THE SERIES:
W&L and Bridgewater will be meeting for the 34th time, with
the Generals holding a 22-11 all-time lead in the series which began
during the 1964 season. Following a string of seven consecutive
victories by the Generals from 1993-1999, the Eagles have put together
a series of three straight wins. Each of the last two games
between these foes on Wilson Field have ended in overtime. W&L
won 44-38 in 1999 and Bridgewater won 34-28 in 2001.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his ninth season as
the head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims
a 40-45-1 (.471) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories
at W&L and needs nine more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for
second place. He is 5-3 all-time against Bridgewater. The Eagles are
led by ninth-year Head Coach Mike Clark (Cincinnati '79), who is 51-42-1
(.548) overall at Bridgewater. He is 3-5 all-time against the Generals.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 422-471-39 (.474) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
Guilford College surged out to a 14-0 lead in the opening 5:46
of the game and extended its lead late for a 34-7 win over Washington
and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers
opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman running
back Micah Rushing 4:52 into the game, then extended to a 14-0 lead
on a 36-yard fumble return by junior cornerback Jason Allen just 54
seconds later. After a 37-yard field goal by GC freshman placekicker
Travis Frazier on the opening possession of the second half, the Generals
climbed to within 17-7 with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter
on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Peter Dean. However,
Guilford added a 2-yard touchdown reception by freshman tight end
CJ Graham, a 36-yard field goal by Frazier and a 20-yard fumble return
for a touchdown by freshman linebacker Mario Paylor in the fourth
period for the 27-point win. Dean led the Generals offense,
completing 17-of-35 passes for 201 yards. He was picked off
two times. Sophomore running back Michael Lackett rushed 21 times
for 80 yards, while junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham caught four
passes for 51 yards. Sophomore defensive lineman Liam Murray
led the W&L defense with a career-high 11 tackles, including two
for a loss. Junior quarterback Josh Smith paced the Quaker offense,
completing 6-of-13 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown and rushing
nine times for 46 yards. Senior running back Brian Caye added
77 yards on 19 carries. Paylor led the defense with nine tackles
and his fourth-quarter touchdown.
THE LAST MEETING:
(BC 44, W&L 14; November 2, 2002 - Bridgewater, Va.)
Washington and Lee committed seven turnovers which led to 28 Bridgewater
points in a 44-14 loss to the Eagles in Bridgewater, Va. The Generals
trailed just 24-14 entering the fourth quarter, but BC scored on each
of its final three possessions, including a 65-yard interception return
for a touchdown by Jared Brice with 1:47 remaining in the game. The
Eagles assumed a 17-0 lead with 11:14 remaining in the first half
before the Generals struck with a pair of touchdowns to cut the deficit
to 17-14 at the half. Senior running back Chris Sullivan scored on
a 1-yard run with 3:17 remaining in the half and again on a 36-yard
touchdown pass from quarterback Sean McGarvey with 13 seconds remaining.
Sullivan led the W&L offense with 84 yards and one touchdown on
21 carries. He also caught three passes for 39 yards and a score.
McGarvey completed 16-of-31 passes for 203 yards, but was intercepted
five times. The W&L defense held Bridgewater to a season-low 316
yards of total offense and was led by linebacker Lloyd Wilson, who
posted 13 tackles and a sack. Offensively, the Eagles were led by
quarterback Robbie Jenkins' two touchdowns rushing and two more passing.
Wide receiver Andre Jones caught five passes for 62 yards and two
touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Jermaine Taylor totaled 16 tackles
and a sack.
SCOUTING BRIDGEWATER:
Bridgewater is 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC following a 41-17
win over Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles led just
17-10 at the half, but broke out to a 31-10 lead after three quarters
in cruising to the win. BC rolled up 500 yards of total offense led
by junior quarterback Brandon Wakefield, who rushed for 109 yards
and a touchdowns and threw for 202 yards and two more scores. Sophomore
running back Marcus Washington added 90 yards and a score on the ground,
while senior wide receiver Nicholas Lehto hauled in seven passes for
138 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles' defense produced six sacks
in holding E&H to -53 yards rushing. Senior linebacker Jermaine
Taylor, the 2002 ODAC Player of the Year and an NFL prospect, led
the BC defense with five tackles and an interception. On the season,
Wakefield has completed 50 percent of his passes for 1,271 yards and
10 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 252 yards and five more scores.
Washington has carried 49 times for 342 yards and two touchdowns,
while sophomore fullback Eric Spence had added 282 yards and three
touchdowns on the ground. Lehto has been Wakefield's favorite target,
hauling in 30 passes for 544 yards and two touchdowns. Taylor is the
leader of the Eagles' defense, producing 71 tackles, 13 for a loss,
and three sacks.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Senior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of W&L athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback for
the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. The starting signal-caller each of the past three seasons,
Dean has completed 48.5 percent (278-573) of his passes for 3,166
yards and 17 touchdowns for his career. He had his best game in a
General uniform against Hampden-Sydney a couple of weeks ago, completing
26-of-40 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown. On the mound, Dean
claims a 2.14 career ERA with 168 strikeouts and just 48 walks in
posting a 20-5 career record. He was 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA last spring
en route to posting First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and
Second Team Academic All-America honors.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE -- PART TWO:
Dean comprises one half of a two-headed monster at quarterback.
He and sophomore Greg Tweardy have been sharing snaps as the position
for much of the season. Tweardy led the Generals' comeback win against
Catholic, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.
For his career, Tweardy has completed 48.1 percent (52-108) of his
tosses for 600 yards and five touchdowns.
DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 147 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 48 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the
1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a
score since the 1992 season.
NO-NAME NO-MORE:
Sophomore defensive lineman Liam Murray's name had not been called
much during his first 16 games in a W&L uniform, but that all
changed on Saturday at Guilford. Murray, a reserve defensive tackle,
had recorded seven career tackles entering the game. He saw extended
action against the Quakers and responded with a team-best 11 tackles,
including two for a loss.
TALE OF TWO HALVES:
It's been a tale of two halves for the Generals in 2003 as they
have been outscored 121-36 in the first half of games this season.
W&L tends to recover in the second half, cutting the margin to
84-71. The Generals have not held a first-quarter lead yet this season
and have led at the half just once.
FOR THE RECORD:
The Generals' turnaround from a 20-point deficit late in the third
quarter (27-7) against Catholic marked the largest come-from-behind
win for a W&L team since the Generals recovered from a 20-0 hole
in the first half for a 26-20 win over Guilford on Oct. 16, 1965.
Ironically, both games were homecoming contests on Wilson Field.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS:
Junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham hauled in a 21-yard touchdown
pass in the Generals' win over Catholic. For Callaham, it was his
eighth career touchdown reception, tying him for ninth on the school's
all-time list. J.T. Malatesta '99 and Tony Perry '76 hold the record
with 16 touchdown receptions.
FOOTBALL AND ACADEMICS:
Washington and Lee has featured a First Team Verizon Academic
All-American each of the past two seasons and claims another player
with an Academic All-America award in another sport. Tight end Jay
Thomas '03 was presented the award following the 2001 season and offensive
lineman John Melillo '03 won the award following the 2002 campaign.
Senior quarterback Peter Dean was a Second Team Academic All-America
selection last spring in baseball.
