THE SERIES:
W&L and Randolph-Macon will be meeting for the 51st time on
Saturday, with the Yellow Jackets holding a 22-25-3 advantage in the
all-time series that began during the 1903 season. After a string
of 10 consecutive wins by RMC, W&L has battled back to take two
of the last three games in the series, including a 7-3 win last season
in Lexington. W&L has not beaten Macon in Ashland since
a 33-8 win during the 1989 season.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his ninth season as
the head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims
a 39-42-1 (.482) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories
at W&L and needs 10 more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second
place. He is 2-6 all-time against Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets
are led by seventh-year Head Coach Scott Boone (Wabash '81). Boone
is 33-31 (.516) at Macon and 4-2 all-time against Washington and Lee.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 421-468-39 (.475) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
THE LAST MEETING:
(W&L 7, R-MC 3; October 5, 2002 - Lexington, Va.)
W&L held off Randolph-Macon for a 7-3 win at Wilson Field.
Randolph-Macon produced a 14-play, 64-yard drive and had a first and
goal on the W&L 6-yard line with under a minute remaining; however,
the W&L defense held on downs and the Generals ran out the final
33 seconds for the win. The Yellow Jackets assumed a 3-0 lead with
1:49 remaining in the first quarter as placekicker David Ping booted
a 42-yard field goal. The Generals answered with 7:55 remaining in
the first half as quarterback Peter Dean found wide receiver Jonathan
Brimer with a 20-yard scoring strike. Washington and Lee was led by
Dean, who completed 16-of-33 attempts for 201 yards and one touchdown.
He was intercepted twice. Senior running back Chris Sullivan rushed
for 89 yards on 27 carries, while Brimer caught three passes for 57
yards and one touchdown. The W&L defense was led by linebacker
Ben Krasnoff, who totaled 12 tackles and forced a fumble. Randolph-Macon
was led by senior quarterback Hunter Price, who completed 26-of-45
passes for 204 yards. Senior running back David Strong hauled in nine
passes for 66 yards, while senior safety Bobby Akers recorded eight
tackles and an interception.
LAST TIME OUT:
Washington and Lee sophomore running back Michael Lackett scored
a pair of touchdowns in the second half to lift the Generals to a
23-17 win over Centre. Lackett scored his first touchdown on a 12-yard
pass from senior quarterback Peter Dean with 3:11 remaining in the
third quarter for a 17-10 W&L lead. Lackett then found the end
zone on an 18-yard run with 3:26 remaining in the game to give the
Generals a 23-10 advantage. The ensuing PAT attempt was wide. Centre
cut the W&L lead to 23-17 on a 4-yard scoring pass from junior
quarterback Brian Behrendt to senior running back Lorenzo Engleman
with 1:40 remaining. However, the Generals recovered an onside kick
and ran out the clock for their first win of the season. Lackett totaled
60 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for 21 yards. Dean
and sophomore quarterback Greg Tweardy combined to complete 13-of-26
passes for 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while freshman running
back Richard Garland carried 29 times for 100 yards. Junior wide receiver
Taylor Callaham added four receptions for 56 yards and a first-quarter
touchdown. Senior safety Ted Maffitt led the W&L defense with
11 tackles and a forced fumble. Behrendt led the Centre offense, completing
33-of-50 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Engleman rushed
16 times for 79 yards and caught 11 passes for 78 yards. He also recorded
40 return yards for 197 all-purpose yards on the day. Senior safety
John Ortega led the Colonel defense with 14 tackles.
SCOUTING RANDOLPH-MACON:
Randolph-Macon is 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the ODAC following a 31-14
loss to Catholic on Saturday. With the score tied at 7-7 at the half,
the Cardinals responded with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal
to assume a commanding 24-7 lead with 8:14 remaining in the game.
The Yellow Jackets clawed to within 24-14 with 1:55 remaining on a
3-yard scoring strike from junior quarterback Mike Jenkins to junior
wide receiver Casey Maher, but the Cardinals iced the game with a
47-yard touchdown pass just 25 seconds later. Jenkins led the R-MC
offense, completing 25-of-47 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns.
Sophomore wide receiver Daryl Kimball caught five passes for 66 yards,
while Maher hauled in four passes for 55 yards and the one score.
The other Macon touchdown was hauled in by sophomore tight end Seth
Rapoza, brother of former W&L All-America offensive lineman Mat
Rapoza '03. Sophomore defensive end Thomas Rhone led the Macon defense,
which produced seven sacks, with eight tackles and three sacks. On
the season, Jenkins has completed 46.0 percent of his passes for 616
yards and two touchdowns with five interceptions. Sophomore wide receiver
Clay Muench has been his favorite receiver, hauling in 18 passes for
158 yards, while senior running back E.J. Bush had carried 84 times
for 283 yards and one score. Defensively, junior linebacker Casey
Allen leads the way with 30 tackles.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Senior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. The starting signal-caller each of the past two seasons,
Dean has completed 47.7 percent of his passes for 2,497 yards and
15 touchdowns for his career. On the mound, Dean claims a 2.14 career
ERA with 168 strikeouts and just 48 walks in posting a 20-5 career
record. He was 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA last spring en route to posting
First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and Second Team Academic
All-America honors.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE -- PART TWO:
Dean now comprises one half of a two-headed monster at quarterback.
He and sophomore Greg Tweardy rotatedevery other possession against
Centre and combined to complete 13-of-26 passes for 153 yards and
two touchdowns with no interceptions. Tweardy was 7-of-16 for 95 yards
and a touchdown, while Dean was 6-of-10 for 58 yards and one score.
STAT OF THE CENTURY:
Freshman running back Richard Garland rushed for 100 yards on
29 carries against Centre last Saturday. Garland was the first W&L
running back in this century other than Marc Watson or Chris Sullivan
to hit the century mark. The last back other than Garland, Watson
or Sullivan to rush for 100 yards in a game was Hanley Sayers (143)
against Sewanee during the 1997 season.
DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 137 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 44 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the
1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a
score since Jon Wagner did so against Davidson during the 1992 season.
MAFFITT NAMED ODAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Senior strong safety Ted Maffitt was named the ODAC Defensive
Player of the Week after totaling 11 tackles, forcing a fumble and
recording a pass breakup. Maffitt leads the team with 31 tackles and
is tied for the ODAC lead in forced fumbles (2) and fumble recoveries
(2).
THE DROUGHT IS OVER:
With a 28-yard field goal just before the end of the half against
Centre, freshman placekicker Ben Long broke a W&L string of 12
consecutive games without a field goal. Long is currently second on
the team in scoring with seven points on four PAT's and the one field
goal. Long also handles the punting where he has averaged 34.4 yards
over 12 punts.
FOOTBALL AND ACADEMICS:
Washington and Lee has featured a First Team Verizon Academic
All-American each of the past two seasons and claims another player
with an Academic All-America award in another sport. Tight end Jay
Thomas '03 was presented the award following the 2001 season and offensive
lineman John Melillo '03 won the award following the 2002 campaign.
Senior quarterback Peter Dean was a Second Team Academic All-America
selection last spring in baseball. Melillo also garnered an NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship last season.
