3-1 ODAC) Kristin Moyer staked the Royals to a 1-0 advantage when she scored the first of her two goals with 23:13 to play in the first half off a feed from Jessica Stouff. In the second half, she beat W&L freshman goalie Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) for her second goal of the evening, making the score 2-0.

The Royals' Jonalyn Denlinger added a late goal with 5:32 left in the second half to provide the final margin of 3-0.

For the evening, EMU held a 21-4 advantage in shots over W&L (2-6, 1-3 ODAC).

Harrison made 10 saves in the Generals' net. EMU's Emily Chamelin played all 70 minutes in the Royals' goal, recording one save for the shutout.

The Generals next take the field on Sunday when they host Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:00 pm match.

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke's Kelly Lyons scored with 4:57 left in the first overtime to lift the Maroons to victory over visiting Washington and Lee, 2-1, in field hockey action Wednesday evening in Salem, Va.

W&L (2-5, 1-2 ODAC) sophomore forward Grace Barlow (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) opened the scoring when her shot found the back of the cage with 23:54 remaining in the first half.

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team fell to Lynchburg College, 2-0, in an ODAC match at Lynchburg on Saturday.

Lynchburg (7-0, 4-0 ODAC) opened the scoring at 12:37 of the first half when Meredith Zukas' unassisted goal found the back of the cage. In the second half, the Hornets doubled their lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Sara Ensley.

For the afternoon, the Hornets outshot the Generals, 17-6, while also taking 12 penalty corners to the Generals' four.

W&L (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) freshmen netminder Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate Boys School) played all 70 minutes between the pipes, making nine saves.

In the Lynchburg cage, Joanne Yednock stopped five shots.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team peppered Hollins University with 73 shots on its way to a 16-0 victory on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field. Twelve different Generals scored goals as they earned their first ODAC win of the season.

W&L (2-3, 1-0) sophomore forward Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) led the way with two goals and two assists. Also scoring two goals were sophomore forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), junior forward Jessica Lake (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) and sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines).

Freshman goaltenders Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) combined on the shutout by playing 35 minutes each.

Hollins (0-4, 0-4) goaltender Betsy Coe withstood the Generals' onslaught by stopping 35 of the 51 shots that were on goal.

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team dropped its second game of the day, 3-1, to Denison University at the Salisbury Tournament in Salisbury, Md.

Denison (3-2) scored three first-half goals to open up an insurmountable lead. Jennifer Lacey got the Big Red on the board when she scored with 33:34 remaining in the first.

The Big Red's Kelsey Ill then scored the first of two goals on the day with 29:10 remaining. Ill added another with 12:40 remaining in the half, making the score 3-0.

W&L (1-2) got on the board when freshman midfielder Jane Beall (Midlothian, Va./James River) scored her second goal of the tournament with 8:25 remaining in the match. Sophomore forward Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) registered the assist.

Freshman goalie Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) got the start in the W&L cage, making two saves in 35 minutes of play. Fellow freshman goalie Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate Boys School) played the second half, recording two saves.

Sarah Robator stopped eight shots for the Big Red, who were outshot by W&L, 13-7.

Wesley (2-2) got on the board first when Kim Robostello scored the first of her two goals just 35 seconds into the first half.

W&L, which fell to 1-1 on the season, tied the score with its lone goal when freshman midfielder Jane Beall's (Midlothian, Va./James River) shot found the back of the cage with 19:31 to play in the first half.

Allison Houdek added a goal for the Wolverines with 12:52 left in the first half to make the score 2-1at the break. Robostello provided the final 3-1 margin when she tallied her second goal with 25:32 to play in the second half.

Wesley outshot the Generals 20-10 on the afternoon.

Junior forward Jessica Lake (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) gave the Generals (1-0) a 1-0 advantage at 16:45 by converting a pass from English exchange student Joanna Slack (Coventry, U.K./King Henry VIII School).

Junior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) added an insurance goal at 2:05 of the second half when she found the back of the cage on an unassisted tally.

W&L outshot the Fighting Squirrels, 17-4, for the contest.
