LAST TIME OUT:
The Washington and Lee football team ended a streak of 19 consecutive
losses to Emory & Henry with a 22-9 victory over the Wasps on
Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals had not beaten E&H
since a 21-15 win on September 18, 1982. W&L assumed a 7-0 lead
just 3:04 into the game as senior running back Chris Sullivan scored
on a 7-yard touchdown run. The Wasps responded with 7:20 remaining
in the opening quarter as sophomore placekicker David Burks booted
a 21-yard field goal to cut the W&L lead to 7-3. The Generals
went up 14-3 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Sullivan with 9:17 remaining
in the half, but E&H junior running back Dan Hammonds scored on
a 2-yard run with 2:23 remaining in the half to again cut the W&L
lead to 14-9. The ensuing two-point conversion failed and the teams
went to the half with W&L leading, 14-9. Both teams played a scoreless
third quarter before Sullivan galloped 19 yards to paydirt with 7:30
remaining in the game. The two-point conversion pass was successful
and the Generals' defense held for the 22-9 win. W&L was led by
Sullivan, who rushed 44 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns.
He needs just 68 yards next week to break Marc Watson's school career
rushing record of 3,112 yards. Junior quarterback Peter Dean returned
to the lineup, completing 11-of-28 passes for 109 yards and two interceptions.
Sophomore fullback Chris Caramore rushed for 42 yards on nine carries
and caught five passes for 46 yards. Sophomore linebacker Lloyd Wilson
led the W&L defense with nine tackles, while senior defensive
end Brett Burns recorded six tackles and two sacks.
THE LAST MEETING WITH GREENSBORO:
(W&L 46, GC 14; November 10, 2001 - Lexington, Va.)
Washington and Lee forced four turnovers and outgained Greensboro,
493-200, in defeating the Pride, 46-14, at Wilson Field. The Generals
were led by senior running back Marc Watson, who rushed for 142 yards
and two touchdowns and caught five passes for 74 yards. Watson became
W&Ls career rushing leader on a 41-yard touchdown run with
8:17 remaining in the game. Watson was complimented by running back
Chris Sullivan, who rushed for 118 yards and three scores. Sullivan
also returned a punt 71 yards to the Pride 2-yard line setting up
senior fullback Kyle Overstreets 1-yard touchdown run with 13:00
remaining in the game. The Generals opened the scoring on a 13-yard
touchdown run by Watson with 8:38 remaining in the first quarter.
Sullivan then scored all three of his touchdowns in the second quarter,
the last coming with 21 seconds left in the half. Greensboro returned
the ensuing kickoff to the W&L 35-yard line and got on the board
two plays later as wide receiver George Washington hauled in a 20-yard
touchdown pass from senior quarterback Tommy Waters as time expired
in the first half. For the Generals, quarterback Peter Dean completed
14-of-23 attempts for 177 yards, while tight end Jay Thomas snared
four passes for 68 yards. Senior linebacker Jeff Bahl amassed 11 tackles,
blocked a punt and recovered a fumble. Greensboro was led by slotback
Quentin Caldwell, who rushed for 50 yards and one touchdown on eight
carries. Waters completed 8-of-22 attempts for 105 yards and one touchdown,
but was intercepted three times. Linebacker Josh Daniels led the Pride
defense with 13 tackles and a fumble recovery.
SCOUTING GREENSBORO:
The Pride is 4-5 overall following a 13-3 win over Methodist on Saturday
at Jamieson Stadium. The Greensboro defense allowed a field goal with
7:29 remaining in the opening quarter then shut down the Monarchs
for the rest of the game in claiming the win. Junior kicker Eric Naglee
booted two field goals and sophomore running back Quentin Caldwell
scored on a 21-yard run for the Pride. Caldwell led the way with 122
yards on 15 carries, while sophomore running back Marc Clapp totaled
93 yards on 21 carries. Sophomore quarterback Anthony Durham completed
8-of-14 passes for 79 yards, while junior linebacker Mike Osinska
and senior linebacker Josh Daniels led the defense with 11 tackles
each. On the season, Caldwell has rushed 193 times for 823 yards and
three touchdowns, while Durham has completed 43.2 percent of his passes
for 1,401 yards and 11 touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Ricky Moore
has hauled in 29 passes for 416 yards and a team-leading seven touchdowns.
Senior wide receiver Justin Wilder has caught 42 passes for 409 yards
and three scores. Daniels leads the defense with 81 tackles and eight
sacks.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION:
Sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham has been a pleasant surprise
this season. Callaham leads the team in touchdowns (6), receptions
(35) and receiving yards (475). His six touchdowns receiving are just
two shy of the W&L single-season record held by Bruce Green since
the 1969 season. Callaham caught nine passes for 73 yards last season.
MOVIN' ON UP:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan continues to move up the W&L
career record charts. Sullivan has set a new standard for career all-purpose
yards (5,832), eclipsing the record of 5,184 set by Marc Watson last
season. The NCAA currently lists the top 17 all-time Division III
all-purpose yard gainers and Sullivan needs just 213 all-purpose yards
against Greensboro to climb into the 17th spot. In addition, Sullivan
is just 68 yards away from breaking Watson's school career rushing
record (3,112). Ironically, Watson set that record last season against
the Pride.
TURNOVER TALK:
Washington and Lee committed seven turnovers in its 44-14 loss to
Bridgewater. The seven turnovers were the most by a W&L team since
committing seven in a 26-23 loss at Sewanee during the 1993 season.
W&L's 25 turnovers this season are already the most since committing
25 during the 1997 season. W&L had averaged just 15.3 a year from
1999-2001 and ranked among the leaders in Division III in turnover
margin during that span.
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE:
The Generals' defense has forced 126 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 40 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the 1998 season.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent memory,
including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one. All
told, W&L has lost 11 games by seven points or less since the
beginning of the 1998 season.
BURNS NAMED ODAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Senior defensive end Brett Burns was named the ODAC Defensive Player
of the Week following his performance against Emory & Henry on
Saturday. Burns helped spearhead a defensive unit which allowed just
258 yards of total offense to the Wasps. He recorded six tackles and
a career-high two sacks in the game. On the season, Burns has totaled
a career-high 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
THE BIG NASTIES:
A large part of Washington and Lee's success on offense has been the
play of the offensive line. The Generals have allowed just 11 sacks
in 282 passing attempts and are averaging 136.4 rushing yards per
game. All five starters returned from the last season when they allowed
just 10 sacks in 276 passing attempts. The 21 sacks allowed by the
line during the last two seasons are equal to the total of sacks posted
by the Generals' defense this season. Leaders of the line are senior
First Team All-American Mat Rapoza and junior First Team All-ODAC
performer Scott Kucinski.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 419-466-39 (.475) all-time record. The Generals
have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played
in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
