W&L FOOTBALL FINISHES SEASON WITH 6-0 WIN OVER GREENSBORO
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio,
Texas/Alamo Heights) ran for 96 yards on 29 carries and established a
new Washington and Lee football career rushing record with 3,140 yards
as the Generals defeated Greensboro, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon in rainy
Greensboro, N.C. Sullivan's 96 yards give him 1,123 for the season and moved him past
Marc Watson's ('02) previous mark of 3,112 career rushing yards. The Generals punched in the game's lone score with just nine seconds
remaining in the first half when Sullivan charged seven yards into the
Pride endzone. When the ensuing extra point was blocked, W&L held
a 6-0 lead at the half. The Generals were led by Sullivan's 96 yards on the ground. Junior quarterback
Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) added 67 yards through the air
on 6-of-10 passing while also running for 30 yards on 13 carries. Junior
linebacker Ben Krasnoff (Towson, Md./Towson) totaled 16 tackles while
senior linebacker Matt Stavish (Sterling, Va./Park View) and freshman
defensive back Joe Greenhill (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) both
picked off Pride passes. Greensboro quarterback Anthony Durham completed 7-of-16 passes for 73
yards and one interception while running back Marc Clapp totaled 49 yards
rushing on 15 carries. The Generals wrap up their season with their fourth straight 5-5 campaign. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL ENDS STREAK, 22-9, OVER EMORY &
HENRY
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee football team ended a streak
of 19 consecutive losses to Emory & Henry with a 22-9 victory over
the Wasps on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Wasps (3-6, 1-4) responded with 7:20 remaining in the opening quarter
as sophomore placekicker David Burks (Oak Ridge, Tenn./Oak Ridge) booted
a 21-yard field goal to cut the W&L lead to 7-3. The Generals went up 14-3 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Sullivan with
9:17 remaining in the half, but E&H junior running back Dan Hammonds
(Newport, Tenn./Cocke County) scored on a 2-yard run with 2:23 remaining
in the half to again cut the W&L lead to 14-9. The ensuing two-point
conversion failed and the teams went to the half with W&L leading,
14-9. Both teams played a scoreless third quarter before Sullivan galloped
19 yards to paydirt with 7:30 remaining in the game. The two-point conversion
pass was successful and the Generals' defense held for the 22-9 win. W&L was led by Sullivan, who rushed 44 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns. He needs just 68 yards next week to break Marc Watson's school career rushing record of 3,112 yards. Junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) returned to the lineup, completing 11-of-28 passes for 109 yards and two interceptions. Sophomore fullback Chris Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y./LaSalle) rushed
for 42 yards on nine carries and caught five passes for 46 yards. Sophomore
linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) led the W&L
defense with nine tackles, while senior defensive end Brett Burns (Atlanta,
Ga./Westminster) recorded six tackles and two sacks. Emory & Henry was led by junior quarterback Shannon Johnson (Iron
Gate, Va./Alleghany), who completed 13-of-27 passes for 116 yards and
rushed 13 times for 48 yards. Hammonds rushed for 86 yards and the one
touchdown on 23 carries. Senior defensive end Jackie Akers (Abingdon,
Va./Abingdon) led the Wasp defense with 12 tackles. The loss assures E&H
of its first losing season since 1982. Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it travels to
Greensboro College for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO SECOND-RANKED BRIDGEWATER,
44-14 LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee football team committed seven
turnovers which led to 28 Bridgewater points in a 44-14 loss to the second-ranked
Eagles on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va. The Generals (3-5, 2-3) trailed just 24-14 entering the fourth quarter,
but BC scored on each of its final three possessions, including a 65-yard
interception return for a touchdown by Jared Brice with 1:47 remaining
in the game. The Eagles (8-0, 4-0) assumed a 17-0 lead with 11:14 remaining in the
first half before the Generals struck with a pair of touchdowns to cut
the deficit to 17-14 at the half. Senior running back Chris Sullivan (San
Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored on a 1-yard run with 3:17 remaining
in the half and again on a 36-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback
Sean McGarvey (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) with 13 seconds remaining. Sullivan led the W&L offense with 84 yards and one touchdown on 21
carries. He also caught three passes for 39 yards and a score. McGarvey
completed 16-of-31 passes for 203 yards, but was intercepted five times.
The W&L defense held Bridgewater to a season-low 316 yards of total
offense and was led by sophomore linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen
F. Austin), who posted 13 tackles and a sack. Offensively, the Eagles were led by quarterback Robbie Jenkins' two touchdowns
rushing and two more passing. Wide receiver Andre Jones caught five passes
for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Jermaine Taylor
totaled 16 tackles and a sack. Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it hosts Emory
& Henry for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL DOWNS SEWANEE FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT TIME,
26-14 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior quarterback Sean McGarvey
(Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) completed 25-of-46 passes for 301 yards
and three touchdowns to lead the Generals past Sewanee, 26-14, on Saturday
afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals (3-4) assumed a 20-0 halftime lead as McGarvey found junior
wide receiver Jonathan Brimer (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County), senior
tight end Jay Thomas (Houston, Texas/Kincaid) and senior wide receiver
Dyllan Rankin (Statesville, N.C./Woodberry Forest) with scoring strikes
of 20, 6 and 21 yards, respectively. The Tigers (4-4) stormed back in the third quarter as senior quarterback
Kirk Holtgrewe (Paris, Tenn./Henry County) scored on touchdown runs of
2 and 10 yards to cut the W&L lead to 20-14 with 8:27 remaining in
the third quarter. W&L senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo
Heights) capped the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown run with 9:30 remaining
in the fourth quarter to give the Generals their fifth straight win over
Sewanee. McGarvey's career day paced the Generals offense. His 301 yards were
the most by a W&L quarterback since the 1999 season. Sullivan rushed
for 126 yards and one touchdown on 29 carries, while Thomas caught seven
passes for 51 yards and the one touchdown as W&L racked up a season-high
517 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Ben Krasnoff (Towson, Md./Towson)
led the Generals' defense with 14 tackles. Holtgrewe paced the Sewanee offense with 25 yards rushing and 132 yards
passing. Junior running back Justin Askew (Rome, Ga./Model) rushed for
136 yards on 23 carries, while sophomore wide receiver Don Rodgers (Bowling
Green, Ky./Bowling Green) caught seven passes for 67 yards. Freshman defensive
back Will Smith (Roswell, Ga./Pope) led the Tiger defense with 14 tackles. Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it travels
to second-ranked Bridgewater. Game time is set for 1:00 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, 44-13 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney sophomore running back CW Clemmons (Covington,
Va./Alleghany) produced a 67-yard touchdown run on the team's second play
from scrimmage and the Tigers never looked back in claiming a 44-13 win
over Washington and Lee at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon. Leading 21-0 at the half, the Tigers (5-1, 3-1) scored two more touchdowns
and a kicked a field goal in the third quarter for a 38-0 lead. The Generals
(2-4, 2-2) scored two fourth quarter touchdowns as junior quarterback
Sean McGarvey (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) found senior tight end Jay
Thomas (Houston, Texas/Kincaid) on scoring strikes of 30 and 10 yards. Clemmons led the H-SC offense with 116 yards and two touchdowns on 11
carries. Senior quarterback Mac Russell (Selma, Ala./Morgan Academy) completed
16-of-24 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns, while junior wide receiver
Conrad Singh (Ft. Washington, Md./Gonzaga) caught seven balls for 76 yards
and one touchdown. Senior defensive back Chris Scott (Virginia Beach,
Va./Ocean Lakes) recorded two tackles and an interception. For Scott,
the interception was the 18th of his career, tying the ODAC record. Thomas led the Generals' offense with four catches for 80 yards and two
touchdowns. McGarvey completed 12-of-26 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns,
while senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights)
rushed 19 times for 55 yards. He also caught five passes for 55 yards
and returned two kickoffs for 37 yards. His 147 all-purpose yards give
him 5,285 career all-purpose yards, breaking the W&L record of 5,184
set by Marc Watson last season. Sophomore linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin,
Texas/Stephen F. Austin) led the W&L defense with 12 tackles and a
half sack. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Sewanee
for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO CATHOLIC, 39-20 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Washington and Lee football team held a 7-0 lead
after one quarter then saw Catholic University score 33 unaswered points
in a 39-20 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon in Washington,
D.C. The Catholic run included three touchdown passes from senior quarterback
Bill Sutton to sophomore wide receiver Nick Bublavi, the last of which
was a 67-yarder to make the score 26-7 just 5:54 into the second half.
Senior running back Tokollo Moffat added a 50-yard touchdown run and sophomore
linebacker Dave Beety scored on a 37-yard interception return during the
run. W&L (2-3, 2-1) sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills,
Md./McDonogh) scored two fourth quarter touchdowns for the Generals. He
paced the W&L offense with six catches for 86 yards and the two scores.
Senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights)
rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Freshman quarterback
Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) completed 11-of-23 passes
for 177 yards and two touchdowns filling in for the injured starter, junior
Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison). He was intercepted three times.
Junior safety Ted Maffitt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) led the defense with
14 tackles. Bublavi led the Catholic (2-3, 1-1) offense with seven catches for 126
yards and three touchdowns, while Moffat rushed for 113 yards and one
touchdown on 18 carries. Sutton completed 14-of-23 passes for 234 yards
and three touchdowns. Senior linebacker Ryan Welsh led the Catholic defense
with 11 tackles. Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday as it hosts Hampden-Sydney
for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL HOLDS OFF RANDOLPH-MACON, 7-3 LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee football team upped its record
to 2-2 overall, 2-0 in the ODAC with a 7-3 win over Randolph-Macon on
Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. Randolph-Macon produced a 14-play, 64-yard drive and had a first and
goal on the W&L 6-yard line with under a minute remaining; however,
the W&L defense held on four plays and the Generals ran out the final
33 seconds for the win. The Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-1) assumed a 3-0 lead with 1:49 remaining
in the first quarter as sophomore placekicker David Ping (Lynchburg, Va./E.C.
Glass) booted a 42-yard field goal. The Generals answered with 7:55 remaining
in the first half as junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James
Madison) found junior wide receiver Jonathan Brimer (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson
County) with a 20-yard scoring strike. Randolph-Macon was led by senior quarterback Hunter Price (Charlottesville,
Va./Albemarle), who completed 26-of-45 passes for 204 yards. In the process,
he became the R-MC all-time passing yards leader with 5,315 passing yards.
Senior running back David Strong (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) hauled
in nine passes for 66 yards, while senior safety Bobby Akers (Fairfax,
Va./Chantilly) recorded eight tackles and an interception. Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday as it travels to Catholic
for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO CENTRE, 19-13 DANVILLE, Ky. -- Centre College generated 13 of its 19 points
off Washington and Lee turnovers and hung on to defeat the Generals, 19-13,
in a non-conference football game Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky. Centre (4-0) put its first points on the board after Matt
Johnson hit W&L junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison),
jarring the ball loose. The fumble was recovered by the Colonels at the
W&L 5-yard line. One play later, Centre quarterback Brian Behrendt
found Bryan Walker for the touchdown. Nearing the end of the first half, the Colonels' Taylor
Hoffer recovered a fumble by W&L sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham
(Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) at the Generals' 45-yard line. Centre's ensuing
11-play drive culminated with a 32-yard field goal by Nick Zilich, making
it 10-0, Centre, at the half. Following an interception of Behrendt by junior defensive
back Ted Maffitt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal), the Generals marched twenty-nine
yards to the Centre 11-yard line, from where Dean hooked up with Callaham
for an 11-yard touchdown to cut the Colonels' lead to three. Trailing 16-7, another W&L possession resulted in a
fumble, this time by senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio,
Texas/Alamo Heights). Following the turnover, Zilich capped the Colonels'
drive by splitting the uprights with his fourth field goal of the day
and a 19-7 advantage. The Generals rallied to cut the lead to 19-13 on a 35-yard
scoring toss from Dean to Callaham, but the Colonels held on and ran out
the clock to secure the victory. On the offensive side of the ball, W&L (1-2, 1-0) was
led by Sullivan who racked up 100 yards on the ground (29 carries for
115 yards) for a school-record tying eighth straight time. Dean completed
7-of-18 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns, while Callaham caught
four balls for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Maffitt was the Generals' defensive leader, tallying 15
tackles, intercepting a pass, recovering a fumble and registering a sack. Washington and Lee is in action again next Saturday when

FOOTBALL GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Washington and Lee junior quarterback Peter Dean
(Vienna, Va./James Madison) faked a spike and then connected with sophomore
wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) on a 17-yard
touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining to give the Generals a 31-30
victory over Guilford in ODAC football action Saturday afternoon in Greensboro,
N.C. W&L (1-1, 1-0) stopped the Quakers on a fourth-and-two play on the
W&L 20-yard line with 1:30 remaining in the game as junior linebacker
Ben Krasnoff (Towson, Md./Towson) corralled Guilford running back Brandon
Lockhart for a two-yard loss. The Generals then drove 78 yards in seven
plays for the game-winning score. Guilford (1-2, 0-1) assumed a 30-18 lead with 11:18 remaining in the
fourth quarter as defensive back Sherod Long intercepted Dean and rumbled
58 yards for a touchdown. The Generals began their comeback as senior running back Chris Sullivan
(San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to
cut the GC lead to 30-25 with 7:26 remaining. The Washington and Lee offense was led by Sullivan, who rushed for 181
yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries. He also tallied two catches for
33 yards and a touchdown, returned two kickoffs for 59 yards and two punts
for 21 yards in amassing 294 all-purpose yards. Dean completed 10-of-23
attempts for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while Callaham caught four
passes for 48 yards and one score. Krasnoff led the W&L defense with
13 tackles. Guilford quarterback Josh Smith completed 13-of-22 passes for 236 yards
and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Chris McKinney grabbed seven passes
for 99 yards and one score, while linebacker Wes Kidd led the Quakers'
defense with 14 tackles and a sack. Washington and Lee returns to action on next Saturday as it travels to
Centre College for a 1:30 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO JOHNS HOPKINS, 21-14, IN
OVERTIME LEXINGTON, Va. -- Johns Hopkins used an 84-yard touchdown drive in the
final 1:20 of regulation and scored another touchdown in overtime to defeat
Washington and Lee, 21-14, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals (0-1) went up 14-7 on a 10-yard touchdown run by Chris Sullivan
(San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) with 1:20 remaining in regulation. However, Johns Hopkins senior quarterback Rob Fernand (Wayne, N.J./DePaul)
led the Blue Jays on a 6-play, 84-yard drive capped by a 34-yard touchdown
pass to sophomore wide receiver Brian Wolcott (Harding, Pa./Wyoming Area)
with 15 seconds remaining to knot the game at 14-14. In the overtime period, Fernand found Wolcott again for a 24-yard gain
to the one-yard line then called his own number one play later to give
Hopkins the 21-14 lead. The JHU defense then held on four plays to preserve
the overtime victory. Sullivan led the W&L offense with 152 yards and one touchdown on
the ground. He also caught three passes for 28 yards and totaled 28 yards
on returns for 208 all-purpose yards. Sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham
(Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) caught four passes for 52 yards and the game's
opening touchdown with 9:43 remaining in the third period. Junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) completed 12-of-28
attempts for 146 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while senior
linebacker Matt Stavish (Sterling, Va./Park View) paced the defense with
11 tackles, two sacks and one interception. Fernand completed 19-of-34 attempts for 239 yards and one touchdown.
He was picked off three times. Wolcott snared four passes for 75 yards,
while sophomore running back Adam Cook (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock)
rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Junior defensive
back Paul Longo (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) led the JHU defense
with seven tackles and one interception. Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it travels
