W&L FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO MONTCLAIR STATE, 2-0, IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team saw its school-record 11-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss at Montclair State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Generals' defense kept them in the game throughout as senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) notched seven first-half saves. However, the Red Hawks (17-2) found the cage with just 31 seconds remaining in the first half as Jennifer Tanis scored off an assist from Jen Soss. The score remained 1-0 until MSU's Alexandria Kelly found the cage unassisted at the 55:41 mark of the second half for a 2-0 lead. Senior Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) played the second half in goal for W&L, recording three saves. The Generals' defense helped thwart several other scoring opportunities for the Red Hawks as senior midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), junior defender Rebecca Hatchett (Newport news, Va./Hampton Roads), and freshman defender Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) combined to make six defensive saves. Montclair State held a 19-2 advantage in shots and a 17-2 edge in penalty corners. Robyn Apicelli played all 70 minutes in goal for the Red Hawks, making two saves. The loss ends W&L's season at 15-6 overall. The Generals, in just their sixth season as a varsity program, claimed their first ODAC Championship and first berth to the NCAA Tournament. This is W&L's first ODAC title in program history. The Generals (15-5) controlled the game for most of the first half, but it was the Hornets (15-6) who jumped on the scoreboard first when senior defender Dawn McGaha (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) tallied an unassisted goal at the 20:51 mark. Lynchburg held its 1-0 advantage for the rest of the first half, but W&L tied the game at 1-1 just 4:26 into the second stanza when Beall scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox). Beall then scored the game-winning goal at 58:55. The Hornets had a chance to tie the game late in the contest, but senior forward Andrea Fleming's (Milford, Del./Milford) blast was saved by Generals' senior goalkeeper Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin). The Captains (6-3) tied the game at 1-1 after Traylor scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Kelly Jo Broadhurst at the 24:28 mark. With the score 6-0, junior defender Kim Babbitt (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored her first collegiate goal off assists from freshman forward Michelle Boniface (Darlington, Md./John Carroll) and senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) with just one second left in the first half to give W&L a 7-0 halftime lead. McDaniel (4-1) got on the board just 4:15 into the contest as senior forward Mel Thompson (Magnolia, Del./Caeser Rodney) found the cage off an assist by junior forward Caitlin Potter (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. West). The Green Terror then added to the lead on an unassisted goal by junior defender Colleen Nugent (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) with just eight seconds remaining in the first half. W&L (1-3) outshot McDaniel, 13-11, and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners. Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Lynchburg for a 6:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- GOALS W&L FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS RANDOLPH-MACON, 7-1 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) recorded a school-record seven points on two goals and a school-record tying three assists and senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) tallied a school-record tying three goals to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 7-1 win over ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field. Beall gave the Generals (1-2, 1-0) a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at the 4:32 mark. W&L extended its lead to 2-0 after sophomore forward Maggie Nugent (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) scored the first of her two goals off an assist from Korte. The Generals went into halftime with a 3-0 advantage after Beall scored off a feed from Korte with just four minutes left in the half. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and freshman netminder Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) combined to make two saves for W&L. The Cardinals (3-1) took a 1-0 lead just 2:56 into the game on an unassisted goal by senior forward Christy Engstrom and extended their lead to 2-0 less than five minutes late when Dinsmore scored off a pass from Engstrom. Catholic would tally four more goals to take a 6-0 lead into halftime. Dinsmore ended the scoring with her second goal of the game at the 65:33 mark. Catholic outshot the Generals (0-2), 17-2, and held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners. BALTIMORE, Md. -- Senior midfielder Meighan Roose notched a goal and an assist to help lead the Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The Generals (0-1) were outshot 22-5, while Johns Hopkins had a 16-6 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) made a school-record 16 saves for the Generals, while junior netminder Dayna Eng stopped four shots for the Blue Jays.
