THE SERIES:
W&L and Catholic will be meeting for the eighth time with
the Generals holding a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series which
began during the 1981 season. Catholic has won two of the last
three meetings since joining the ODAC after W&L won each of the
first four encounters. However, the Cardinals have never defeated
W&L in Lexington, carrying an 0-4 streak.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his ninth season as
the head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims
a 39-43-1 (.476) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories
at W&L and needs 10 more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second
place. He is 1-2 all-time against Catholic. The Cardinals are led
by second-year Head Coach Tom Mulholland (Catholic '92). Mulholland
is 5-9 (.516) at Catholic, 1-0 against Washington and Lee.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 421-469-39 (.474) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
Randolph-Macon sophomore running back Jimmy Stevens scored on
a 1-yard touchdown run in double-overtime to lift the Yellow Jackets
to a 15-9 win over Washington and Lee. Randolph-Macon knotted the
game at 9-9 as sophomore placekicker Reggie Moore booted a 25-yard
field goal with 14 seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game
into overtime. In the first overtime, W&L had the ball first,
but could not score as freshman placekicker Ben Longs 42-yard
field goal attempt was wide-left. The Yellow Jackets countered by
driving inside the W&L 1-yard line, but the Generals defense
held and Moores 18-yard field goal attempt was wide-right setting
up the second overtime period. R-MC got the ball first in the second
overtime, setting up Stevens game-winning touchdown. However,
the snap was low on the PAT attempt, opening the door for W&L.
On W&Ls ensuing possession, the Generals faced a fourth-and-goal
on the R-MC 12-yard line, but senior quarterback Peter Deans
fade pass for junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham in the corner of
the end zone fell to the turf and the Yellow Jackets walked away with
the win. Long booted three field goals on the day, including a 42-yarder
early in the fourth quarter. Freshman running back Richard
Garland rushed for 62 yards on 18 carries, while sophomore running
back Michael Lackett gained 57 yards on 15 carries. Dean completed
11-of-26 passes for 124 yards. Senior linebacker Ben Krasnoff
paced the W&L defense with eight tackles, a sack and a fumble
recovery. Stevens led the Macon offense with 71 yards and one touchdown
on 22 carries.
THE LAST MEETING:
(CUA 39, W&L 20; October 12, 2002 - Washington, D.C.)
Washington and Lee held a 7-0 lead after one quarter then saw
Catholic score 33 unanswered points in a 39-20 loss to the Cardinals.
The Catholic run included three touchdown passes from senior quarterback
Bill Sutton to wide receiver Nick Bublavi, the last of which was a
67-yarder to make the score 26-7 just 5:54 into the second half. Senior
running back Tokollo Moffat added a 50-yard touchdown run and linebacker
Dave Beety scored on a 37-yard interception return during the run.
W&L wide receiver Taylor Callaham scored two fourth quarter touchdowns
for the Generals. He paced the W&L offense with six catches for
86 yards and the two scores. Senior running back Chris Sullivan rushed
for 57 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, while quarterback Greg
Tweardy completed 11-of-23 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns
filling in for the injured starter, Peter Dean. He was intercepted
three times. Safety Ted Maffitt led the defense with 14 tackles. Bublavi
led the Catholic offense with seven catches for 126 yards and three
touchdowns, while Moffat rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown on
18 carries. Sutton completed 14-of-23 passes for 234 yards and three
touchdowns. Senior linebacker Ryan Welsh led the Catholic defense
with 11 tackles.
SCOUTING CATHOLIC:
Catholic is 1-3 overall, 1-0 in the ODAC and is coming off a bye
week. In their last contest, the Cardinals defeated Randolph-Macon,
31-14, on September 27 in Washington, D.C. Catholic broke open a 7-7
game at the half as junior quarterback Pat Truxillo found junior wide
receiver Nick Bublavi with three touchdown passes in the second half.
Bublavi led the Cardinals with 10 catches for 209 yards and the three
scores, while Truxillo completed 19-of-29 passes for 289 yards and
four touchdowns. However, he was sacked seven times by the Macon defense.
Junior running back Ed Smith gained 69 yards on 16 rushing attempts
to suppliment the passing attack. Junior defensive back Sean Heenan
paced the Catholic defense with nine tackles and a sack. On the season,
Bablavi, a Third Team All-American in 2002, leads the team with 30
catches for 518 yards and five touchdowns. Truxillo has completed
48.5 percent of his passes for 669 yards and five touchdowns, while
Smith has rushed for 218 yards on 58 carries. The Cardinals offensive
line has struggled early on, allowing 22 sacks in just four games
thus far. Defensively, Heenan leads the team with 33 tackles, a pair
of pass breakups and one sack. Junior linebackers Brendan Nugent and
Bobby Stutz claim 30 tackles each, with Stutz adding 13 tackles for
a loss, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Senior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. The starting signal-caller each of the past two seasons,
Dean has completed 47.4 percent of his passes for 2,621 yards and
15 touchdowns for his career. On the mound, Dean claims a 2.14 career
ERA with 168 strikeouts and just 48 walks in posting a 20-5 career
record. He was 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA last spring en route to posting
First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and Second Team Academic
All-America honors.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE -- PART TWO:
Dean now comprises one half of a two-headed monster at quarterback.
He and sophomore Greg Tweardy rotated every other possession against
Centre and split time against Randolph-Macon. In the win over Centre,
the duo combined to complete 13-of-26 passes for 153 yards and two
touchdowns with no interceptions. In the loss to Macon, the two combined
to complete 14-of-33 passes for 144 yards.
DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 138 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 45 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the
1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a
score since Jon Wagner did so against Davidson during the 1992 season.
SECONDARY ISSUES:
Though the Generals' defense has produced nine turnovers in four
games (2.3 tpg.), all of have been by fumble. The W&L defense
has yet to record an interception this season and W&L's starting
cornerbacks, sophomore Joe Greenhill and freshman Rob Rain have no
career INT's. However, senior safeties Ted Maffitt and Lee Walker
claim 13 career interceptions between them.
LONG AND LONGER:
Freshman placekicker Ben Long broke a W&L string of 12 consecutive
games without a field goal in a win over Centre, then booted three
more in a 15-9 overtime loss to Randolph-Macon on Saturday. Included
in that total was a 42-yarder, the Generals' longest field goal since
Brad Wiginton kicked a 42-yard field goal to defeat Sewanee during
the 1998 season. Long is 4-of-6 on field goal attempts this season.
EXTRA FRAMES:

lineman John Melillo '03 won the award following the 2002 campaign.
