Hampden-Sydney sophomore running back CW Clemmons produced a 67-yard
touchdown run on the team's second play from scrimmage and the Tigers
never looked back in claiming a 44-13 win over Washington and Lee
at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon. Leading 21-0 at the half, the
Tigers scored two more touchdowns and kicked a field goal in the third
quarter for a 38-0 lead. The Generals scored two fourth quarter touchdowns

back Chris Sullivan rushed 19 times for 55 yards. He also caught five
passes for 55 yards and returned two kickoffs for 37 yards. Sophomore
linebacker Lloyd Wilson led the W&L defense with 12 tackles and
a half sack.
THE LAST MEETING WITH SEWANEE:
(W&L 28, UOS 24; October 20, 2001 - Sewanee, Tenn.)
Washington and Lee running back Chris Sullivan scored on a 23-yard
run with 5:50 remaining to give the Generals a 28-24 come-from-behind
victory at Sewanee. Sewanee jumped on the board with 4:24 to play
in the first quarter as Dale Williams hauled in a 15-yard touchdown
pass from quarterback Kirk Holtgrewe. The Tigers used a 33-yard field
goal by Ben Tuck and a 10-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown
by Nate Murphy to extend its lead to 17-0 with 8:28 to play in the
first half. The Generals cut the lead to 17-7 with 4:45 to play in
the first half as Sullivan scored his first of three touchdowns on
the afternoon on a 2-yard scamper. The score would remain 17-7 in
favor of Sewanee at halftime. W&L sliced the Tiger lead to 17-14
with 4:45 to play in the third quarter as senior running back Marc
Watson plunged into the end zone from 1-yard out. The Generals went
ahead for the first time in the game just seven seconds into the fourth
quarter as Sullivan scored on a 6-yard run. Sewanee regained a 24-21
lead as Holtgrewe found the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback keeper.
That set the stage for Sullivans game-winning touchdown run.
Sullivan led the Generals with 147 rushing yards on 39 carries. Watson
toted the ball 14 times and gained a season-high 120 yards, while
senior linebacker Jeff Bahl led the W&L defense by recording 10
tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. The Tigers were led by Holtgrewe
who completed 12-of-28 passes for 145 yards, one touchdown and two
interceptions. Williams caught six passes for 100 yards. Charles McCauley
led the Tiger defense with 12 stops.
SCOUTING SEWANEE:
Sewanee is 4-3 overall and is coming off a 36-31 win over Rhodes
on Saturday afternoon in Sewanee, Tenn. The Tigers trailed 31-24 with
9:45 remaining in the game, but sophomore defensive back Nate Murphy
scored a pair of touchdowns on blocked punt returns in the final four
minutes to give the Tigers the win. Murphy also scored on a 15-yard
blocked punt return in the first quarter to give him three punt returns
for touchdowns. All three punts were blocked by sophomore wide receiver
Don Rodgers, tying the national record. Senior quarterback Kirk Holtgrewe
completed 27-of-45 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns, while
sophomore wide receiver Dale Williams caught 10 passes for 122 yards
and one score. Freshman defensive back Will Smith led the Tiger defense
with 10 tackles. On the season, Holtgrewe has completed 54.4 percent
of his passes for 1,605 yards and 14 touchdowns. Williams has caught
43 passes for 719 yards and six touchdowns, while Rodgers has caught
37 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Junior linebacker Luqman
Salam leads the defense with 47 tackles.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION:
Sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham has been a pleasant surprise
this season. Callaham leads the team in touchdowns (6), receptions
(21) and receiving yards (295). His six touchdowns receiving are just
two shy of the W&L single-season record held by Bruce Green since
the 1969 season. Callaham caught nine passes for 73 yards last season.
CLOSE SERIES:
Washington and Lee and Sewanee have met 51 times over the years
and the series has seen its share of close games. In all, 25 of the
51 games have been determined by a touchdown or less. The Generals
have won each of the last four meetings, but all of them have been
close. In those four games, the average margin of victory is just
three points with the largest margin of victory (28-24) coming last
season.
MOVIN' ON UP:
Senior running back Chris Sullivan continues to move up the W&L
career record charts. Sullivan has set a new standard for career all-purpose
yards (5,285), eclipsing the record of 5,184 set by Marc Watson last
season. Sullivan is also 449 yards away from breaking Watson's school
career rushing record (3,112). Sullivan currently leads the ODAC in
rushing (107.8 ypg.) and all-purpose yards (184.5 ypg.).
QUARTERBACK CAROUSEL:
The 2002 season has featured a quarterbacking carousel. Junior
Peter Dean began the season as the starter and performed as such until
suffering a knee injury against Randolph-Macon. Junior Sean McGarvey
got the starting nod in the Generals' following game at Catholic,
but was relieved by freshman Greg Tweardy, who threw for 177 yards
and two touchdowns. Tweardy started on Saturday against Hampden-Sydney,
but was relieved by McGarvey, who threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns.
A game time decision will determine the starter for this week. Dean
may return from his knee injury for the Generals' game with Emory
& Henry on Nov. 9.
WELCOME BACK:
Senior tight end Jay Thomas has been hampered by injuries in the
early going, but appears to be back on track. Thomas had a breakout
game against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, catching four passes for
80 yards and two touchdowns. Thus far, Thomas has caught nine passes
for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He earned First Team Academic All-America
honors last season after catching 38 passes for 575 yards and six
touchdowns.
THE INTERCEPTOR:
Junior defensive back Ted Maffitt is having an outstanding 2002
campaign. Maffitt is tied for the ODAC-lead in interceptions (4) and
is tied for second in the league in tackles per game (9.8). In just
13 games as a starter at defensive back, Maffitt claims nine career
interceptions.
FIRST HALF WOES:
W&L has had its share of problems in the first half of games
this season. The Generals have scored just 18 first-half points, while
giving up 57 points. The second quarter has been particularly troublesome
with W&L being outscored 40-9.
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE:
The Generals' defense has forced 122 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 36 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heart-breaking defeats in recent
memory, including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one.
All told, W&L has lost 11 games by seven points or less since
the beginning of the 1998 season.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 417-465-39 (.474) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
