THE SERIES:
Washington and Lee and Sewanee will be meeting for the 56th time with the Generals holding a 33-22 advantage in the all-time series, which began during the 1939 season. W&L has won seven of the last eight meetings, including a 10-7 win last season in Sewanee, Tenn. The Generals are also 23-5 all-time against the Tigers in Lexington and haven't lost to Sewanee at home since the 1986 season.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his 12th season as the head coach at W&L and his 38th year of coaching. He claims a 54-55-1 (.496) overall record and ranks second all-time at W&L in career victories. Sewanee is led by 11th-year Head Coach John Windham (Vanderbilt '86), who carries a 44-54 (.449) career record.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 438-482-39 (.477) all-time record. The Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI, though the University officially recognized football as a varsity sport beginning in 1890.

Franklin & Marshall jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and controlled the ball for 42:21 of the game's 60 minutes in defeating Washington and Lee, 21-7, on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Pa. The Diplomats dented the scoreboard early in the first quarter when Rob Donofrio caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Turner at 10:37. Turner followed that score with a 5-yard keeper, entering the end zone at 4:12 of the first quarter. F&M notched its final points of the contest at 1:19 of the third quarter when Matt Mondonedo caught a nine-yard reception from Turner for a touchdown. The Generals responded with their only score of the contest at 5:11 of the fourth quarter when senior quarterback Hunter Dawkins hooked up with senior wide receiver D.J. Hackett for a 19-yard touchdown reception. W&L was limited to just 128 yards of total offense, while the Diplomats managed 310 yards, 185 of which came on their final three drives of the game. W&L was paced by Dawkins who went 11-of-20 for 59 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Stuart Sitterson gained 47 yards on 16 carries, while junior wide receiver Jack Martin caught three passes for 22 yards. Junior linebacker Bryant Fulk registered 12 tackles and one sack, while junior linebacker Ryan MacPhee also notched 12 tackles for the Generals.
WHEN WE LAST MET:

The Washington and Lee football team controlled the ball for nearly 37 minutes in defeating Sewanee, 10-7, at McGee Field in Sewanee, Tenn. The Generals opened the scoring with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter as placekicker Ben Long booted a 21-yard field goal. The Tigers responded with a 7-yard touchdown run by running back Blake Mears with 4:22 remaining in the half, but W&L would again take the lead on a 2-yard touchdown strike from senior quarterback Greg Tweardy to wide receiver Jack Martin with 33 seconds remaining in the half. W&L had several scoring opportunities in the second half, but Tweardy was intercepted in the end zone on first-and-goal from the three yardline early in the third quarter and Long had a 37-yard field goal blocked with 14:05 remaining in the game. However, the Generals’ defense would make the three-point lead hold up, allowing the Tigers just 154 yards of total offense on the day. Tweardy completed 20-of-32 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown, while Martin caught six passes for 64 yards and the one score. Wide receiver Colton Ward totaled 100 yards rushing and receiving, while running back Jordan Campbell carried 18 times for 59 yards. Defensive end Walker Williams led the defense with seven tackles and a forced fumble. Sewanee was led by Mears, who rushed 10 times for 46 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Chris Murphy rushed for 44 yards on 14 carries and completed 8-of-18 passes for 57 yards. Linebacker Will Smith paced the defense with 12 tackles and the block of Long’s field goal attempt.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME:
Since the beginning of the 2000 season, W&L is 5-1 in its' first home game of the season. Additionally, the Generals have not lost to Sewanee at Wilson Field since dropping a 14-7 decision to the Tigers on Oct. 25, 1986. Futhermore, three of the nine straight home victories over Sewanee have been by shutout, including the last meeting on Sept. 8, 2004 (W&L 12, UOS 0).
SCOUTING SEWANEE:
Sewanee is 1-1 overall following a 44-24 loss at Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but surrendered 23 second quarter points and never recovered in falling to the Hawks. The Tigers gained 335 yards of total offense, but could not overcome four turnovers, one of which was returned 100 yards for a touchdown. Senior quarterback Wesley Satterfield led the offense by completing 18-of-34 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Junior fullback Blake Mears rushed for 63 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries, while senior wide receiver Jason Louden snared three passes for 64 yards. Senior safety George Twitty paced the defense with nine tackles, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. For the season, the Tigers are averaging 367.0 yards and 33.0 points per game. Satterfield has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns with just one interception. He has also rushed for 85 yards and two scores. Mears has spearheaded the run game with for 212 yards and four scores on 44 carries, while also catching six passes for 145 yards and one score. Defensively, freshman linebacker Louis Dawson has a team-best 15 tackles and a pair of sacks, while Twitty claims 14 total stops.
JACK BE NIMBLE, JACK BE QUICK:
Junior wide receiver Jack Martin will be looking to replicate the success he found last season when he caught 70 passes for a school-record 1,353 yards and a school-record 15 touchdowns. Martin had four 200-yard receiving efforts and caught 22 passes for 20 or more yards en route to finishing third in Division III in receiving yards per game (135.3 ypg). Martin has received Preseason All-America recognition by Street & Smith's, Lindy's, D3Football.com and Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Martin caught just three passes for 22 yards in the loss at F&M on Saturday.
ALL-PURPOSE BACKS:
Senior V-Back Colton Ward and sophomore running back Stuart Sitterson provide the Generals with an effective 1-2 punch on offense and in the return game. Ward is a Don Hansen Preseason Third Team All-America selection at wide receiver, while Sitterson earned various Preseason All-America team honors from Lindy's, D3Football.com and Don Hansen as a kick returner. Together, Ward and Sitterson helped W&L lead Division III in kick return average last season (29.4 ypr). They also accounted for 1,255 yards of total offense and 1,191 total return yards in 2005. On Saturday, the duo accounted for 72 of the Generals' 128 offensive yards.
CAREER DAYS:
Junior linebackers Bryant Fulk and Ryan MacPhee both had career-best efforts on Saturday at F&M. Both notched a career-high 12 tackles on the afternoon, with Fulk also tallying a sack. Junior cornerback Mark Snoddy also recorded his ninth career interception.
