THE SERIES:
W&L and Sewanee will be meeting for the 54th time, with the Generals holding a 31-22 advantage in the all-time series which began during the 1892 season.  The two teams have met every season since 1955, tieing for the oldest continuous series in W&L history (Centre, Hampden-Sydney). W&L has won five of the last six meetings; however, the Tigers won last season's encounter by a 37-13 count in Sewanee, Tenn. The Tigers have struggled in Lexington, having lost each of the last eight meetings in Lexington dating back to 1986. Overall, W&L is 22-5 against Sewanee at home.

THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his 10th season as the head coach at W&L and his 36th year of coaching. He claims a 41-48-1 (.461) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories at W&L and needs eight more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second place. The Tigers are led by led by ninth-year Head Coach John Windham (Vanderbilt '86). Windham is 36-40 (.474) overall at Sewanee and just 2-6 overall against Washington and Lee.

ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 423-474-39 (.473) all-time record. The Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.

LAST TIME OUT:
(AU 23, W&L 8; September 11, 2004 - Alfred, N.Y.)

The Washington and Lee football team held Alfred University to just 274 yards of total offense, but gained just 155 yards itself in falling to the Saxons, 23-8, on Saturday afternoon in Alfred, N.Y. The Generals (0-1) got on the board first when an Alfred punt snap went out of the back of the end zone with 12:32 remaining in the first quarter. W&L held the lead until Alfred's Chris Reynolds nailed a 30-yard field goal to make the score 3-2 with 4:38 remaining in the opening period. Reynolds booted two more field goals in the second quarter, one of 26 yards and another from 31 yards to give the Saxons (1-0) a 9-2 halftime edge. After a scoreless third quarter, the Saxons scored the game's first touchdown as Chaz Bruce scored on a 31-yard run with 14:30 remaining. Bruce then improved the lead to 23-2 on a 40-yard touchdown run with 7:03 remaining, before the Generals answered on a 12-yard touchdown strike from junior quarterback Greg Tweardy to junior wide receiver Clark Kensinger with 1:42 remaining. The PAT attempt failed producing the final score. W&L was led by Tweardy, who completed 17-of-41 passes for 155 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham caught six passes for 75 yards, while junior running back Michael Lackett carried 20 times for 33 yards. Senior linebacker Lloyd Wilson led the defense with nine tackles. Sophomore linebacker Robert Foster notched four tackles, a sack and an interception. Alfred was led by Bruce's 86 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Quarterback Ron Duliba completed 16-of-35 passes for 185 yards and one interception.

WHEN LAST WE MET:
(UOS 37, W&L 13; September 20, 2003 - Sewanee, Tenn.)

Sewanee quarterback Wes Satterfield rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns and completed 10-of-15 passes for 91 yards in leading the Tigers to a 37-13 win over Washington and Lee. The game’s momentum swung as the Generals recovered a fumble on the Sewanee 4-yard line with 51 seconds remaining in the second quarter and trailing 16-6.  After a pair of rushes for two yards, Sewanee cornerback Mike Glanton picked off a pass from W&L senior quarterback Peter Dean and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown and the Tigers took a 23-6 halftime edge. The Generals (0-2) climbed back to 23-13 on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dean to wide receiver Clark Kensinger with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter, but a pair of Satterfield touchdown runs, one with 1:57 remaining in the third period, and another with 7:30 remaining in the fourth, salted the game away. Dean led the Generals’ offense, completing 10-of-18 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, and rushing six times for 12 yards and another score.  Running back Richard Garland carried 25 times for 38 yards, while wide receiver Taylor Callaham caught three passes for 53 yards.  Linebacker Lloyd Wilson led the Generals’ defense with 12 tackles. Senior running back Justin Askew supplemented Satterfield’s day with 41 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

SCOUTING SEWANEE:
Sewanee is 1-1 following a 28-17 win over Huntingdon on Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala. The Tigers trailed 17-7 at the half, but scored 21 unanswered points in the second half for their first victory of the season. The comeback began with a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown by sophomore cornerback A.J. Jackson. Senior running back Phillip Suggs then scored on a 75-yard run and a 6-yard run to provide Sewanee with the win. Suggs led the Tigers' offense with 190 yards and the two touchdowns on 32 carries. Sophomore quarterback Wes Satterfield completed 14-of-18 passes for 121 yards and rushed for a 17-yard touchdown as well. Defensively, Jackson had two interceptions, while senior defensive end Kola Pacheco totaled six tackles. On the season, Suggs has rushed 50 times for 273 yards and three touchdowns, while Satterfield has completed 28-of-40 passes for 221 yards. However, he has been picked off three times. Freshman wide receiver Patrick Scott has been Satterfield's favorite target, catching seven passes for 39 yards. The Tigers already claim two interception returns for touchdowns, the one by Jackson against Huntingdon, and a 51-yard interception return by junior cornerback Mike Glanton against Hampden-Sydney in the first week of the season. Senior linebacker Clarence Mitchell and junior safety Will Smith lead the defense with 10 tackles each through the first two weeks of the season.

PLEASANT SURPRISE:
Junior punter Donny Banks has been a pleasant surprise for the Generals thus far. A first-year player, Banks punted 13 times against Alfred, averaging 38.1 yards per punt with a long of 66 yards. He also pinned four punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line. Banks' 13 punts were just two from the school record, while his 66-yarder was just 10 yards from a school record. Incidently, the W&L record for punting average in a season in 41.3 yards per punt.

ISN'T IT GRAND?:
Senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham led the Generals' offense against Alfred, catching six passes for 75 yards. In the process, Callaham went over 1,000 receiving yards for his career. Callaham has caught 79 passes for 1,028 yards and eight touchdowns over the course of his career. He can move into the Top 10 all-time at W&L with 192 yards.

STREAKS:
Junior quarterback Greg Tweardy tossed his first interception since the 2002 season in the Generals' loss at Alfred on Saturday. Tweardy had attempted 118 passes since his last interception, thrown in a loss to Hampden-Sydney on Oct. 19, 2002.

The Washington and Lee defense recorded two interceptions in the season-opener against Alfred. Dating back to a 31-27 win over Catholic last Oct. 11, W&L has recorded at least one interception in seven straight games.

ON THE GROUND:
The W&L rushing attack was held to -12 yards on 30 carries during Saturday's loss to Alfred. That marked the first time that W&L had been held to negative yardage on the ground since Catholic held the Generals to -6 yards on 30 carries in a 47-0 loss to the Cardinals on Oct. 7, 2000.

EAST, DRINK, AND BE MURRAY:
The Generals certainly have reason to be celebrating the play of junior defensive end Liam Murray following his performance against Alfred. Murray totaled eight tackles, including three stops for a loss of 37 yards in the contest. He also tallied one sack. Since receiving regular playing time midway through last season, Murray has averaged 6.8 tackles and totaled a pair of sacks.

MAKE A NOTE:
The Generals surrendered seven sacks in the opening loss to Alfred and have begun to take measures to sure up the offensive line. Sophomore tight end Hunter Whitfield has been moved to the line and will get the starting nod at left guard this week against Sewanee.

CENTURY TIMES TWO:
Senior linebacker Lloyd Wilson tallied a team-high nine tackles against Alfred on Saturday, bringing his career tackles total to 206. Wilson has notched 92 and 88 tackles, respectively, during the last two seasons.

DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 158 turnovers since the beginning of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during that span. In fact, W&L has gone 52 straight games without scoring a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the 1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a score since Jon Wagner did so against Davidson during the 1992 season.

OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heartbreaking defeats in recent memory. All told, W&L has lost 12 games by seven points or less since the beginning of the 1998 season.
