THE SERIES:
W&L and Sewanee will be meeting for the 53rd time on Saturday,
with the Generals holding a 31-21 edge in the series that began during
the 1892 season. The two teams have met every year since 1955
and W&L's 31 wins against Sewanee are the most against any opponent.
The Generals are currently enjoying a streak of five consecutive wins
against the Tigers dating back to 1998. W&L won last season's
encounter, 26-14 in Lexington. Though W&L is just 9-16 all-time
at Sewanee's McGhee Field, the Generals have won three of the last
four games at Sewanee, including the last two by a total of seven
points.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his ninth season as
the head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims
a 38-41-1 (.481) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories
at W&L and needs 11 more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for second
place. He is 7-1 all-time against Sewanee. The Tigers are led by eighth-year
Head Coach John Windham (Vanderbilt '86). Windham is 33-35 (.485)
overall at Sewanee and 1-6 overall against Washington and Lee.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 420-467-39 (.475) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
THE LAST MEETING:
(W&L 26, UOS 14; October 26, 2002 - Lexington, Va.)
Quarterback Sean McGarvey completed 25-of-46 passes for 301 yards
and three touchdowns to lead the Generals past Sewanee, 26-14. The
Generals assumed a 20-0 halftime lead as McGarvey found wide receiver
Jonathan Brimer, senior tight end Jay Thomas and senior wide receiver
Dyllan Rankin with scoring strikes of 20, 6 and 21 yards, respectively.
The Tigers stormed back in the third quarter as senior quarterback
Kirk Holtgrewe scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 10 yards to cut the
W&L lead to 20-14 with 8:27 remaining in the third quarter. W&L
senior running back Chris Sullivan capped the scoring with a 45-yard
touchdown run with 9:30 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the
Generals their fifth straight win over Sewanee. McGarvey's career
day paced the Generals offense. His 301 yards were the most by a W&L
quarterback since the 1999 season. Sullivan rushed for 126 yards and
one touchdown on 29 carries, while Thomas caught seven passes for
51 yards and the one touchdown as W&L racked up a season-high
517 yards of total offense. Linebacker Ben Krasnoff led the Generals'
defense with 14 tackles. Holtgrewe paced the Sewanee offense with
25 yards rushing and 132 yards passing. Running back Justin Askew
rushed for 136 yards on 23 carries, while wide receiver Don Rodgers
caught seven passes for 67 yards. Defensive back Will Smith led the
Tiger defense with 14 tackles.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Washington and Lee football team managed just 174 total yards
to Johns Hopkins' 508 total yards as the Bue Jays downed the Generals
36-7. The Generals were scoreless on the day until sophomore running
back Michael Lackett capitalized on a 17-yard W&L drive in the
third quarter. Lackett, who led the Generals with 49 yards on
17 carries, produced a four-yard touchdown run at 7:29 in the third
to thwart the Blue Jay's attempted shutout. Johns Hopkins found the
scoreboard in every quarter, beginning with a 15-play, 69-yard drive
in the first that finished with a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore
T.J. Lyons. Blue Jay kicker Chris Smolyn opened up the second
quarter scoring with a 30-yard field goal at the 4:09 mark. Senior
quarterback George Merrell connected with frosh wide receiver Anthony
Triplin for a 12-yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes of the
second quarter, giving the home team a 16-0 lead going into the break.
Despite the Generals' third-quarter comeback hopes, two more touchdown
passes from Merrell and another touchdown run from Lyons put the game
out of reach. Senior quarterback Peter Dean led the General offense
with 121 passing yards, completing 10 of 27 attempts. Dean gave
up one interception and was sacked three times. Merrell threw a career-high
228 yards and added 78 rushing yards to lead the Blue Jay's offense.
On defense junior Matt Campbell amassed six tackles and sophomore
Mike Aynardi made five tackles and blocked a W&L punt.
SCOUTING SEWANEE:
Sewanee is 0-2 on the season following a 24-23 loss at Rose-Hulman
on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers battled back from a 17-0 first quarter
deficit to assume a 20-17 lead with 7:04 remaining in the third quarter,
but could not hold on for the win. Freshman quarterback Wes Satterfield
led the Sewanee offense, rushing for 70 yards and a touchdown on 22
carries and completing 15-of-27 passes for 163 yards. Sophomore placekicker
Jake Roberts drilled three field goals to keep the Tigers within striking
distance. Senior safety Luqman Salam led the Sewanee defense with
13 tackles. On the season, Satterfield has completed 30-of-47 passed
for 287 yards and one touchdown and has rushed for 102 yards and two
touchdowns on 36 carries. Junior wide receiver John Kelly has been
Satterfield's primary target, catching 15 passes for 164 yards and
one touchdown. Salam has posted 19 tackles in two outings to lead
the defense.
OH SO CLOSE:
The Generals have had numerous heartbreaking defeats in recent
memory, including a 21-14 overtime loss to Johns Hopkins in week one
of last season. All told, W&L has lost 11 games by seven points
or less since the beginning of the 1998 season.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Senior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. The starting signal-caller each of the past two seasons,
Dean has completed 47.1 percent of his passes for 2,338 yards and
14 touchdowns for his career. On the mound, Dean claims a 2.14 career
ERA with 168 strikeouts and just 48 walks in posting a 20-5 career
record. He was 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA last spring en route to posting
First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and Second Team Academic
All-America honors.
W&L vs. THE SOUTHERN COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE:
W&L sports a 57-65-3 (.468) all-time record against the current
members of the SCAC. However, the Generals have taken eight of the
last 10 games against the SCAC. Below is a breakdown:
Centre (20-33-2)
DePauw (0-0)
Millsaps (0-0)
Rhodes (6-11-1)
Rose-Hulman (0-0)
Sewanee (31-21)
Trinity (0-0)
ALIGNMENT CHANGE:
Washington and Lee Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Frank
Miriello will change his defensive philosophy this season. Miriello
had always featured a multiple 3-4 set which changes from a 3-4 to
a 4-3 depending on the call. This season, Miriello's defense will
exhibit a traditional 4-3 set.
DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 133 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 42 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the
1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a
score since Jon Wagner did so against Davidson during the 1992 season.
ON THE ROAD:
Washington and Lee's schedule features six road contests for the
first time since the 1989 season. In addition, the Generals will play
their first two games on the road for the first time since traveling
to Delaware Valley and Emory & Henry to begin the 1979 campaign.
In all, W&L's opening trips to Baltimore, Md., and Sewanee, Tenn.,
will cover 1382.2 miles.
CLOSE SERIES:
Washington and Lee and Sewanee have met 52 times over the years
and the series has seen its share of close games. In all, 25 of the
52 games have been determined by a touchdown or less. The Generals
have won each of the last five meetings, but all of them have been
close. In those five games, the average margin of victory is just
4.8 points with the largest margin of victory (26-12) coming last
season. The Generals current string of five straight victories is
the longest such streak in the series history. This season's September
contest marks the first time that W&L and Sewanee will not have
met in the month of October since the teams met on Nov. 1, 1969. The
last September meeting between the two teams was Sep. 26, 1941, a
20-19 Sewanee win.
FOOTBALL AND ACADEMICS:
Washington and Lee has featured a First Team Verizon Academic
All-American each of the past two seasons and claims another player
with an Academic All-America award in another sport. Tight end Jay
Thomas '03 was presented the award following the 2001 season and offensive
lineman John Melillo '03 won the award following the 2002 campaign.
Senior quarterback Peter Dean was a Second Team Academic All-America
selection last spring in baseball. Melillo also garnered an NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship last season.
