THE SERIES:
W&L and Bridgewater will be meeting for the 35th time, with the
Generals holding a 22-12 advantage in the series which began during
the 1964 season. The Eagles have taken each of the past four
contests, including a 28-3 win last season at Wilson Field. W&L
has not recorded a win over the Eagles at Jopson Field since a 20-12
triumph during the 1998 season. However, two of the last five
games between these two teams have gone to overtime. Each team has
one win in the overtime contests.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his 10th season as the
head coach at W&L and his 36th year of coaching. He claims a 45-50-1
(.474) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories at
W&L and needs four more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second
place. He is 5-4 all-time against Bridgewater. The Eagles are led
by ninth-year Head Coach Mike Clark (Cincinnati '79), who is 62-45-1
(.579) overall at Bridgewater. Clark's teams have gone 50-6 overall
since the 2000 season and have claimed the last three ODAC Championships
Clark is 4-5 all-time against the Generals.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 427-476-39 (.474) all-time record. The Generals
have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played
in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
(W&L 41, GC 14; October 23, 2004 - Lexington, Va.)
Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward totaled 203 all-purpose yards
and two touchdowns to propel the Washington and Lee football team
to a 41-14 win over Guilford. Ward caught seven passes for 61 yards
and a touchdown, rushed eight times for 34 yards and racked up 108
kick return yards, including an 86-yard touchdown return in the third
quarter. For Ward it was his second kick return for a touchdown in
the past two weeks, tying the W&L record for kickoff return touchdowns
for a season (2) and career (2). The Generals jumped out to a 14-0
first quarter lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore fullback
Ryan Sullivan and a 17-yard touchdown reception by sophomore wide
receiver Garrett LeRose. W&L added to its lead on a 2-yard touchdown
run by junior quarterback Greg Tweardy with 11:08 remaining in the
third quarter, but Guilford answered as sophomore running back Branden
Lindsey scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback
Chris Gammon to cut the lead to 20-7 with 7:20 remaining in the third
period. Ward then responded with his 86-yard kickoff return on the
ensuing kickoff and, sandwiched around a 1-yard touchdown reception
by GC sophomore wide receiver Chris Barnette, caught a 22-yard touchdown
pass from Tweardy for a 34-14 lead. Sophomore running back Will Hatfield
capped the scoring on a 7-yard touchdown run with 4:17 remaining in
the game. Ward led the Generals offense, while Tweardy completed 17-of-26

and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham caught four
passes for 81 yards, including a 49-yard reception to set up the game's
opening score. Senior linebacker Lloyd Wilson paced the defense with
nine tackles and a sack. Guilford was led by Gammon, who completed
a career-high 17 passes (33 att.) for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
Freshman defensive back Bryan Cook led the defense with seven tackles
and an interception.
WHEN LAST WE MET:
(BC 28, W&L 3; November 1, 2003 - Lexington, Va.)
Bridgewater scored three second-half touchdowns to pull away for a
28-3 win over Washington and Lee at Wilson Field. The Eagles struck
on the game's opening possession as fullback Robert Matthews scored
on a 40-yard touchdown run. W&L climbed to within 7-3 with 7:49
remaining in the first half as placekicker Ben Long booted a school-record-tying
47-yard field goal and the teams went into the half with the Eagles
leading 7-3. Bridgewater began to pull away in the third quarter as
tailback Marcus Washington produced a 14-yard touchdown run with 10:14
remaining in the period. Tailback Winston Young put BC up 21-3 on

SCOUTING BRIDGEWATER:
Bridgewater is 5-2 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC following a 49-38 win
over Emory & Henry on Saturday. The Eagles jumped out to a 28-0
first quarter lead, hitting on four touchdown plays of 35 yards or
more. The Wasps pulled to within 35-17 with 10:27 remaining in the
third quarter, but BC scored two more touchdowns before the end of
the quarter for a 49-17 lead. E&H scored three fourth quarter
touchdowns, but could get no closer than 49-38. The Eagles racked
up 634 yards of total offense led by senior quarterback Brandon Wakefield,
who earned ODAC Offensive Player of the Week honors by hitting 14-of-19
passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns. Junior fullback Eric Spence
rushed for 119 yards and one touchdown on six carries, while junior
wide receiver Douglas Napier caught five passes for 99 yards and one
touchdown. Junior safety Brandon Mays paced the defense with eight
tackles and a sack. For the season, Wakefield has completed 54.4 percent
of his passes for 1,418 yards and 11 touchdowns with eight interceptions.
Sophomore running back Winston Young has rushed for a team-high 306
yards and five touchdowns on 59 carries, while junior running back
Marcus Washington (256 yds., 3 TD) and Spence (211 yds., 2 TD) have
also helped carry the load. Napier claims a team-high 22 catches for
441 yards and three touchdowns, and junior wide receiver Brian Awkard
has 15 receptions for 261 yards and three scores. He has also averaged
18.1 yards per punt return with one touchdown. Senior linebacker Brian
Neal lead the Eagles in tackles (50) and claims one sack.
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT -- ZERO:
The Generals defense has plenty to say about the word zero. More importantly,
the number 0. With a 22-0 victory over Catholic on Oct. 9, the Generals
produced their second straight shutout and third of the season. It
marked the first time that a W&L team had recorded back-to-back
shutouts since the 1982 season and also was the first time that W&L
had produced three shutouts in a season since the 1967 campaign. W&L
is allowing just 13.7 points per game and is outscoring ODAC opposition,
108-45, this season.
SACK PARTY:
W&L has posted 34 sacks this season, a total which has already
doubled that of last season. W&L has twice set a school record
for sacks in a game (9 vs. Sewanee, 10 vs. Macon), and has notched
no fewer than two sacks in a game this season. The W&L record
for sacks in a season is 35 set during the 1995 season. All told,
10 different players have gotten to the quarterback this season, led
by sophomore linebacker Robert Foster's eight sacks.
ODD STAT OF THE WEEK:
The W&L defense has recovered 10 fumbles this season which have
been scooped up by 10 different players. Junior safety Stuart Swann
returned his recovery 49 yards for a touchdown in the Generals' 17-0
win over Randolph-Macon on Oct. 2.
WILSON NAMED ODAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF WEEK:
Senior linebacker Lloyd Wilson has been named the ODAC Defensive Player
of the Week following his nine-tackle, one-sack performance against
Guilford. Wilson currently leads the ODAC in tackles per game (8.7)
and also claims four sacks. A three-year starter at linebacker, Wilson
has notched 258 tackles and nine sacks.
ON THE OFFENSIVE:
Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward has been carrying the Generals
offense the past three weeks. Over that span, he has totaled 24 receptions
for 257 yards and three touchdowns, 16 rushes for 76 yards and two
touchdowns, and returned seven kickoffs for 268 yards (38.3 avg.)
and two more scores. Ward's two kickoff returns for touchdown tied
the W&L season (2) and career records (2). Ward missed two games
early in the season after suffering an injury in the season-opener.
CLIMBING THE LADDER:
Senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham is capping a stellar career with
an outstanding senior season. Callaham is currently second in the
ODAC in receptions per game (5.43 rpg.) and ranks fifth in receiving
yards per game (64.7 ypg.). For his career, Callaham ranks sixth all-time
in receptions (111), seventh in receiving yards (1,406) and sixth
in receiving touchdowns (10).
SHOW ME THAT FOUR:
The Generals have loved seeing a four on the sideline down marker
this season. W&L has stopped its' opponents on fourth down 12
times this season (5-of-17), while the Generals' offense has converted
8-of-10 fourth downs.
SHOW ME THAT FOUR -- PART TWO:
A win in either of its final two ODAC contests would give W&L
its first four-win season in ODAC play since the 1985 season, the
last time that the Generals claimed an ODAC Championship. Two wins
in their final three games would give the Generals their first winning
season since 1995 (5-3-1) and the first six-win season since 1985.
SHARING THE PIGSKIN:
Junior quarterback Greg Tweardy has been spreading the pigskin around
this season as 13 different players have recorded at least one catch.
Additionally, six different players have caught 10 or more passes
led by senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham (38) and sophomore wide
receiver Colton Ward (26). The latest General to enter the receiving
column was sophomore wide receiver Daniel Hackett, who snared a 2-yard
pass against Guilford.
