THE SERIES:

the Wasps holding a 26-7 advantage in the all-time series which began
during the 1921 season. E&H won 19 straight games in the
series before the string was snapped with a 22-9 W&L win during
the 2002 season. The Wasps responded with a 34-16 win last season
in Emory, Va.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his 10th season as the
head coach at W&L and his 36th year of coaching. He claims a 45-51-1
(.469) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories at
W&L and needs four more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second
place. He is 1-8 all-time against Emory & Henry. The Wasps are
led by 23rd-year Head Coach Lou Wacker (Richmond '58), who is 163-75
(.685) overall. Wacker is 20-2 all-time against the Generals and had
led E&H to 11 ODAC titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances
in his tenure.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 427-477-39 (.474) all-time record. The Generals
have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played
in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
(BC 34, W&L 7; October 30, 2004 - Bridgewater, Va.)
Sophomore tailback Winston Young rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns
on 14 carries to lead Bridgewater past Washington and Lee, 34-7, in
ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Jopson Field. A pair
of Young touchdown runs sandwiched around a 60-yard scoring strike
from senior quarterback Brandon Wakefield to sophomore wide receiver
Blake Warring gave the Eagles a 21-0 lead that they carried into the
half. The Eagles extended their lead to 34-0 on a pair of Wakefield
touchdown passes, before the Generals got on the board with a 14-yard
touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Hunter Dawkins to freshman
wide receiver Jack Martin with 1:56 remaining in the game. W&L
racked up 322 yards of total offense in the game, but could not offset
three turnovers and four failed fourth down conversions in Bridgewater
territory. Junior quarterback Greg Tweardy completed 26-of-39 passes
for 219 yards for W&L, but was picked off three times. Dawkins
completed 6-of-9 passes for 55 yards and one score, while sophomore
wide receiver Colton Ward caught 11 passes for 85 yards and rushed
five times for 13 yards. Martin hauled in seven passes for 83 yards
and a touchdown. Senior defensive lineman Chris Caramore led the W&L
defense with eight tackles. Bridgewater was led by Young's rushing
effort. Wakefield completed 14-of-28 passes for 251 yards and three
touchdowns, while junior defensive back Adrian Herndon and senior
linebacker Cameron Garvin each posted seven tackles.
WHEN LAST WE MET:
(E&H 34, W&L 16; November 8, 2003 - Emory, Va.)
Emory & Henry scored 34 unanswered points to down Washington and
Lee, 34-16. The Generals opened the scoring at 8:23 of the first quarter
on a 37-yard field goal by placekicker Ben Long. Emory & Henry
responded with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter as quarterback
Todd Woods connected with wide receiver Jerad Jackson for a 44-yard
touchdown pass. Running back Chris Miller pushed the home teams
lead to 20-3 by halftime with a pair of touchdown runs in the second
quarter, and returned after the break for his third touchdown at 4:26
of the third quarter. Woods capped off the Wasps scoring at 2:47 in
the third when he connected with wide receiver Brennan Stewart for
a 16-yard touchdown pass. The Generals narrowed the Emory & Henry
lead to 34-10 in the fourth quarter as senior quarterback Peter Dean
threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to running back Michael Lackett with
11:42 remaining. Quarterback Greg Tweardy finished the games
scoring with W&Ls final touchdown, an 11-yard pass to wide
receiver John Barnwell with 4:18 left in the contest. Tweardy led
the Generals offense, completing 11-of-21 passes for 142 yards
and one touchdown. Linebacker Lloyd Wilson led the W&L defense
with 13 tackles. Woods completed 15-of-22 passes for 247 yards and
two touchdowns for Emory & Henry, while Miller carried 37 times
for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Linebacker Anthony Boyd paced
the Wasps defense with 10 tackles.
SCOUTING EMORY & HENRY:
Emory & Henry is 3-5 overall, 2-2 in the ODAC following a 42-13
win over Catholic on Saturday afternoon in Emory, Va. The Wasps led
just 21-7 late in the third quarter, but a pair of touchdown runs
(21 yds., 4 yds.) by senior running back Chris Miller and a 31-yard
touchdown reception by sophomore wide receiver Jared Jackson stretched
the E&H lead to 42-7 with 6:54 remaining in the game. Miller ran
for a third touchdown (30 yds.) early in the game and freshman wide
receiver Brennan Stewart hauled in two touchdown passes over the second
and third quarters. Sophomore quarterback Todd Woods completed 25-of-40
passes for 363 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Miller rushed
for 126 yards and three scores on 20 carries. Jackson hauled in nine
passes for 123 yards and one touchdown, while freshman wide-out CJ
Johnson caught seven balls for 124 yards. Stewart had four catches
for 83 yards and the two touchdowns, while sophomore linebacker Marshall
Doss led the defense with 10 tackles. All told, the Wasps racked up
547 yards of total offense against the Cardinals. For the season,
Emory & Henry averages 414.1 yards of total offense, but is allowing
402.6 yards per game. The offense is led by Woods, last season's ODAC
Rookie of the Year. He has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for
2,405 yards and 20 touchdowns with just nine interceptions. Miller
has rushed for 612 yards and 10 touchdowns on 129 carries, while Jackson
has caught a league-best 52 passes for 759 yards and seven touchdowns.
Stewart has snared 39 passes for 565 yards and 10 touchdowns and senior
tight end Brett Kickliter has 36 catches for 459 yards and four scores.
Defensively, E&H is led by Doss, who claims 63 tackles and 1.5
sacks. Senior defensive tackle Jeremy Hagee has 41 stops and ranks
among the league leaders in sacks (5.0).
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT -- ZERO:
The Generals defense has plenty to say about the word zero. More importantly,
the number 0. With a 22-0 victory over Catholic on Oct. 9, the Generals
produced their second straight shutout and third of the season. It
marked the first time that a W&L team had recorded back-to-back
shutouts since the 1982 season and also was the first time that W&L
had produced three shutouts in a season since the 1967 campaign. W&L
is allowing just 16.2 points per game and is outscoring ODAC opposition,
115-79, this season.
SACK PARTY:
W&L has posted 34 sacks this season, a total which has already
doubled that of last season. W&L has twice set a school record
for sacks in a game with nine against Sewanee and 10 against Randolph-Macon.
The W&L record for sacks in a season is 35 set during the 1995
season. All told, 10 different players have gotten to the quarterback
this season, led by sophomore linebacker Robert Foster's eight sacks.
ODD STAT OF THE YEAR:
The W&L defense has recovered 10 fumbles this season which have
been scooped up by 10 different players. Junior safety Stuart Swann
returned his recovery 49 yards for a touchdown in the Generals' 17-0
win over Randolph-Macon on Oct. 2.
ON THE BANKS:
Junior punter Donny Banks has had a fine season for the Generals after
walking on to the team prior to the season. Banks is averaging 36.6
yards per punt and has pinned the opponent inside its 20-yardline
on 19 occasions with just two touchbacks. Banks' ability to hit the
coffin corner and keep the ball away from the opposing returner has
W&L ranked third in the ODAC in net punting (32.8 ypp.).
WILSON LEADS THE ODAC:
A three-year starter, senior linebacker Lloyd Wilson has tallied 264
career tackles and nine sacks during his career. Wilson is capping
his career with another fine season as he leads the ODAC in tackles
(67) and tackles per game (8.4) this season.
ON THE OFFENSIVE:
Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward has been carrying the Generals
offense the past four weeks. Over that span, he has totaled 35 receptions
for 342 yards and three touchdowns, 21 rushes for 89 yards and two
touchdowns, and returned eight kickoffs for 295 yards (36.9 avg.)
and two more scores. Ward's two kickoff returns for touchdown tied
the W&L season (2) and career records (2). Ward missed two games
early in the season after suffering an injury in the season-opener.
With the game against Bridgewater, Ward now qualifies for minimum
games played and ranks first in the ODAC in kick return average (29.6
ypr.) and second in receptions per game (6.17 rpg.) and all-purpose
yards (138.7 ypg.).
CLIMBING THE LADDER:
Senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham is capping a stellar career with
an outstanding senior season. Callaham is currently fourth in the
ODAC in receptions per game (5.00 rpg.) and ranks seventh in receiving
yards per game (58.5 ypg.). For his career, Callaham ranks sixth all-time
in receptions (113), seventh in receiving yards (1,421) and sixth
in receiving touchdowns (10).
SCORE FOR FOUR:
A win over Emory & Henry would give W&L its first four-win
season in ODAC play since the 1985 campaign, the last time that the
Generals claimed an ODAC Championship. Wins over Emory & Henry
and Greensboro would give the Generals their first winning season
since 1995 (5-3-1) and the first six-win season since 1985.
SHARING THE PIGSKIN:
Junior quarterback Greg Tweardy has been spreading the pigskin around
this season as 14 different players have recorded at least one catch.
Additionally, six different players have caught 10 or more passes
led by senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham (40) and sophomore wide
receiver Colton Ward (37). The latest General to enter the receiving
column was sophomore running back Will Hatfield, who snared a 1-yard
pass against Bridgewater.
