LAST TIME OUT:
Washington and Lee junior quarterback Sean McGarvey completed
25-of-46 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Generals
past Sewanee, 26-14, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals
assumed a 20-0 halftime lead as McGarvey found junior wide receiver
Jonathan Brimer, senior tight end Jay Thomas and senior wide receiver
Dyllan Rankin with scoring strikes of 20, 6 and 21 yards, respectively.
The Tigers stormed back in the third quarter as senior quarterback
Kirk Holtgrewe scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 10 yards to cut the
W&L lead to 20-14 with 8:27 remaining in the third quarter. W&L
senior running back Chris Sullivan capped the scoring with a 45-yard
touchdown run with 9:30 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the
Generals their fifth straight win over Sewanee. McGarvey's career
day paced the Generals offense. Sullivan rushed for 126 yards and
one touchdown on 29 carries, while Thomas caught seven passes for
51 yards and the one touchdown as W&L racked up a season-high
517 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Ben Krasnoff led the
Generals' defense with 14 tackles.
THE LAST MEETING WITH BRIDGEWATER:
(BC 34, W&L 28 in OT; October 27, 2001 - Lexington, Va.)
Tight end Van Williams caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from senior
quarterback Jason Lutz in overtime to lift Bridgewater to a 34-28
win over Washington and Lee. Bridgewater had a chance to win the game
with 16 seconds remaining in regulation, but placekicker Joel LeMasters
22-yard attempt was blocked by W&L senior linebacker Jeff Bahl
setting up the overtime. The Generals led the game 7-0 at the half
after wide receiver Allen DeBard hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass
with 11:59 remaining in the second quarter. The Eagles scored on their
first possession of the second half as senior running back Davon Cruz
found paydirt on a 1-yard run with 9:12 left in the third quarter.
The Generals responded on the ensuing kickoff as running back Chris
Sullivan returned the kick 89 yards for a touchdown to give W&L
a 14-7 lead. The Eagles again tied the score (14-14) as senior defensive
end Jeremy Fox stripped the ball away from senior running back Marc
Watson and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown with 3:07 remaining
in the third quarter. Washington and Lee responded on its next possession
as Watson scored on a 28-yard run to give the Generals a 21-14 lead.
However, the Eagles scored on the very next offensive play as senior
wide receiver Marcus Richardson hauled in a 52-yard touchdown reception
from Lutz to knot the score at 21-21. Watson fumbled the ensuing kickoff
and Cruz scored on a six-yard run three plays later to give the Eagles
a 28-21 lead with 14:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. W&L tied
the game at 28-28 with 4:58 remaining in regulation as Watson scored
on a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Peter Dean. Washington
and Lee was led by Sullivan, who rushed 27 times for 109 yards. Watson
carried the ball 18 times for 85 yards and caught four passes for
46 yards. Dean completed 13-of-27 attempts for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
Bridgewater was paced by Cruz, who rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns
on 30 carries. Richardson caught four passes for 107 yards, while
Lutz completed 9-of-21 attempts for 153 yards and two scores. Linebacker
Jermaine Taylor led the defense with 13 tackles and a sack.
SCOUTING BRIDGEWATER:
The Eagles are 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC, and are ranked second
in the Division III poll. Most recently, BC defeated Emory & Henry,
48-18, on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va. The Eagles led 48-3
before allowing a couple of late-fourth quarter scores. Senior quarterback
Robbie Jenkins completed 9-of-13 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns
to lead the BC offense. Senior wide receiver Brian Ratliff caught
four of those passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns. On the season,
Jenkins has completed 56.3 percent of his passes for 1,477 yards and
14 touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Nicholas Lehto is his favorite
target, having caught 20 passes for 371 yards and one touchdown. Ratliff
is the team's deep threat, catching 13 passes for 407 yards and five
touchdowns. The Eagles have used a pair of freshmen tailbacks, with
Jamie Langley receiving most of the work. He has rushed for 542 yards
and five touchdowns thus far. Junior linebacker Jermaine Taylor leads
the defense with 65 tackles, including 11 for a loss.
EXTRA FRAME:
W&L has played three overtime games in school history and
is 1-2 in those contests. Prior to a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns
Hopkins in week one, both of the overtime games had been against Bridgewater.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION:
Sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham has been a pleasant surprise
this season. Callaham leads the team in touchdowns (6), receptions
(27) and receiving yards (394). His six touchdowns receiving are just
two shy of the W&L single-season record held by Bruce Green since
the 1969 season. Callaham caught nine passes for 73 yards last season.
MOVIN' ON UP:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan continues to move up the W&L
career record charts. Sullivan has set a new standard for career all-purpose
yards (5,451), eclipsing the record of 5,184 set by Marc Watson last
season. Sullivan is also 323 yards away from breaking Watson's school
career rushing record (3,112). Sullivan currently leads the ODAC in
rushing (110.4 ypg.) and all-purpose yards (181.9 ypg.).
McGARVEY THE MAN?:
The Generals have featured a quarterback carousel since losing
Peter Dean with a knee injury. Junior Sean McGarvey and freshman Greg
Tweardy have split time at the position in the last three games, but
McGarvey may have taken control of the situation. McGarvey had a career
day against Sewanee on Saturday, passing for 301 yards and three touchdowns.
His passing yards were the most by a W&L signal caller since Christian
Batcheller threw for 309 against Bridgewater during the 1999 season.
Heading into the game, McGarvey had thrown for just 346 yards and
three touchdowns in his three-year career.
OFFENSIVE OUTBREAK:
The Generals tallied 517 yards of total offense on Saturday against
Sewanee, shattering the previous season-high mark of 335 yards set
at Guilford in week number two. In fact, the 517 yards were the most
by a W&L offensive unit since the Generals racked-up 567 yards
against Swarthmore during the 1999 season.
FIRST HALF TURNAROUND:
Heading into the Sewanee game, the Generals had scored just 18
first-half points while allowing 57 points to their opponents. W&L
reversed its first half fortunes against the Tigers, tallying 20 points
for a 20-0 halftime lead.
ON A ROLL:
Junior nose tackle Jess Lipsey has been on a roll of late, amassing
10 tackles in each of the last two games. An Honorable Mention All-ODAC
selection last season, Lipsey has totaled 36 tackles this season,
including six for a loss.
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE:
The Generals' defense has forced 123 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 37 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent
memory, including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one.
All told, W&L has lost 11 games by seven points or less since
the beginning of the 1998 season.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 418-465-39 (.475) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
