THE SERIES:

the Tigers holding a 31-29-2 advantage in the all-time series which
began during the 1899 season. HSC has won each of the past two
meetings, including a 45-17 victory last season in Hampden-Sydney,
Va. W&L and Sydney have met every season since 1955, tying for
the longest current continuous rivalry at W&L (Centre and Sewanee).
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his 10th season as the
head coach at W&L and his 36th year of coaching. He claims a 44-49-1
(.473) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories at
W&L and needs five more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second
place. He is 6-3 all-time against Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers are led
by fifth-year Head Coach Marty Favret (Catholic '84), who is 30-15
(.667) overall. After starting his career with a 4-6 and a 5-5 season,
Favret has led the Tigers to a 21-4 mark over the last three seasons.
He is 2-2 all-time against Washington and Lee.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 426-475-39 (.474) all-time record. The Generals
have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played
in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
(W&L 22, CUA 0; October 9, 2004 - Washington, D.C.)
Washington and Lee recorded its second straight shutout with a 22-0
win over Catholic on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. It was
the first time since 1982 that the Generals have posted back-to-back
shutouts. The Generals took a 3-0 lead on a 42-yard field goal by
sophomore placekicker Ben Long with 8:44 remaining in the first quarter.
Long then connected from 26 yards out with 12:14 left in the second
quarter to give W&L a 6-0 lead which it would take into halftime.
After halftime, the Generals broke the game open by scoring 16 points
in the third quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward started
the scoring spree on a 19-yard touchdown run with 8:43 left in the
quarter. Ward would finish the game with four carries for 35 yards
and a touchdown. He also caught a career-high 11 passes for 84 yards.
W&L extended its advantage to 16-0 with 4:35 remaining in the
quarter on a 24-yard field goal by Long. Catholic fumbled the ensuing
kickoff and, on the very next play, W&L junior running back Michael
Lackett hit senior wide receiver John Barnwell on a 29-yard strike
to give the Generals a 22-0 lead. The two-point conversion failed
producing the final score. The W&L defense recorded five sacks
and held the Cardinals to just 116 yards of total offense. Offensively,
W&L was led by junior quarterback Greg Tweardy, who completed
27-of-42 passes for 246 yards. Lackett rushed 17 times for 51 yards
and senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham caught eight balls for 115
yards. Freshman defensive back Kyle Luby notched a team-high 11 tackles
and junior defensive end Liam Murray had eight tackles. Catholic was
paced by running back Ed Smith, who rushed for 54 yards on 15 carries.

and wide receiver Frank Lynch caught six passes for 65 yards.

Washington and Lee, 45-17. The Tigers broke open a 3-3 game with three
touchdowns in a span of 7:05, including a 98-yard touchdown pass from
senior wide receiver Conrad Singh to wide receiver Tripp Murchison

SCOUTING HAMPDEN-SYDNEY:
Hampden-Sydney is 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC following a 52-21 win
over Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers jumped out
to a 17-7 lead on a pair of touchdown runs and a field goal, but saw
the Wasps score two touchdowns in the final 8:54 of the half to trail
E&H 21-17 at the half. H-SC opened the second half scoring with
a 98-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback J.D. Ricca to freshman
wide receiver Drew Smith and it was all Sydney the rest of the way
as they went on the score four more touchdowns. The Tigers were led
by senior running back CW Clemmons, who rushed for 152 yards and one
touchdown on 17 carries. He also caught three passes for 10 yards
and another score. Ricca completed 18-of-26 passes for 278 yards and

linebacker Ty LaFlame paced the Tiger defense with eight tackles each.
Hall had an interception, while LaFlame added a sack. For the season,
the Tigers are averaging 498.8 yards and 47.2 points per game and
are led by Ricca, who has completed 62.5 percent of his passes for

the ODAC with 44 tackles. He also claims three sacks. Senior defensive
end Mike Clark has posted 30 tackles and a team-best four sacks.
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT -- ZERO:
The Generals defense has plenty to say about the word zero. More importantly,
the number 0. With a 22-0 victory over Catholic on Saturday, the Generals
produced their second straight shutout and third of the season. It
marked the first time that a W&L team has recorded back-to-back
shutouts since the 1982 season and also was the first time that W&L
has produced three shutouts in a season since the 1967 campaign. W&L
is allowing just 10.2 points per game and is outscoring ODAC opposition,
39-0, this season.
ON THE DEFENSIVE:
In addition to its three shutouts, there are many more impressive
numbers associated with the Generals' defense. W&L leads the ODAC
in scoring defense (10.2 ppg.), rushing defense (38.4 ypg.), total
defense (220.2 ypg.), sacks (6.0 spg.), opponent first downs (63)
and fourth down conversions (1-9, 11.1%). W&L ranks nationally
in the first three catagories.
SACK PARTY:
W&L has posted 30 sacks this season, a total which has already
doubled that of last season. W&L has twice set a school record
for sacks in a game (9 vs. Sewanee, 10 vs. Macon), and has notched
no fewer than three sacks in a game this season. The W&L record
for sacks in a season is 35 set during the 1995 season. All told,
nine different players have gotten to the quarterback this season,
led by sophomore linebacker Robert Foster's eight sacks.
FOSTERING ATTENTION:
Sophomore linebacker Robert Foster has been fostering plenty of attention
with his play this season. Not yet a full-time starter at outside
linebacker, Foster has been having a monster season highlighted by
his play against Macon when he totaled eight tackles, a school-record
tying five sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. For the
season, Foster has tallied 20 tackles, eight sacks, two interceptions,
two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
EAT, DRINK AND BE MURRAY:
Junior Liam Murray is having a stellar junior season playing the defensive
end position. Murray is currently tied for second in the ODAC in tackles
per game (8.6) and is third in tackles for loss per game (2.00). Murray
has also totaled three sacks on the season.
ON THE OFFENSIVE:
Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward had a breakout game on Saturday
at Catholic when he totaled 135 all-purpose yards en route to ODAC
Offensive Player of the Week accolades. Ward caught a career and ODAC-high
11 passes for 84 yards, rushed four times for 34 yards and a touchdown,
and returned a kickoff for 17 yards. Ward scored the Generals' first
touchdown against the Cardinals with a 19-yard run on fourth-and-one.
CLIMBING THE LADDER:
Senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham is capping a stellar career with
an outstanding senior season. Callaham currently leads the ODAC in
receptions per game (6.20 rpg.) and ranks third in receiving yards
per game (71.6 ypg.). Following his eight-catch, 115-yard performance
at Catholic on Saturday, Callaham has moved into several Top 10 categories
at W&L. He now ranks eighth all-time in receptions (104), ninth
in receiving yards (1,311) and sixth in receiving touchdowns (10).
SHOW ME THAT FOUR:
The Generals have loved seeing a four on the sideline down marker
this season. W&L has stopped its' opponents on fourth down eight
times this season (1-of-9), while the Generals' offense has converted
5-of-7 fourth downs.
PLEASANT SURPRISE:
Junior punter Donny Banks has been a pleasant surprise for the Generals
thus far. A first-year player, Banks is averaging 36.7 yards over
43 punts this season. He has also pinned the opponent inside their
20-yard line 17 times, already eclipsing the total from all of last
season. He ranks third in the ODAC in net punting (33.0 ypp.) and
claims the two longest punts in the ODAC this season -- boots of 66
and 65 yards.
