LAST TIME OUT:
The Johns Hopkins defense held Washington and Lee to 164 yards of total offense en route to a 34-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead behind a 28-yard field goal by Matthew Andrade and a 3-yard touchdown run by Adam Cook. The Generals cut into the deficit with 9:40 left in the third quarter as senior Brad Wiginton kicked a 35-yard field goal. However, following a costly W&L turnover, Johns Hopkins extended its lead to 13-3 on a 27-yard field goal by Andrade with 5:49 to play in the third quarter. Johns Hopkins put the game away by scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Peter Dean, who was playing his first game as the Generals' quarterback, completed 14-of-26 passes for 137 yards. He also threw two interceptions. Senior tailback Marc Watson, the reigning ODAC Player of the Year, was held to just 19 yards rushing on 12 carries. Junior running back Chris Sullivan rushed for 22 yards on eight carries and also caught two passes for a team-high 44 yards. Junior safety Davis White led the defense with 10 tackles and an interception, while senior linebacker Jeff Bahl posted 11 stops.

THE LAST MEETING WITH GUILFORD:
(W&L 31, GC 6, September 16, 2000 - Greensboro, N.C.) Washington and Lee held Guilford to 156 yards of total offense, forced four turnovers and moved to 2-0 for the first time since 1973 with a 31-6 rout of Guilford. W&L's defense allowed 79 yards rushing, 77 yards passing and picked off four passes in the victory. The defense also registered eight tackles for a loss. The Generals took a 6-0 lead with 9:43 remaining in the first half on a pair of field goals, 30 and 26 yards respectively, by senior placekicker Andy Vendig. Tailback Marc Watson made it a 14-0 lead after scoring on a one-yard plunge and running in the subsequent two-point conversion with 5:29 remaining. Guilford fought back three minutes later, scoring on a 23-yard touchdown pass from David Hessler to Chuck Irwin making the score 14-6. The extra point was no good. Then, for the second straight week, the Generals put points on the board in the final minutes of the first half. A nine-play, 57-yard drive resulted in a 25-yard field goal by Vendig as time expired giving W&L a 17-6 lead heading to the locker rooms. Watson scored his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter on a two-yard run, giving the Generals a 24-6 lead. Tailback Chris Sullivan finished the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run with 8:11 remaining in the final stanza. Washington and Lee was led by Watson, who rushed for 91 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Bobby Littlehale completed 11-of-22 attempts for 128 yards. Sullivan led all receivers with four catches for 62 yards and also rushed for 38 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, the Generals were led by linebacker Jeff Bahl, who totaled 11 tackles, including three for a loss.

SCOUTING GUILFORD:
Guilford enters its game with W&L sporting a 1-1 overall record after defeating Methodist 28-6 last Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. The Quakers held Methodist to just 13 rushing yards and forced five turnovers, including four interceptions. Junior Brandon Lockhart (116) and sophomore Marcus Ballard (106) each rushed for over 100 yards to lead the Guilford offense which racked up 330 rushing yards, the fourth-highest total in school history. Junior receiver Chris McKinney also had a fine day for the Quakers, catching seven passes for 74 yards and returning a punt 80 yards for a touchdown. Junior defensive back J.J. Edwards led the Guilford defense with two interceptions. On the season, the Quakers' offense has been paced by McKinney, who has caught 11 passes for 134 yards. Brandon Lockhart has led the ground attack with 149 yards on 27 carries, while junior quarterback Oren Robinson has completed 46.9 percent of his passes for 132 yards. Senior linebacker Will Black leads the defense with 15 stops on the season.

WATSON AGAINST GUILFORD:
Senior running back Marc Watson has had a great deal of success in his career against Guilford. Watson has totaled 266 yards and four touchdowns on the ground and seven receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown in three games against the Quakers. Last season, Watson rushed 20 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns against Guilford. In 1999, Watson totaled 114 yards and one touchdown on the ground and three receptions for 24 yards and a touchdown against the Quakers. Watson needs just 572 yards to break the W&L career rushing record.

SIMPLY AMAZING:
Amazing feats are performed on football fields every fall. A feat which never ceases to amaze involve the incredible fumble recovery numbers which have been put up by senior linebacker Jeff Bahl during his first three years. Unbelievably, Bahl time and time again emerges from the turf with the ball following a fumble by the Generals' opponents. Although fumble recovery records have not been kept by the NCAA, Bahl may have set the record for recoveries in a game with four against Sewanee during the 1999 season. All told, Bahl claims 11 fumble recoveries for his career, six of which came last season.

LEFTY QB:
Sophomore Peter Dean enters the 2001 season as the starter at quarterback after switching from the defensive back position he held last season. Dean is the first left-handed quarterback to assume starting duties at W&L in over five decades. Last spring, Dean posted a 6-0 record and 3.10 ERA on the mound for the baseball team.

KEEP AN EYE ON THIS:
Junior running back/wide receiver Chris Sullivan had a fine performance last season at Guilford. Sullivan totaled 176 all-purpose yards and a touchdown in the contest. Sullivan led the team with four receptions for 62 yards and three punt returns for 76 yards (25.3 avg.). Sullivan totaled 98 all-purpose yards in the opener at Johns Hopkins.

HOW ABOUT THE DEFENSE?:
W&L held Guilford to just 156 yards of total offense in last season's meeting. That was the lowest total yards given up by a W&L defensive unit since allowing only 153 yards in a 34-0 win over Catholic on Nov. 13, 1993.
