have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played
in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
Johns Hopkins used an 84-yard touchdown drive in the final 1:20 of
regulation and scored another touchdown in overtime to defeat Washington
and Lee, 21-14, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals
went up 14-7 on a 10-yard touchdown run by senior running back Chris
Sullivan with 1:20 remaining in regulation. However, Johns Hopkins
senior quarterback Rob Fernand led the Blue Jays on a 6-play, 84-yard
drive capped by a 34-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver
Brian Wolcott with 15 seconds remaining to knot the game at 14-14.
In the overtime period, Fernand found Wolcott again for a 24-yard
gain to the one-yard line then called his own number one play later
to give Hopkins the 21-14 lead. The JHU defense then held on four
plays to preserve the overtime victory. Sullivan led the W&L offense

caught eight passes for 125 yards for the W&L offense. Senior
linebacker Jeff Bahl led the Generals defense with 13 tackles,
an assisted sack and a fumble recovery.
SCOUTING GUILFORD:
Guilford enters its game with W&L sporting a 1-1 overall record.
The Quakers began the season with a 44-0 loss to Division II Carson
Newman before bouncing back to defeat Methodist last week by a 41-18
count. Guilford was led by junior running back Marcus Ballard, who
tied a school record with four touchdowns. Ballard rushed for 126
yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and caught two passes for 90
yards and two more scores. Sophomore quarterback Josh Smith completed
13-of-23 tosses for 228 yards and two touchdowns, while senior wide
receiver Chris McKinney caught five passes for 61 yards. Sophomore
defensive lineman Chris Kinton led the Quaker defense with eight tackles

scores on 25 carries, while Smith has completed 16-of-36 passes for
333 yards and two touchdowns. McKinney claims a team-high eight catches
for 165 yards. Senior defensive back J.J. Edwards leads the defense
with 12 tackles and one interception.
W&L vs. THE OLD DOMINION ATHLETIC
CONFERENCE:
W&L sports a 50-76-1 (.398) all-time record in the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference and is 90-99-5 (.477) all-time against the current
members of the ODAC. The following is a breakdown of the Generals
vs. members of the ODAC:
Bridgewater (22-10)
Catholic (5-1)
Emory & Henry (6-25)
Guilford (7-8)
Hampden-Sydney (29-29-2)
Randolph-Macon (21-25-3)
ALL-EVERYTHING:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan is not only an all-purpose back,
he's an all-everything back. A First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State,
Third Team All-Region and Third Team AP Little All-America selection
last season, Sullivan was the 2001 Division III all-purpose yards
champion. Sullivan picked up where he left off the 2001 campaign by
posting his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing effort and totaling
208 all-purpose yards in last week's contest. Sullivan needs 944 rushing
yards and 799 all-purpose yards to become the W&L career leader
in both categories. He is a First Team Preseason All-America selection
as an all-purpose runner by Lindy's College Football Preview Magazine.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Junior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. For his career, Dean has completed 49.0 percent of
his passes for 1,570 yards and nine touchdowns. On the mound, Dean
earned First Team All-ODAC honors last season after posting a 6-3
overall record and a 2.12 ERA. Through two seasons, Dean is 12-3 with
a 2.45 ERA. His career ERA is the lowest in W&L history.
MAKING A NAME:
Several young receivers made a name for the themselves on Saturday
in the loss to Hopkins. The trio of junior wide receiver Jon Brimer,
sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham and sophomore tight end Patrick
Neuman combined to make nine of the Generals' 12 receptions in the
ball game. All three combined to post just 11 catches for 119 yards
all of last season.
STERLING STAVISH:
Senior linebacker Matt Stavish, a native of Sterling, Va., put forth
a sterling effort in week one against Johns Hopkins. Stavish totaled
11 tackles, two sacks, two pass breakups and one interception to lead
the W&L defense. A starter for the third straight season, Stavish
claims 172 tackles (22 for a loss), 3.5 sacks and four interceptions
for his career.
ON THE SUBJECT:
On the subject of defensive prowess, junior defensive back Ted Maffitt
also had an outstanding season-opener for the Generals. Maffitt totaled
nine tackles and two interceptions against Hopkins, raising his career
interception total to seven. Maffitt earned Honorable Mention All-ODAC
honors last season after snagging five picks and making 59 stops.
TURNOVER TALLY:
One of W&L's strengths over the last five years has been turnover
margin. During that span, the Generals have forced 110 turnovers (2.7
per game) while committing just 66 turnovers (1.6 per game) themselves.
W&L surrendered only 16 turnovers in 2001, forcing 26 miscues
by its opponents, including 18 interceptions. In the season-opener
against Hopkins, W&L forced four turnovers while committing just
one.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent memory,
including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins last week. All told,
W&L has lost 10 games by seven points or less since the beginning
of the 1998 season.
