THE SERIES:
W&L and Emory & Henry will be meeting for the 33rd time, with the Wasps holding a 25-7 advantage in the all-time series which began during the 1921 season.  The Generals snapped a string of 19 consecutive wins by E&H with a 22-9 win last season in Lexington. The nine points scored by the Wasps in that game was the least by E&H against the Generals since a 7-6 E&H win in 1977.

THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his ninth season as the head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims a 40-46-1 (.466) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories at W&L and needs nine more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second place. He is 1-7 all-time against Emory & Henry. The Wasps are led by 22nd-year head coach Lou Wacker (Richmond '58), who has posted a 158-70 (.693) overall record in his only head coaching position. Wacker is 19-2 all-time against W&L.

ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 422-472-39 (.473) all-time record. The Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.

LAST TIME OUT:
Bridgewater scored three second-half touchdowns to pull away for a 28-3 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Eagles struck on the game's opening possession as sophomore fullback Robert Matthews scored on a 40-yard touchdown run. W&L climbed to within 7-3 with 7:49 remaining in the first half as freshman placekicker Ben Long booted a school-record-tying 47-yard field goal and the teams went into the half with the Eagles leading 7-3. Bridgewater began to pull away in the third quarter as sophomore tailback Marcus Washington produced a 14-yard touchdown run with 10:14 remaining in the period. Freshman tailback Winston Young put BC up 21-3 on a 2-yard touchdown reception with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter and sophomore wide receiver Brian Awkard added a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final margin. Senior quarterback Peter Dean led the W&L offense, completing 15-of-36 passes for 159 yards. He was sacked six times. Defensively, junior linebacker Lloyd Wilson notched 11 tackles. Bridgewater was paced offensively by Washington, who rushed 14 times for 85 yards and one touchdown. Matthews gained 73 yards on nine carries, while junior quarterback Brandon Wakefield completed 17-of-28 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown.

THE LAST MEETING:
(W&L 22, E&H 9; November 9, 2002 - Lexington, Va.)

The Washington and Lee football team ended a streak of 19 consecutive losses to Emory & Henry with a 22-9 victory over the Wasps. The Generals had not beaten E&H since a 21-15 win on September 18, 1982. W&L assumed a 7-0 lead just 3:04 into the game as senior running back Chris Sullivan scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. The Wasps responded with 7:20 remaining in the opening quarter as placekicker David Burks booted a 21-yard field goal to cut the W&L lead to 7-3. The Generals went up 14-3 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Sullivan with 9:17 remaining in the half, but E&H junior running back Dan Hammonds scored on a 2-yard run with 2:23 remaining in the half to again cut the W&L lead to 14-9. The ensuing two-point conversion failed and the teams went to the half with W&L leading, 14-9. Both teams played a scoreless third quarter before Sullivan galloped 19 yards to paydirt with 7:30 remaining in the game. The two-point conversion pass was successful and the Generals' defense held for the 22-9 win. W&L was led by Sullivan, who rushed 44 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Peter Dean completed 11-of-28 passes for 109 yards and two interceptions, while fullback Chris Caramore rushed for 42 yards on nine carries and caught five passes for 46 yards. Linebacker Lloyd Wilson led the W&L defense with nine tackles. Emory & Henry was led by quarterback Shannon Johnson, who completed 13-of-27 passes for 116 yards and rushed 13 times for 48 yards. Hammonds rushed for 86 yards and the one touchdown on 23 carries. Senior defensive end Jackie Akers led the Wasp defense with 12 tackles.

SCOUTING EMORY & HENRY:
Emory & Henry is 3-5 overall, 1-3 in the ODAC following a 30-16 come-from-behind win over Catholic on Saturday. The Wasps trailed 16-0 at the break, but scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Junior running back Chris Miller led the E&H charge, rushing for all four touchdowns in the fourth quarter and finishing the game with 148 yards rushing on 23 attempts. Freshman quarterback Todd Woods completed just 4-of-15 passes for 16 yards in the game. Senior linebacker Nick Colobro and sophomore linebacker Anthony Boyd led the Wasp defense with nine tackles and a half sack each. For the season, Miller is the ODAC's leading rusher with 821 yards and 10 touchdowns on 178 carries. Woods has completed 50.2 percent of his passes for 1,478 yards and 10 touchdowns, while freshman wide receiver Jerad Jackson has caught 28 passes for 353 yards and three scores. Senior tight end Adam Brightbill has also tallied 28 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Boyd leads the way with 79 tackles, while senior cornerback Jay Clark has totaled 23 tackles and five interceptions. The Wasps rank last in the ODAC in total defense, allowing an average of 440.4 yards per game. In particular, E&H has had trouble stopping the run, allowing 246.5 yards per game on the ground.

DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Senior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents of W&L athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals' baseball team. The starting signal-caller each of the past three seasons, Dean has completed 48.1 percent (293-609) of his passes for 3,325 yards and 17 touchdowns for his career. He had his best game in a General uniform against Hampden-Sydney a few of weeks ago, completing 26-of-40 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown. On the mound, Dean claims a 2.14 career ERA with 168 strikeouts and just 48 walks in posting a 20-5 career record. He was 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA last spring en route to posting First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and Second Team Academic All-America honors.

DOUBLE-TROUBLE -- PART TWO:
Dean comprises one half of a two-headed monster at quarterback. He and sophomore Greg Tweardy have been sharing snaps as the position for much of the season. Tweardy led the Generals' comeback win against Catholic, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns. For his career, Tweardy has completed 48.1 percent (52-108) of his tosses for 600 yards and five touchdowns.

DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 149 turnovers since the beginning of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during that span. In fact, W&L has gone 49 straight games without scoring a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the 1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a score since the 1992 season.

NO-NAME NO-MORE:
Sophomore defensive lineman Liam Murray's name had not been called much during his first 16 games in a W&L uniform, but that has all changed in the past two weeks. Murray, who had been a reserve defensive tackle, claimed just seven career tackles entering the game against Guilford two weeks ago. He saw extended action against the Quakers and responded with a team-best 11 tackles, including two for a loss. Murray got the start against Bridgewater last week and recorded seven tackles and a sack.

TALE OF TWO HALVES:
It's been a tale of two halves for the Generals in 2003 as they have been outscored 128-39 in the first half of games this season. W&L tends to recover in the second half, cutting the margin to 95-71. The Generals have not held a first-quarter lead yet this season and have led at the half just once.

FOR THE RECORD:
The Generals' turnaround from a 20-point deficit late in the third quarter (27-7) against Catholic marked the largest come-from-behind win for a W&L team since the Generals recovered from a 20-0 hole in the first half for a 26-20 win over Guilford on Oct. 16, 1965. Ironically, both games were homecoming contests on Wilson Field.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS:
Junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass in the Generals' win over Catholic. For Callaham, it was his eighth career touchdown reception, tying him for ninth on the school's all-time list. J.T. Malatesta '99 and Tony Perry '76 hold the record with 16 touchdown receptions.

LONGEST OF ALL-TIME:
Freshman placekicker Ben Long can claim the same name and the same record. In Saturday's loss to Bridgewater, Long tied the W&L record for longest field goal when he booted a 47-yarder in the second quarter. Long tied the record held by Drew Thomas '96 since the 1994 season.
