THE SERIES:
W&L and Hampden-Sydney will be meeting for the 62nd time,
with the Tigers holding a 30-29-2 edge in the all-time series which
began during the 1899 season. The two teams have met every year
since 1955, among the longest consecutive streaks for W&L (Centre
& Sewanee). Hampden-Sydney won last season's battle in Lexington
by a 44-13 count. However, the Tigers have not beaten the Generals
in Hampden-Sydney, Va., since a 28-20 Tiger win during the 1993 season,
a stretch of four games.
THE HEAD COACHES:
Frank Miriello (East Stroudsburg '67) is in his ninth season as
the head coach at W&L and his 35th year of coaching. He claims
a 40-43-1 (.482) overall record. Miriello is third all-time in victories
at W&L and needs nine more wins to overtake Lee McLaughlin for
second place. He is 6-2 all-time against Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers
are led by fourth-year Head Coach Marty Favret (Catholic '84), who
is 21-14 (.600) overall in his first head coaching position. Last
season, Favret led H-SC to an 8-2 overall record. He is 2-1 all-time
against Washington and Lee.
ALL-TIME RECORD:
W&L has compiled a 422-469-39 (.475) all-time record. The
Generals have been linked to the first intercollegiate football game
played in the south, an 1873 matchup with VMI.
LAST TIME OUT:
Washington and Lee scored 24 unanswered points in the final16:06
of the game for a 31-27 win over Catholic. The Generals trailed 27-7
with 8:17 remaining in the third quarter, but climbed to within 27-14
on a 21-yard scoring strike from sophomore quarterback Greg Tweardy
to junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham with 1:06 remaining in the
period. After a Cardinal punt with 8:35 remaining in the fourth quarter,
Tweardy again led the Generals on a scoring drive, this time an 11-play,
88-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight
end Hunter Whitfield with 4:40 remaining in the game. On the ensuing
Catholic possession, junior quarterback Pat Truxillo was intercepted
by freshman cornerback Rob Rain who returned the ball 12 yards to
the CUA 6-yard line, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run by sophomore
running back Michael Lackett on the game's next play. The PAT was
good, giving the Generals a 28-27 lead. After the Cardinals were forced
into a four-and-out on their own 11-yard line with 1:42 remaining
in the game, freshman placekicker Ben Long capped the scoring with
a 27-yard field goal with 1:19 remaining in the game. From there,
the W&L defense held again on four downs, solidifying the win.
Tweardy led the Generals, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards
and a pair of touchdowns. Lackett carried 11 times for 27 yards and
one touchdown and caught five passes for 69 yards, while Callaham
hauled in five passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Junior linebacker
Lloyd Wilson led the W&L defense with 10 tackles. Truxillo competed
17-of-35 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals.
He was intercepted four times on the afternoon.
THE LAST MEETING:
(H-SC 44, W&L 13; October 19, 2002 - Lexington, Va.)
Hampden-Sydney running back CW Clemmons produced a 67-yard touchdown
run on the team's second play from scrimmage and the Tigers never
looked back in claiming a 44-13 win over Washington and Lee. Leading
21-0 at the half, the Tigers scored two more touchdowns and a kicked
a field goal in the third quarter for a 38-0 lead. The Generals scored
two fourth quarter touchdowns as quarterback Sean McGarvey found senior
tight end Jay Thomas on scoring strikes of 30 and 10 yards. Clemmons
led the H-SC offense with 116 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Senior quarterback Mac Russell completed 16-of-24 passes for 149 yards
and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Conrad Singh caught seven
balls for 76 yards and one touchdown. Senior defensive back Chris
Scott recorded two tackles and an interception. Thomas led the Generals'
offense with four catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns. McGarvey
completed 12-of-26 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while
senior running back Chris Sullivan rushed 19 times for 55 yards. Linebacker
Lloyd Wilson led the W&L defense with 12 tackles and a half sack.
SCOUTING HAMPDEN-SYDNEY:
Hampden-Sydney is 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC after after defeating
Emory & Henry, 54-41, on Saturday in Emory, Va. The two teams
combined for 1,247 yards of total offense, a school-record 714 of
which came from Hampden-Sydney. Sophomore quarterback J.D. Ricca keyed
the Tigers, throwing for an ODAC-record 476 yards and three touchdowns.
His record was later broken by E&H quarterback Todd Woods, who
finished with 488 yards passing. Ricca was supplimented by junior
running back CW Clemmons, who rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns,
and caught four passes for 125 yards and one touchdown. Senior wide
receiver Conrad Singh added 12 catches for 130 yards in the game.
Defensively, the Tigers were paced by junior safety Jeff Inman, who
recorded six tackles and one interception. For the season, Ricca has
completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 1,639 yards and 11 touchdowns,
while Clemmons has rushed for 504 yards and 10 touchdowns on 87 carries.
Singh has been Ricca's favorite target, catching 52 passes for 698
yards and five touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Nick Ferrante has
caught 25 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, senior
safety Harper Thompson leads the way with 37 tackles, eight pass breakups
and two interceptions. Inman has 34 tackles, including eight for a
loss. Junior defensive end James Riley leads the ODAC with six sacks.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE:
Senior quarterback Peter Dean spells double-trouble for opponents
of Washington and Lee athletics. Not only is Dean the starting quarterback
for the football team, but he is also the top pitcher for the Generals'
baseball team. The starting signal-caller each of the past three seasons,
Dean has completed just over 47 percent of his passes for 2,672 yards
and 16 touchdowns for his career. On the mound, Dean claims a 2.14
career ERA with 168 strikeouts and just 48 walks in posting a 20-5
career record. He was 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA last spring en route to
posting First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and Second Team
Academic All-America honors.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE -- PART TWO:
Dean now comprises one half of a two-headed monster at quarterback.
He and sophomore Greg Tweardy have been sharing snaps as the position
for the last three weeks. Tweardy led the Generals' comeback win against
Catholic, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.
For his career, Tweardy has completed 51.6 percent of his tosses for
586 yards and five touchdowns.
DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS:
The Generals' defense has forced 143 turnovers since the beginning
of the 1998 season, but has scored just one defensive touchdown during
that span. In fact, W&L has gone 46 straight games without scoring
a defensive touchdown. W&L's last defensive touchdown occurred
on a fumble return in a 23-20 loss to Emory & Henry during the
1998 season. The Generals have not returned an interception for a
score since Jon Wagner did so against Davidson during the 1992 season.
SECONDARY ISSUES ADDRESSED:
Entering its game against Catholic, the W&L defense had not
posted an interception on the season. The Generals' secondary solved
the issue by picking off four passes against the Cardinals, including
one by the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week in freshman cornerback
Rob Rain, which set up the game-winning touchdown. The Generals' four
picks totaled one each for every member of the starting secondary.
FOR THE RECORD:
The Generals' turnaround from a 20-point deficit late in the third
quarter (27-7) against Catholic on Saturday marked the largest come-from-behind
win for a W&L team since the Generals recovered from a 20-0 hole
in the first half for a 26-20 win over Guilford on Oct. 16, 1965.
Ironically, both games were homecoming contests on Wilson Field.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS:
Junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham hauled in a 21-yard touchdown
pass in the Generals' win over Catholic. For Callaham, it was his
eighth career touchdown reception, tying him for ninth on the school's
all-time list. J.T. Malatesta '99 and Tony Perry '76 hold the record
with 16 touchdown receptions.
FOOTBALL AND ACADEMICS:
Washington and Lee has featured a First Team Verizon Academic
All-American each of the past two seasons and claims another player
with an Academic All-America award in another sport. Tight end Jay
Thomas '03 was presented the award following the 2001 season and offensive
lineman John Melillo '03 won the award following the 2002 campaign.
Senior quarterback Peter Dean was a Second Team Academic All-America
selection last spring in baseball. Melillo also garnered an NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship last season.
