W&L and needs 15 more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second
place. He is 4-2-1 all-time against Centre. The Colonels are led by
fifth-year head coach Andy Frye (Muskingum '81). He is 25-18 (.581)
at Centre and in his career. Frye is 1-3 all-time against W&L.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 416-462-39 (.475) all-time record. The Generals
have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played
in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
Washington and Lee junior quarterback Peter Dean faked a spike and
then connected with sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham on a 17-yard
touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining to give the Generals a 31-30
victory over Guilford on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. W&L
stopped the Quakers on a fourth-and-three play from the W&L 20-yard
line with 1:30 remaining in the game as junior linebacker Ben Krasnoff
corralled Guilford running back Brandon Lockhart for a two-yard loss.
The Generals then drove 78 yards in seven plays for the game-winning
score. Guilford assumed a 30-18 lead with 11:18 remaining in the fourth
quarter as defensive back Sherod Long intercepted Dean and rumbled
58 yards for a touchdown. The Generals began their comeback as senior
running back Chris Sullivan scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to cut
the GC lead to 30-25 with 7:26 remaining. The Washington and Lee offense
was led by Sullivan, who rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns on
39 carries. He also tallied two catches for 33 yards and a touchdown,
returned two kickoffs for 59 yards and returned two punts for 21 yards
in amassing 294 all-purpose yards. Dean completed 10-of-23 attempts

THE LAST MEETING WITH CENTRE:
(CC 42, W&L 10; September 22, 2001 - Lexington, Va.)
Centre College scored 21 first quarter points en route to a 42-10
win over Washington and Lee at Wilson Field. The Colonels opened the
scoring with 13:53 remaining in the opening quarter as running back
Jeremy Britt scored on a 44-yard touchdown run. Washington and Lee
responded on its next possession as senior placekicker Brad Wiginton
booted a 33-yard field goal with 10:50 left in the quarter. Centre
answered right back as senior cornerback Brian Britt returned a punt
57 yards for a touchdown to give the Colonels a 14-3 lead. Senior
wide receiver Joe Guthrie rounded out the first quarter scoring as
he scored on a 16-yard reception with 3:57 remaining in the quarter.
Jeremy Britt scored his second touchdown of the day on a 6-yard run
with 6:24 left in the third quarter and senior running back Travis
Bell extended the Centre lead to 35-3 with a 15-yard touchdown run
with 1:40 remaining in the quarter. Washington and Lee capped the

Dean completed just 5-of-20 attempts for 52 yards. He was picked off
once. Senior linebacker Jeff Bahl led the defense with 11 tackles.
SCOUTING CENTRE:
Centre enters its game with W&L sporting a 3-0 overall record.
Most recently, the Colonels defeated Rhodes College, 28-7, on Saturday
afternoon in Memphis, Tenn. Centre broke open a 7-7 game after one
quarter with two scoring strikes from sophomore quarterback Brian
Behrendt to senior wide receiver Bryan Walker for a 21-7 lead at the
half. Behrendt found Walker again in the fourth quarter for a 15-yard
touchdown to provide the final margin. The Colonels managed just 28
yards rushing on the afternoon, but passed for 302 yards and held
Rhodes to just 3-of-9 on fourth down conversions. Behrendt completed
24-of-39 attempts for 302 yards and the three touchdowns. Walker caught
five passes for 138 yards and three scores, while junior defensive
back Kevin Tytus led the defense with 11 tackles and four pass breakups.
On the season, Behrendt has completed 60.5 percent of his passes for
889 yards and eight touchdowns. He's been intercepted just four times.
Junior wide receiver Adam Schneider has grabbed 13 passes for 205
yards and two scores and Walker has hauled in nine passes for 182
yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore linebacker Brian Downs has led
the defense with 32 tackles and three pass breakups.
W&L vs. THE SOUTHERN COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE:
W&L sports a 56-64-3 (.468) all-time record against the current
members of the SCAC. However, the Generals have taken seven of the
last eight games against the SCAC. Here is a breakdown:
Centre (20-32-2)
DePauw (0-0)
Millsaps (0-0)
Rhodes (6-11-1)
Rose-Hulman (0-0)
Sewanee (30-21)
Trinity (0-0)
ALL-EVERYTHING:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan is not only an all-purpose back,
he's an all-everything back. A First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State,
Third Team All-Region and Third Team AP Little All-America selection
last season, Sullivan was the 2001 Division III all-purpose yards
champion. Sullivan has picked up where he left off the 2001 campaign
by posting his sixth and seventh consecutive 100-yard rushing efforts
in the Generals' first two games this season. Sullivan needs 763 rushing
yards and 505 all-purpose yards to become the W&L career leader
in both categories. He is a First Team Preseason All-America selection
as an all-purpose runner by Lindy's College Football Preview Magazine.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Junior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. For his career, Dean has completed 48.6 percent of
his passes for 1,714 yards and 11 touchdowns. On the mound, Dean earned
First Team All-ODAC honors last season after posting a 6-3 overall
record and a 2.12 ERA. Through two seasons, Dean is 12-3 with a 2.45
ERA. His career ERA is the lowest in W&L history.
STERLING STAVISH:
Senior linebacker Matt Stavish, a native of Sterling, Va., has been
putting forth a sterling effort in the first two weeks of the 2002
season. Thus far, Stavish leads the ODAC in scaks (3.5) and leads
the team with 18 tackles. He also claims two interceptions and four
pass breakups on the season. A starter for the third straight season,
Stavish has posted 179 tackles (25 for a loss), five sacks and six
interceptions for his career.
ON THE SUBJECT:
On the subject of defensive prowess, junior defensive back Ted Maffitt
is also having an outstanding start to the 2002 campaign. Maffitt
totaled nine tackles and two interceptions in the season-opener against
Hopkins and tallied four tackles and an interception against Guilford.
In just nine games as a starter at defensive back, Maffitt claims
eight career interceptions. He earned Honorable Mention All-ODAC honors
last season after snagging five picks and making 59 stops.
TURNOVER TALLY:
One of W&L's strengths over the last five years has been turnover
margin. During that span, the Generals have forced 114 turnovers (2.7
per game) while committing just 69 turnovers (1.6 per game) themselves.
W&L surrendered only 16 turnovers in 2001, forcing 26 miscues
by its opponents, including 18 interceptions. W&L has forced eight
turnovers already in just two games this season.
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE ALREADY:
Though the Generals claim 114 turnovers since the beginning of the
1998 season, they have only scored one defensive touchown during that
span. In fact, W&L has gone 33 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent memory,
including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one. All
told, W&L has lost 10 games by seven points or less since the
beginning of the 1998 season.
