THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his eighth season as the
head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims a 36-40-1
(.474) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories at
W&L. He is 0-7 all-time against Emory & Henry. The Wasps are
led by 21st-year head coach Lou Wacker (Richmond '58), who has posted
a 154-64 (.706) overall record in his only head coaching position.
Wacker is 19-1 all-time against W&L and hasn't lost to the Generals
since his rookie season as a head coach.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Washington and Lee football team committed seven turnovers which
led to 28 Bridgewater points in a 44-14 loss to the second-ranked
Eagles on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va. The Generals trailed
just 24-14 entering the fourth quarter, but BC scored on each of its
final three possessions, including a 65-yard interception return for
a touchdown by Jared Brice with 1:47 remaining in the game. The Eagles
assumed a 17-0 lead with 11:14 remaining in the first half before
the Generals struck with a pair of touchdowns to cut the deficit to
17-14 at the half. Senior running back Chris Sullivan scored on a
1-yard run with 3:17 remaining in the half and again on a 36-yard
touchdown pass from junior quarterback Sean McGarvey with 13 seconds
remaining. Sullivan led the W&L offense with 84 yards and one
touchdown on 21 carries. He also caught three passes for 39 yards
and a score. McGarvey completed 16-of-31 passes for 203 yards, but
was intercepted five times. The W&L defense held Bridgewater to
a season-low 316 yards of total offense and was led by sophomore linebacker
Lloyd Wilson, who posted 13 tackles and a sack. Offensively, the Eagles
were led by quarterback Robbie Jenkins' two touchdowns rushing and
two more passing. Wide receiver Andre Jones caught five passes for
62 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Jermaine Taylor
totaled 16 tackles and a sack.
THE LAST MEETING WITH EMORY & HENRY:
(E&H 35, W&L 17; November 3, 2001 - Emory, Va.)
Washington and Lee outgained Emory & Henry, 385-259, but could
not overcome several crucial errors on special teams in falling to
the Wasps, 35-17. Emory & Henry scored following two blocked punts
and a fumbled kickoff return. The Wasps opened the scoring in the
first quarter as punter Whit Whitfields kick was blocked and
returned to the Generals 11-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback
Shannon Johnson scored on a 7-yard run to give the Wasps a 7-0 lead.
The Generals answered on the first play of the second quarter as quarterback
Peter Dean found tight end Jay Thomas with a 12-yard scoring strike
to knot the score at 7-7. W&L assumed a 14-7 lead with 7:19 remaining
in the third quarter as senior running back Marc Watson scored on
a 4-yard run. However, Emory & Henry would tie the game at 14-14
with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter as Willie Johnson returned
another blocked Whitfield punt eight yards for a touchdown. The Generals
again responded as senior placekicker Brad Wiginton booted a 22-yard
field goal just 44 seconds into the fourth quarter to give W&L
a 17-14 lead. The Wasps assumed a 21-17 lead with 10:15 remaining
in the contest as Johnson found wide receiver Brett Kickliter with
a 14-yard touchdown pass. Dean was then intercepted on the Generals
next possession and E&H running back Dan Hammonds scored on a
30-yard run on the next play to put the Wasps up 28-17. The Generals
fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Johnson tossed his second touchdown
pass to Kickliter, this time from 1-yard out to provide the final
margin. Washington and Lee was led by running back Chris Sullivan,
who rushed for 162 yards on 32 carries. Watson carried 10 times for
103 yards and one touchdown, while Dean completed 11-of-27 attempts
for 104 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Matt Stavish led the defense
with seven tackles. E&H was led by Johnson, who passed for 136
yards and two scores and rushed for 29 yards and another touchdown.
Linebacker Phil Christian led the defense with 13 tackles and a sack.
SCOUTING EMORY & HENRY:
The Wasps are 3-5 overall, 1-3 in the ODAC, following a 48-47 win
over Catholic on Saturday. E&H led 48-41 late in the game, but
Catholic scored on the final play of the game to cut the deficit to
48-47. The PAT failed, allowing the Wasps to claim their first ODAC
victory of the season. Emory & Henry was led by junior quarterback
Shannon Johnson, who completed 9-of-26 passes for 192 yards and four
touchdowns. Two of the scoring strikes went to junior wide receiver
Dorsey Hooker, who caught three balls for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
Junior running back Dan Hammonds ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns
as well. On the season, Johnson has completed 42.7 percent of his
passes for 1,332 yards and seven touchdowns. He also leads the Wasps
in rushing with 327 yards and four touchdowns on 114 carries. Hammonds
has rushed for 273 yards and six touchdowns on 64 carries, while senior
wide receiver Adam Davis has caught 27 passes for 361 yards and one
touchdown. Sophomore linebacker Jared Beasley leads the E&H defense
with 60 tackles, 11 for a loss, and three sacks.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION:
Sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham has been a pleasant surprise
this season. Callaham leads the team in touchdowns (6), receptions
(33) and receiving yards (454). His six touchdowns receiving are just
two shy of the W&L single-season record held by Bruce Green since
the 1969 season. Callaham caught nine passes for 73 yards last season.
MOVIN' ON UP:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan continues to move up the W&L
career record charts. Sullivan has set a new standard for career all-purpose
yards (5,601), eclipsing the record of 5,184 set by Marc Watson last
season. Sullivan is also 238 yards away from breaking Watson's school
career rushing record (3,112). Sullivan currently leads the ODAC in
rushing (107.1 ypg.) and all-purpose yards (177.9 ypg.).
TURNOVER TALK:
Washington and Lee committed seven turnovers in its 44-14 loss to
Bridgewater on Saturday. The seven turnovers were the most by a W&L
team since committing seven in a 26-23 loss at Sewanee during the
1993 season. W&L's 23 turnovers this season are already the most
since committing 25 during the 1997 season. W&L had averaged just
15.3 a year from 1999-2001 and ranked among the leaders in Division
III in turnover margin during that span.
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE:
The Generals' defense has forced 124 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 39 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the 1998 season.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent memory,
including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one. All
told, W&L has lost 11 games by seven points or less since the
beginning of the 1998 season.
THE EXORCIST:
W&L is searching for an exorcist who can expell the demons which
have haunted the Generals against Emory & Henry in recent years.
Of the games spoken about in the previous note, two of the 11 losses
were to the Wasps. In 1997, W&L led the Wasps 17-6 until the Wasps
scored three touchdowns in the final 8:30 for a 27-17 win. In 1998,
W&L led E&H 20-6 until the Wasps scored a safety and two touchdowns
in the final 6:02 for a 23-20 win. In 1999, the Generals held a 21-17
lead until a Wasp touchdown and missed extra point gave E&H a
23-21 lead with 4:16 remaining. The Generals had one last chance,
but missed a 35-yard field goal with 1:42 remaining which would have
given them the lead. Last season, W&L held a 17-14 lead until
E&H scored three touchdowns in the final 10:15 of the game to
post another fourth quarter victory.
HE'S BACK:
Junior quarterback Peter Dean will be back in the starting lineup
against Emory & Henry on Saturday after missing the last four
games with a knee injury. Before going down, Dean had led the Generals
to a 2-2 overall record, 2-0 in the ODAC. He had completed 44.1 percent
of his passes for 617 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions.
In Dean's absence, junior Sean McGarvey and freshman Greg Tweardy
had combined to complete 70-of-149 passes for 921 yards, eight touchdowns
and 10 interceptions. McGarvey passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns
in leading the Generals to a win over Sewanee on Oct. 26.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 418-466-39 (.474) all-time record. The Generals
have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played
in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
