W&L FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO EASTERN MENNONITE, 5-0, IN ODAC SEMIFINALS
NORFOLK, Va. -- The third-seeded Washington and
Lee field hockey team wrapped up the 2003 season on Friday, as the Generals
fell to second-seeded Eastern Mennonite University, 5-0, in the ODAC
tournament semifinals, at Virginia Wesleyan.
The Royals (16-3) took a 2-0 lead into halftime and added a trio of
goals after the break to extend their lead. Senior forward Kristin Moyer
led Eastern Mennonite with a goal and a pair of assists, while sophomore
forward Jonalyn Denlinger led Eastern Mennonite with two goals.
Sophomore Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas
(Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) split time in the Generals (10-9) goal.
Harrison made 10 saves while Gelinas made one save.
Freshman Emily Chamelin played all 70:00 minutes for the Royals, making
three saves.
The Generals finished the season with a 10-9 overall record and a 6-3
mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville,
Va./Albemarle) scored two goals to lead the third-seeded Washington
and Lee field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon
in ODAC tournament first-round action on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Jessica Yoke (Newport News, Va./Menchville) put the
Yellow Jackets (7-10) up 1-0 when she scored off an assist by sophomore
midfielder Erin DiDomenico (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) at 11:30 of
the first half.
Taffe evened the score for the Generals (10-8) when she
scored her first goal with 2:11 left in the first half. She then gave
W&L a 2-1 lead with her second goal at 29:43 in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) pushed
the W&L lead to 3-1, notching the eventual game-winner at 25:38.
With 46 second remaining, sophomore midfielder Carrie Peirce (Easton,
Md./Easton) put Randolph-Macon on the board a second time, but the W&L
lead proved too much for the Yellow Jackets' late-game rally.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in the Generals' goal. Harrison
started and made two saves, while Gelinas played in the second half
and made four saves.
Senior goalie Samantha Molden (Easton, Md./Easton) played all 70 minutes
for Randolph-Macon, making 14 saves.
The Generals return to action on Friday when they take on second-seeded

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kristin Moyer (Souderton,
Pa./Christopher Dock) scored two goals as the Eastern Mennonite field
hockey team defeated Washington and Lee, 5-3, in ODAC action on Wednesday
night.
The game was started on Oct. 14, but suspended due to
lightening with 16:30 remaining on the clock and EMU leading 4-1. The
Generals (9-8, 6-3) and Royals (14-3, 8-1) reconvened on Wednesday to
finish the contest.
After play resumed, W&L took steps to even the game
as sophomore defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends School)
scored unassisted at 11:58 to make the score 4-2.
The Royals answered with 3:46 remaining as freshman midfielder
Kristie Souder (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) scored off an assist
from Stephanie Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock).
Senior Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) put
the Generals on the board again at the 1:28 mark with her second goal
of the game, but the effort proved to be the W&L offense's last.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and
Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in the Generals'
goal. Gelinas started and made four saves, while Harrison played in
the second half and made five saves.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee used a pair
of early goals to outpace Randolph-Macon, 2-1, in ODAC field hockey
action on Tuesday evening.
The victory secures the Generals (9-7, 6-3) a home contest in the first
round of the ODAC tournament. They will host a yet to be determined
opponent on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Sophomore midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored an
unassisted goal just 5:51 into the match to give the Generals a 1-0
lead. At 23:22 sophomore defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends
School) sank an unassisted goal of her own to give W&L all they
would need to secure the win.
The Yellow Jackets (7-8, 4-5) made a late-game push as forward Lyndsay
Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Acad.) off an assist from
sophomore midfielder Erin DiDomenico (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River)
with 4:18 left to play. Despite a flurry of shots in the waning minutes,
neither team was able to alter the scoreboard again.

5-4, on Sunday afternoon.
In a game that saw four lead changes, the Generals (8-7) tied the score
as junior defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) scored
off an assist by sophomore defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends
School) at 56:02. At the 66:53 mark, Brown buried the game-winning tally
off an assist by freshman forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby),
giving W&L its second victory of the weekend.

on the day.

The Generals (6-7, 4-2) took a 1-0 lead into the half as senior forward
Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored at 23:53 off an
assist from Northen. Following the break, sophomore midfielder Jane
Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) stretched W&L's lead to 2-0, with
an unassisted goal at 27:22.
The Hornets (7-7, 3-3) retaliated at 15:22 with a goal from sophomore
forward Andrea Fleming (Milford, Del./Milford), but Northen responded
for the Generals and sank what would prove to be the game-winner at

Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (6-6) found the cage first, taking a 1-0 lead off a goal
from senior defender McCauley Williams (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Collegiate)
with 29:58 left in the first half. Senior defender Claire Denny (Virginia
Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) recorded an assist on the goal.
The Generals (5-7) evened the tally when Taffe scored unassisted at
19:54. Her goal sparked a W&L offensive push that produced both
of Lester's goals before the end of the first half and gave the home
team a 3-1 lead going into the break.
In the second half, the Generals got another goal from Taffe, as well

The Generals (4-7) were the first to find the net when junior forward
Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) scored off a pass from sophomore

in the first half.
Catholic (6-6) evened the score as Roselle tallied her first goal with
18:12 left in the game. With the clock winding down, the Cardinals succeeded
in their come-back bid as Roselle sank the game-winning goal with less
than two minutes to play. Sophomore forward Jamie Punyko (Langhorne,
Pa./Neshaminy) and senior defender Sondra Pires (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth)
each recorded an assist.

hockey team dropped its second game in two days as the Generals fell
to Juniata, 2-1, in non-conference action on Saturday evening.
After battling the Eagles (9-5) through two overtime periods,
W&L (4-6) saw the game slip away as Juniata outscored the Generals,
3-1, in penalty strokes.
Senior defender Dana Groff (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) gave the Eagles
a 1-0 lead at 47:50, but that lead was short lived as senior forward
Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) sank a pass from sophomore
midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) at 58:09.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison

The Eagles (5-4, 2-4) took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal
from senior forward Barbara Roebuck (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne)
at 27:41. After the break, sophomore forward Sarah Anne Evans (Spotsylvania,
Va./Spotsylvania) stretched the visitors' lead to 2-0 with a goal at
19:37.
Beall sparked a late-game offensive push for W&L (4-5, 3-2) when
she sank her goal at 9:06 off an assist from junior midfielder Kitt
Murphy (New York, N.Y./St. Catherines). However, the Generals were unable
to score the equalizing goal in the final nine minutes.
Junior forward Carissa VanAlstine (King George, Va./King George) and
sophomore midfielder Jennie Hoffsmith (Palmyra, Pa./Mt. Calvary) both
recorded an assist for Bridgewater.
Splitting time in goal for the Generals were sophomores Courtney Harrison

The Generals (4-4, 3-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to an unassisted
goal by sophomore forward Elisabeth Putney (Richmond, Va./Episcopal)
at 10:24. Following the break, five more W&L players bested the
WildCats' (2-6, 1-5) goalie to ice the Generals' victory.

Splitting time in goal for the Generals were sophomores Courtney Harrison
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin).
Gelinas started the contest, while Harrison took over net-minding duties
in the second half. Neither keeper needed to make a save for W&L.
Freshman goalie Vanessa Sufrin (Bedfordshire, England/Lea Manor) played
all 70 minutes for RMWC, making 17 saves. Freshman defenders Gina Adler
(Richmond, Va./Governor's School) and Stephanie Buttner (Charlottesville,
Va./Western Albemarle) both recorded a defensive save.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Mary Washington's Chrissy Soper
scored a pair of goals in leading the ninth-ranked Eagles to a 4-0 win
over Washington and Lee in field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.
Soper scored the first of three first-half goals for the
Eagles (8-1) and capped the day with the final goal at the 44:48 mark.
Meghan McMahon supplimented Soper's effort with one goal and one assist.
Sophomore Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate)
started in goal for W&L (3-4), allowing three goals and recording
four saves. Sophomore Elise Gelinas (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin) spelled
Harrison in the second half, recording three saves.
Robyn Lankford and Katherine Brown both played in goal
for MWC, posting two saves. For the game, the Eagles held a 12-4 advantage
in shots and a 9-4 edge in penalty corners.
W&L will be in action again on Saturday as it travels
to Randolph-Macon Woman's College for a 1:00 pm contest.

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey
team fell to Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference
(ODAC) action on Sunday afternoon.
Senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored the
Generals (3-3, 2-1) lone goal on a game ending penalty corner.
Splitting the time in goal for W&L was sophomores Courtney Harrison
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin).
Gelinas started the contest and made six saves, while Harrison took
over net-minding duties in the second half with five saves.
Virginia Wesleyan (7-0, 3-0) outshot the Generals 27-5, and held an
11-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Washington and Lee returns to action Wed., Oct. 1 when the Generals
travel to Mary Washington. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville,
Va./Albemarle) scored a pair of goals in the second half to lead the
Washington and Lee field hockey team past Catawba College, 4-1, Friday
evening.
The Generals (3-2) took a 1-0 lead into half-time thanks to a goal from
junior forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), but Taffe's
goals sandwiched around a score from junior midfielder Kitt Murphy (New
York, N.Y./St. Catherines) broke the game wide for the home team.
Freshman defender Rebecca Hatchett (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads
Acad.) and junior defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest)
both recorded an assist in the victory.
The Lady Indians (0-10) prevented the shutout when sophomore defender
Valerie Cullen (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) buried a penalty corner from
senior midfielder Rachel Alosky (Windham, N.H./Salem) with 1:18 left
in the game.
Splitting the time in goal for the Generals, sophomore Courtney Harrison

SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore midfielder
Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored two goals and assisted
on another as the Generals defeated Sweet Briar, 6-1, in ODAC field
hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.
W&L (2-2, 2-0) assumed a 3-0 halftime edge as junior
midfielder Kitt Murphy (New York, N.Y./St. Catherine's), sophomore defender
Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) and junior forward Kristen
Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) all found the cage in the first session.
Brown's goal was assisted by freshman defender Amy Vollkmann (Norfolk,
Va./Granby).
Volkmann then capped the second half scoring by tallying
off a feed from Beall with 1:42 remaining in the game.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in goal, recording one save each.
Sweet Briar (4-3, 1-3) sophomore Jenn Wiley played all

STEVENSON, Md. -- Villa Julie's Dawn McFarland scored on a penalty stroke
with nine seconds remaining to lift the Mustangs to a 3-2 win over Washington
and Lee on Sunday afternoon.
The game-winner capped a run which saw VJC overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit
and was the second goal of the game for McFarland.
W&L opened the scoring with 26:12 remaining in the opening half
as junior link Kitt Murphy (New York, N.Y./St. Catherines) scored unassisted.
The Generals (0-2) then pushed to a 2-0 lead on a penalty stroke goal
by junior defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) with 9:01
remaining before the half.
The Mustangs (2-2) began their comeback with 31:05 remaining as McFarland
found the cage unassisted. Morgan Feehery then scored off an assist from
Danielle Rabuck with 10:16 left to knot the score, setting up McFarland's
game-winner.
Sophomore goalies Elise Gelinas (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney
Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time for the Generals, recording
five saves. Jacqui Healy went the distance in goal for Villa Julie, recording
four saves.
For the game, VJC held a 15-7 edge in shots and 10-7 in corners.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts
Roanoke for a 6:30 pm contest.
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team fell, 3-4
to Johns Hopkins in non-conference action on Saturday
Johns Hopkins (2-2) used a pair of first-half goals to hold off a late
game push by the visiting Generals, getting both scores from sophomore
Meighan Roose. Washington and Lee started its come-back bid early in the
second half as senior Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) buried
a goal unassisted at 31:40.
The Blue Jays responded with a goal by senior Jenny Farrelly at 29:56,
but the Generals kept the home team within striking distance compliments
of a second goal from Taffe at 24:59. Caite Kappel sank the eventual game-winner
for the Blue Jays at 18:53 to put the game out of W&L's reach.
Jane Beall (Midlothian, Va./James River) capped the afternoon's scoring
for the Generals off an assist from Kitt Murphy with 5:40 to play.
Splitting the time in goal, sophomore Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate)
made 10 saves and sophomore Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin)
made five stops.
The Generals return to action tomorrow, September 14 when they travel
