LAST TIME OUT:
Centre College generated 13 points off of Washington and Lee turnovers
and hung on to defeat the Generals, 19-13, on Saturday afternoon in
Danville, Ky. Centre put its first points on the board after W&L
junior quarterback Peter Dean fumbled on the Generals' five yard line.
One play later, Centre quarterback Brian Behrendt found wide receiver
Bryan Walker for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 12:05 remaining
in the first half. The Colonels took advantage of another W&L
fumble with time winding down in the first half as Nick Zilich booted
a 32-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining for a 10-0 Centre lead.
Following an interception by junior defensive back Ted Maffitt, the
Generals got on the scoreboard with an 11-yard touchdown pass from
Dean to sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham to cut the Colonels'
lead to 10-7. A trio of Zilich field goals upped the Colonel lead
to 19-7 before the Generals rallied with a 35-yard touchdown pass
from Dean to Callaham with 4:28 remaining in the game. However, the
Generals would never regain possession as the Colonels strung together
first downs and ran out the clock. W&L was led by senior tailback
Chris Sullivan, who racked up 115 yards rushing on 29 carries. For
Sullivan, it was his school-record tying eighth-straight 100-yard
rushing performance. Dean completed 7-of-18 passes for 126 yards and
two touchdowns, while Callaham caught four balls for 67 yards and
two touchdowns. Maffitt was the Generals' defensive leader, tallying
15 tackles, intercepting a pass, recovering a fumble and registering
a sack.
THE LAST MEETING WITH RANDOLPH-MACON:
(R-MC 28, W&L 24; September 29, 2001 - Ashland, Va.)
Randolph Macon quarterback Hunter Price connected with wide receiver
Derrick Jackson on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds remaining
to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 28-24 victory over Washington and
Lee at Day Field. The Yellow Jackets marched 95 yards in just 1:24
for the winning touchdown. After a scoreless first quarter, Randolph-Macon
jumped on the board first as running back E.J. Bush scored on a 1-yard
run. The extra point made it 7-0. W&L responded with 53 seconds
to play in the first half when Dean connected with tight end Jay Thomas
from four yards out to knot the score at 7-7 at the half. It was Deans
first touchdown pass of his career. The teams traded touchdowns in
the third quarter as W&L senior running back Marc Watson scored
on a 3-yard run with 9:50 to play. The Yellow Jackets tied the score
at 14-14 as David Strong scored on a 5-yard run with 6:13 left in
the third quarter. Bush scored his second touchdown just 53 seconds
into the fourth quarter on a 3-yard rush. Senior placekicker Brad
Wiginton connected on a 29-yard field goal with 9:33 to play that
sliced the Yellow Jacket lead to 21-17. Dean then connected with Sullivan
on a 71-yard touchdown pass with 5:27 left that gave W&L a 24-21
lead. W&L was led by Sullivan, who collected a career-high 202
yards on 35 carries and caught two passes for 78 yards and one touchdown.
Sullivan finished the day with a career-high 300 all-purpose yards.
Thomas caught four passes for 61 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker
Ben Krasnoff led the defense with 12 tackles, including two for losses.
Price finished 23-of-32 for 356 yards and one touchdown. He also had
18 carries for 68 yards. Justin Basdikis caught 12 passes for 167
yards.
SCOUTING RANDOLPH-MACON:
Randolph-Macon is 3-1 overall, 1-0 in the ODAC after defeating Catholic
on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Va. The Yellow Jackets were outgained,
401-274, but controlled the ball for over 35 minutes in the win. Senior
quarterback Hunter Price passed for two touchdowns and ran for another
to lead the Yellow Jackets' offense. Junior running back E.J. Bush
was the recipient of one touchdown pass and ran for 38 yards and another
score for R-MC. Senior defensive back Bobby Akers led the Macon defense
with 11 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, and an interception. On the season,
Price has completed 56.5 percent of his passes for 828 yards, seven
touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has also gained 81 yards
and a touchdown on the ground. Bush has gained 201 yards and one touchdown
on 69 carries, while senior wide receiver Marshall Haggard leads the
receiving crew with 20 catches for 223 yards and one touchdown. Akers
leads the defense with 33 tackles and two interceptions.
ALL-EVERYTHING:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan is not only an all-purpose back,
he's an all-everything back. A First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State,
Third Team All-Region and Third Team AP Little All-America selection
last season, Sullivan was the 2001 Division III all-purpose yards
champion. Sullivan has picked up where he left off the 2001 campaign
by averaging 148.7 yards rushing and 225.3 all-purpose yards per game.
Sullivan is currently on a stretch of eight-straight 100-yard rushing
games, a mark which ties the school record. In addition, Sullivan
just needs 650 rushing yards and 331 all-purpose yards to become the
W&L career leader in both categories. He is a First Team Preseason
All-America selection as an all-purpose runner by Lindy's College
Football Preview Magazine.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Junior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. For his career, Dean claims 1,840 yards passing with
13 touchdowns on the football field. On the mound, Dean earned First
Team All-ODAC honors last season after posting a 6-3 overall record
and a 2.12 ERA. Through two seasons, Dean is 12-3 with a 2.45 ERA.
His career ERA is the lowest in W&L history.
STERLING STAVISH:
Senior linebacker Matt Stavish, a native of Sterling, Va., has been
putting forth a sterling effort for the 2002 season. Thus far, Stavish
leads the ODAC in tackles (9.7 tpg.) and sacks (1.33 spg.) per game.
A starter for the third-straight season, Stavish has posted 190 tackles
(26 for a loss), five sacks and six interceptions for his career.
ON THE SUBJECT:
On the subject of defensive prowess, junior defensive back Ted Maffitt
is also having an outstanding start to the 2002 campaign. Maffitt
leads the ODAC with four interceptions in just three games. At Centre
on Saturday, Maffitt had a career day, posting 15 tackles, a sack,
a fumble recovery and an interception. In just 10 games as a starter
at defensive back, Maffitt claims nine career interceptions.
TURNOVER TALLY:
One of W&L's strengths over the last five years has been turnover
margin. During that span, the Generals have forced 117 turnovers (2.7
per game) while committing just 72 turnovers (1.7 per game) themselves.
W&L surrendered only 16 turnovers in 2001, forcing 26 miscues
by its opponents, including 18 interceptions. W&L has forced 11
turnovers in just three games this season, an average of 3.7 turnovers
per game.
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE:
Though the Generals claim 117 turnovers since the beginning of the
1998 season, they have only scored one defensive touchown during that
span. In fact, W&L has gone 34 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown.
COFFIN CORNER:
Junior punter/placekicker Whit Whitfield has been doing his part to
pin the Generals' opponents deep this season. Whitfield has mastered
the coffin corner kick and already claims seven kicks downed inside
the opponents' 20-yard line. Whitfield has accomplished this with
just three touchbacks.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent memory,
including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one and a
19-13 loss to Centre last week. All told, W&L has lost 11 games
by seven points or less since the beginning of the 1998 season.
