THE SERIES:
W&L and Guilford will be meeting for the 17th time with the
series tied at 8-8. The Generals have won the last three meetings
in the series, including a 31-30 win last season in Greensboro, N.C.
In that game, the Generals used a fake-spike play, which was
featured on ESPN's hidden video, to win the game. W&L has
scored 31 points in each of its last two games with the Quakers in
Greensboro and is averaging 24.8 points per game against Guilford
in the last six meetings. During that time, W&L has scored at
least 20 points in every game.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his ninth season as
the head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims
a 40-44-1 (.477) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories
at W&L and needs nine more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for
second place. He is 4-4 all-time against Guilford. The Quakers are
led by 13th-year Head Coach Mike Ketchum (Guilford '78), who is 51-73
(.411) overall at Guilford.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 422-470-39 (.474) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
Hampden-Sydney racked up 548 yards of total offense, led by sophomore
quarterback J.D. Riccas 255 yards passing and five touchdowns,
in defeating Washington and Lee, 45-17, on Saturday afternoon. The
Tigers broke open a 3-3 game with three touchdowns in a span of 7:05,
including a 98-yard touchdown pass from senior wide receiver Conrad
Singh to junior wide receiver Tripp Murchison to make the score 24-3
with 11:24 remaining in the second quarter. The Generals sliced the
H-SC lead to 24-10 on a 28-yard touchdown run by freshman running
back Richard Garland with 8:38 left in the half, but the Tigers added
two late-half touchdowns for a 38-10 lead at the break. Garland led
the W&L ground game with 32 yards on three carries, while senior
quarterback Peter Dean completed 26-of-40 passes for a career-high
293 yards and one touchdown. Junior wide receiver John Barnwell
hauled in a career-high eight passes for 99 yards and sophomore wide
receiver Clark Kensinger caught four passes for 62 yards and a fourth-quarter
touchdown. Senior defensive lineman Brian Becker paced the W&L
defense with nine tackles. Singh, the nations leading receiver,
caught nine passes for 146 yards and a touchdown, while junior running
back CW Clemmons rushed 17 times for 46 yards and caught three passes
for 56 yards and three touchdowns.
THE LAST MEETING:
(W&L 31, GC 30; September 21, 2002 - Greensboro, N.C.)
Washington and Lee quarterback Peter Dean faked a spike and then
connected with wide receiver Taylor Callaham on a 17-yard touchdown
pass with 10 seconds remaining to give the Generals a 31-30 victory
over Guilford. W&L stopped the Quakers on a fourth-and-two play
on the W&L 20-yard line with 1:30 remaining in the game as linebacker
Ben Krasnoff corralled Guilford running back Brandon Lockhart for
a two-yard loss. The Generals then drove 78 yards in seven plays for
the game-winning score. Guilford assumed a 30-18 lead with 11:18 remaining
in the fourth quarter as defensive back Sherod Long intercepted Dean
and rumbled 58 yards for a touchdown. The Generals began their comeback
as senior running back Chris Sullivan scored on a 7-yard touchdown
run to cut the GC lead to 30-25 with 7:26 remaining. The Washington
and Lee offense was led by Sullivan, who rushed for 181 yards and
two touchdowns on 39 carries. He also tallied two catches for 33 yards
and a touchdown, returned two kickoffs for 59 yards and two punts
for 21 yards in amassing 294 all-purpose yards. Dean completed 10-of-23
attempts for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while Callaham caught four
passes for 48 yards and one score. Krasnoff led the W&L defense
with 13 tackles. Guilford quarterback Josh Smith completed 13-of-22
passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Chris McKinney
grabbed seven passes for 99 yards and one score, while linebacker
Wes Kidd led the Quakers' defense with 14 tackles and a sack.
SCOUTING GUILFORD:
Guilford is 1-5 overall, 0-2 in the ODAC after a 50-10 loss to
Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers took a 3-0 lead with
12:12 remaining in the first quarter on a 38-yard field goal by freshman
placekicker Travis Frazier, but saw the Eagles score 37-straight points
before the halftime break. From there, the Eagles cruised to the win.
The Quakers amassed just 197 yards of total offense led by junior
wide receiver Carlos D'Agostino's four catches for 76 yards and a
touchdown. Senior Josh Smith and freshman Chris Gammon split time
at quarterback, combining to complete 10-of-26 passes for 144 yards
and one touchdown. Guilford gained just 53 yards on the ground, led
by freshman running back Mario James' 15 yards on two carries. Junior
safety Chase Waterhouse paced the Quaker defense with eight tackles.
On the season, Guilford has struggled offensively, averaging just
69.5 yards rushing and 253.0 yards of total offense per game. Senior
running back Brian Caye leads the team in rushing with 153 yards on
61 carries. Smith has completed 49.4 percent of his passes for 692
yards and three touchdowns, while Gammon has connected on 40.3 percent
of his tosses for 404 yards and four scores. Freshman slotback Kyle
Kiser has been the favorite target for both, catching a team-high
nine passes for 149 yards. Waterhouse leads the defense with 48 tackles,
one interception and one fumble recovery.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Senior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. The starting signal-caller each of the past three seasons,
Dean has completed 48.5 percent (261-538) of his passes for 2,965
yards and 17 touchdowns for his career. He had his best game in a
General uniform against H-SC on Saturday completing 26-of-40 passes
for 293 yards and one touchdown. On the mound, Dean claims a 2.14
career ERA with 168 strikeouts and just 48 walks in posting a 20-5
career record. He was 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA last spring en route to
posting First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and Second Team
Academic All-America honors.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE -- PART TWO:
Dean comprises one half of a two-headed monster at quarterback.
He and sophomore Greg Tweardy have been sharing snaps as the position
for the past several weeks. Tweardy led the Generals' comeback win
against Catholic, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards and two
touchdowns. For his career, Tweardy has completed 51.0 percent (51-100)
of his tosses for 594 yards and five touchdowns.
DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 145 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 47 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the
1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a
score since the 1992 season.
SECONDARY ISSUES ADDRESSED:
Entering its game against Catholic, the W&L defense had not
posted an interception on the season. The Generals' secondary solved
the issue by picking off four passes against the Cardinals. The Generals'
four picks totaled one each for every member of the starting secondary.
W&L responded last week with two interceptions against Hampden-Sydney.
FOR THE RECORD:
The Generals' turnaround from a 20-point deficit late in the third
quarter (27-7) against Catholic marked the largest come-from-behind
win for a W&L team since the Generals recovered from a 20-0 hole
in the first half for a 26-20 win over Guilford on Oct. 16, 1965.
Ironically, both games were homecoming contests on Wilson Field.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS:
Junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham hauled
in a 21-yard touchdown pass in the Generals' win over Catholic. For
Callaham, it was his eighth career touchdown reception, tying him
for ninth on the school's all-time list. J.T. Malatesta '99 and Tony
Perry '76 hold the record with 16 touchdown receptions.
FOR THE RECORD:
Junior wide receiver John Barnwell had a career day against Hampden-Sydney,
catching eight passes for 99 yards. In fact, Barnwell entered the
game with just 10 catches for 109 yards for his career, all this season.
His eight catches were the most by a W&L receiver since Jay Thomas
'03 snagged eight passes for 125 yards against Guilford during the
2001 season.
FOOTBALL AND ACADEMICS:
Washington and Lee has featured a First Team Verizon Academic
All-American each of the past two seasons and claims another player
with an Academic All-America award in another sport. Tight end Jay
Thomas '03 was presented the award following the 2001 season and offensive
lineman John Melillo '03 won the award following the 2002 campaign.
Senior quarterback Peter Dean was a Second Team Academic All-America
selection last spring in baseball.
