LAST TIME OUT:
The Washington and Lee football team upped its record to 2-2 overall, 2-0 in the ODAC with a 7-3 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. Randolph-Macon produced a 14-play, 64-yard drive and had a first and goal on the W&L 6-yard line with under a minute remaining; however, the W&L defense held on four plays and the Generals ran out the final 33 seconds for the win. The Yellow Jackets assumed a 3-0 lead with 1:49 remaining in the first quarter as sophomore placekicker David Ping booted a 42-yard field goal. The Generals answered with 7:55 remaining in the first half as junior quarterback Peter Dean found junior wide receiver Jonathan Brimer with a 20-yard scoring strike. Washington and Lee was led by Dean, who completed 16-of-33 attempts for 201 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Senior running back Chris Sullivan rushed for 89 yards on 27 carries, breaking a string of eight consecutive 100-yard rushing performances. Brimer caught three passes for 57 yards and one touchdown. The W&L defense was led by junior linebacker Ben Krasnoff, who totaled 12 tackles and forced a fumble. Randolph-Macon was led by senior quarterback Hunter Price, who completed 26-of-45 passes for 204 yards. Senior running back David Strong hauled in nine passes for 66 yards, while senior safety Bobby Akers recorded eight tackles.

THE LAST MEETING WITH CATHOLIC:
(W&L 18, CUA 12; October 6, 2001 - Lexington, Va.)
Washington and Lee held Catholic to just 19 yards rushing in defeating the Cardinals, 18-12 at Wilson Field. The Generals trailed Catholic, 12-7, in the fourth quarter before CUA's Dennis Campbell fumbled a kick return on his own 5-yard line with 11:35 left to play. W&L senior linebacker Jeff Bahl forced the fumble and his brother, Andrew, recovered the ball. W&L took advantage two plays later as senior running back Marc Watson scored from 1-yard out. The Generals attempt at a two-point conversion was good and they led 15-12. W&L upped its lead to 18-12 with 7:08 remaining as senior placekicker Brad Wiginton nailed a 31-yard field goal. The Cardinals failed to convert on a 4th-and-10 play from the W&L 30-yard line with 2:17 remaining in the game. However, CUA got the ball back with 1:30 remaining and drove to the Generals’ 36 yard line before senior quarterback Derek McGee was picked off by W&L sophomore safety Ted Maffitt. Maffitt returned the ball to the Catholic 11-yard line and the Generals ran out the clock for their second ODAC victory of the season. W&L was led by Watson, who caught 10 passes for 70 yards and rushed seven times for 31 yards and a touchdown. Running back Chris Sullivan rushed 31 times for 80 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Peter Dean completed 19-of-32 attempts for 154 yards. Jeff Bahl led the W&L defense with 10 tackles and two sacks. Catholic was paced by McGee, who completed 22-of-53 attempts for 241 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Wide receiver Nick Bublavi caught seven passes for 90 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Jeff Tabery recorded a game-high 12 tackles and assisted on a sack.

SCOUTING CATHOLIC:
Catholic is 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the ODAC after defeating LaSalle on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Trailing 15-14 in the third quarter, the Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 26-15 win. Sophomore wide receiver Nick Bublavi led CUA with five catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Tokollo Moffat rushed 29 times for 117 yards and a touchdowns, while senior quarterback Bill Sutton completed 15-of-35 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Senior linebacker Jeff Tabery led the Cardinal defense with 10 tackles. On the season, Bublavi leads the ODAC with 432 receiving yards on 23 catches. He has found the end zone five times. Sutton has completed 45.0 percent of his passes for 984 yards and six touchdowns, while senior running back James Vollono has rushed for 194 yards and one touchdown on 65 carries. Moffat has 161 yards and one touchdown on 39 rushes. Junior defensive back Justin Kelly leads the CUA defense with 31 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions.

ALL-EVERYTHING:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan is not only an all-purpose back, he's an all-everything back. A First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State, Third Team All-Region and Third Team AP Little All-America selection last season, Sullivan was the 2001 Division III all-purpose yards champion. Sullivan has picked up where he left off the 2001 campaign by averaging 133.8 yards rushing and 198.2 all-purpose yards per game. In addition, Sullivan just needs 561 rushing yards and 214 all-purpose yards to become the W&L career leader in both categories. He is a First Team Preseason All-America selection as an all-purpose runner by Lindy's College Football Preview Magazine.

DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Junior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals' baseball team. For his career, Dean claims 2,041 yards passing with 14 touchdowns on the football field. On the mound, Dean earned First Team All-ODAC honors last season after posting a 6-3 overall record and a 2.12 ERA. Through two seasons, Dean is 12-3 with a 2.45 ERA. His career ERA is the lowest in W&L history.

STERLING STAVISH:
Senior linebacker Matt Stavish, a native of Sterling, Va., has been putting forth a sterling effort for the 2002 season. Thus far, Stavish leads the ODAC in sacks (1.25 spg.) and is third in tackles (9.8 tpg.). A starter for the third-straight season, Stavish has posted 200 tackles (27.5 for a loss), 5.5 sacks and six interceptions for his career.

ON THE SUBJECT:
On the subject of defensive prowess, junior defensive back Ted Maffitt is also having an outstanding start to the 2002 campaign. Maffitt leads the ODAC with an average of one interception per game and is fifth in the conference in tackles (8.8 tpg.). In just 11 games as a starter at defensive back, Maffitt claims nine career interceptions.

FURTHERMORE:
In addition, junior linebacker Ben Krasnoff leads the ODAC in tackles (11.3 tpg.). Krasnoff missed the Generals' opener due to an injury but already claims 34 total stops.

TURNOVER TALLY:
One of W&L's strengths over the last five years has been turnover margin. During that span, the Generals have forced 118 turnovers (2.7 per game) while committing just 75 turnovers (1.7 per game) themselves. W&L surrendered only 16 turnovers in 2001, forcing 26 miscues by its opponents, including 18 interceptions. W&L has forced 12 turnovers in just four games this season, an average of 3.0 turnovers per game.

TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE:
Though the Generals claim 118 turnovers since the beginning of the 1998 season, they have only scored one defensive touchdown during that span. In fact, W&L has gone 35 straight games without scoring a defensive touchdown.

SEEIN' YELLOW:
The Generals saw plenty of yellow in their last outing against Randolph-Macon. W&L was penalized eight times for 76 yards, more than doubling its total from the first three games (7- for-62). The eight penalties were the most since a 45-28 loss to Hampden-Sydney (8-for-87) during the 2000 season.. Even so, the Generals are the least penalized team in the ODAC (34.5 ypg.). On the flip side, Catholic is the most penalized team in the conference (78.8 ypg.).

OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent memory, including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one. All told, W&L has lost 11 games by seven points or less since the beginning of the 1998 season.
