LAST TIME OUT:
Washington and Lee held Catholic to just 19 yards rushing in defeating the Cardinals, 18-12, on Saturday afternoon. The Generals trailed Catholic 12-7 in the fourth quarter before CUA's Dennis Campbell fumbled a kick return on his own five yard line with 11:35 left to play. W&L senior linebacker Jeff Bahl forced the fumble and his brother, Andrew Bahl recovered the ball. W&L took advantage two plays later as senior running back Marc Watson scored from one yard out. The touchdown was the 29th in Watson’s career, tying the school record for career touchdowns set by Kevin Weaver (1983-86). The Generals attempt at a two-point conversion was good and they led 15-12. W&L upped its lead to 18-12 with 7:08 remaining as senior placekicker Brad Wiginton nailed a 31-yard field goal. The Cardinals failed to convert on a 4th-and-10 play from the W&L 30 yard line with 2:17 remaining in the game. However, CUA got the ball back with 1:30 remaining and drove to the Generals’ 36 yard line before senior quarterback Derek McGee was picked off by W&L sophomore safety Ted Maffitt. Maffitt returned the ball to the Catholic 11 yard line and the Generals ran out the clock for their second ODAC victory of the season. The Generals were led by Watson, who caught 10 passes for 70 yards and rushed seven times for 31 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Chris Sullivan rushed 31 times for 80 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore quarterback Peter Dean completed 19-of-32 attempts for 154 yards. Jeff Bahl led the W&L defense with 10 tackles and two sacks.

THE LAST MEETING WITH HAMPDEN-SYDNEY:
(H-SC 45, W&L 28, October 14, 2000 - Lexington, Va.) Washington and Lee running back Marc Watson set W&L game records for rushing yards (281) and all-purpose yards (382), but the Generals could not overcome key penalties and turnovers as Hampden-Sydney prevailed, 45-28. W&L committed eight penalties for 87 yards and turned the ball over three times which led to two Hampden-Sydney touchdowns. Hampden-Sydney claimed a 7-0 lead on the game's first snap as wide receiver Conrad Singh tossed a 67-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Neal Herndon. Washington and Lee responded with 7:35 remaining in the first quarter as Watson scampered 50 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. The Generals went up 14-7 with 2:52 remaining in the quarter as quarterback Bobby Littlehale called his own number and scored from one-yard out. The Tigers cut the W&L lead to 14-10 on a 30-yard field goal by kicker Doug Van Der Mallie with 9:08 left in the second quarter. The teams would play scoreless for the rest of the half. W&L struck first in the third stanza as Watson reeled off a 23-yard touchdown run with 12:29 remaining to put W&L ahead, 21-17. However, Sydney would answer just 2:16 later as Herndon hauled in his second of three touchdowns on the day, this time a 43-yarder from quarterback Mac Russell. The Generals would again reassume the lead (28-24) with 3:24 remaining in the third as Watson took a Littlehale pass 25 yard for a touchdown, his third score of the day. The Tigers then took the lead for good at 31-28 as Russell found wide-out Jeff Woody on a 16-yard scoring strike. Fullback Kevin Tucker added a three-yard touchdown run with 9:23 remaining and sophomore cornerback Chris Scott sealed the win with a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown with just 2:13 remaining. For the game, Russell completed 15-of-24 attempts for 243 yards and three touchdowns, while Herndon caught seven passes for 156 yards and three scores. Littlehale completed 11-of-18 attempts for 133 yards and one touchdown. Scott led the Hampden-Sydney defense with 12 tackles and two interceptions. Linebacker Matt Stavish paced the Generals with 14 tackles, including three stops for a loss.

SCOUTING HAMPDEN-SYDNEY:
Hampden-Sydney is 2-3 overall, 1-2 in the ODAC following a 34-20 loss at Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers trailed 20-0 early in the second quarter and played catch-up for the remainder of the game. Junior quarterback Mac Russell led the H-SC offense as he completed 12-of-35 attempts for 96 yards and rushed nine times for 69 yards and one touchdown. Freshman running back CW Clemmons carried 11 times for 51 yards and one touchdown and sophomore wide receiver Conrad Singh led the receivers with six catches for 45 yards. Senior linebacker Nate Stasko led the defense with 14 tackles. On the season, Sydney is led by Russell, who has completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 1,035 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he has been picked off 12 times in five games. On the ground, Clemmons has amassed 236 yards and two touchdowns, while Russell has rushed for 130 yards and three scores. Senior Neal Herndon leads the receiving corps with 28 catches for 536 yards and four touchdowns. Singh has snared 23 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown. Junior safety Chris Scott leads the defense with 54 tackles and two interceptions.

ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 412-460-39 (.474) all-time record. The Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.

AROUND THE BAHL:
Over the past three years, the name Bahl is synonymous with making big plays. This season has been no different as senior linebacker Jeff Bahl again leads the team in tackles and has added two more fumble recoveries to up his career total to 13. Against Catholic, another Bahl made his presence known as sophomore defensive lineman Andrew Bahl, recovered his first career fumble. The fumble, which was forced by Jeff, led to the Generals' game-winning score.

FEARSOME FOURSOME:
The strength of the W&L defense has always been its linebacking corps where the Generals have claimed at least one All-ODAC player every year since 1995. This season, W&L's defense is again anchored by its linebackers as all four are leading the team in tackles. Senior Jeff Bahl leads the team with 54 stops followed by sophomore Ben Krasnoff (38) and juniors Matt Stavish (33) and Andrew James (28). In addition, the four have combined to make 13.5 of the team's 24 tackles for loss and four of the five sacks.

LEFTY QB:
Sophomore Peter Dean is the starting quarterback after switching from the defensive back position he held last season. Dean is the first left-handed quarterback to assume starting duties at W&L in over five decades. Dean, who also plays baseball at W&L, posted a 6-0 record and 3.10 ERA on the mound last season.

NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN:
Though Marc Watson has received much of the publicity the last three years, junior running back Chris Sullivan has been very productive at the position. Sullivan was a Second Team All-ODAC selection at running back in 1999 after amassing 722 yards and seven touchdowns. He claims 1,306 career rushing yards and is just one yard from moving into the W&L all-time Top 10 in career rushing. A versatile back, Sullivan has also recorded 3,048 career all-purpose yards, fourth all-time at W&L. Watson holds the top spot with 4,429 career all-purpose yards although Sullivan leads the ODAC in all-purpose yards (175.6 ypg) this season.

KEEP IN MIND:
Senior running back Marc Watson is on his way to breaking a few more W&L career records. Watson is tied for the W&L career touchdown record with Kevin Weaver (1983-86) as he scored his 29th career touchdown on Saturday. Watson is also just five points away from breaking Weaver's career points record (182) and just 455 yards from breaking Stewart Atkinson's career rushing yards record (3,072).

MR. AUTOMATIC:
Senior placekicker Brad Wiginton has been almost automatic during his career. For his career, Wiginton has connected on 17-of-25 field goals and 80-of-85 PAT attempts. Wiginton holds the W&L record for career PAT's made and ranks fifth all-time in career field goals made. He can move into the W&L Top 5 in career scoring with 20 more points.

THE DRIFTER:
Sophomore safety Ted Maffitt has been trying to find a home this season. Maffitt, who played fullback last season, was switched to cornerback in the preseason to help sure up a thin secondary. Maffitt played the first three games at corner before moving to safety against Randolph-Macon two weeks ago. Since making the switch, Maffitt has recorded a pair of interceptions, including one to preserve the Generals' win against Catholic in the final minute. Maffitt caught one pass for 29 yards last season against Hampden-Sydney.

OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals' game at Randolph-Macon on September 29 was a real heart-breaker as the Yellow Jackets drove 95 yards to score the game-winner with 15 seconds remaining in the game. The loss to Macon marked the eighth time that the Generals have lost a game by seven points or less since the beginning of the 1998 season.d the eighth time that the Generals have lost a game by seven points or less since the beginning of the 1998 season.
