W&L FOOTBALL DEFEATS GREENSBORO, 27-14 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee exploded for three touchdowns in
the final 2:26 of the first half to defeat Greensboro College, 27-14,
in Division III football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. Greensboro (3-7) assumed a 7-0 lead with 5:23 remaining in the first
quarter as freshman running back Ted Hoyle (Denton, N.C./South Davidson)
scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. The play was set up by a 58-yard interception
return by junior defensive back Mantron Davis (Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest)
to the W&L 10-yard line just two plays earlier. The Generals (3-7) evened the game at 7-7 with 9:52 remaining in the
second quarter as sophomore wide receiver Clark Kensinger (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood)
hauled in a 55-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Peter Dean
(Vienna, Va./James Madison). W&L assumed a 14-7 lead with 2:26 left in the half as sophomore quarterback
Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored on a 1-yard touchdown
run. The Generals then successfully executed an onside kick and scored
three plays later as freshman running back Richard Garland (Fort Worth,
Texas/Arlington Heights) found paydirt from 1-yard out. After stopping Greensboro on three plays, the Generals scored again,
this time on a 28-yard strike from Tweardy to senior wide receiver Jonathan
Brimer (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County) with 16 seconds left in the
half for a 27-7 halftime edge. Greensboro was limited by 13 penalties for 118 yards and by holding the
ball for just 15:28 of the game. W&L controlled the ball for the other
44:32. Dean led the Generals' offense, throwing for 129 yards and one touchdown,
and running nine times for 43 yards. Tweardy threw for 96 yards and one
score, while Garland carried 40 times for 103 yards and one touchdown.
Senior linebacker Ben Krasnoff (Towson, Md./Towson) led the W&L defense
with nine tackles and a sack. Greensboro was paced by Hoyle's 35 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries.
Sophomore quarterback Justin Roberson (Hertford, N.C./Perquimans County)
completed just 10-of-23 passes for 59 yards and one touchdown and senior
wide receiver Ricky Moore (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) caught two passes
for 39 yards and a third quarter touchdown. Senior defensive back Ian
Mosher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) and senior linebacker Rick Tattersall

afternoon. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO BRIDGEWATER, 28-3 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Bridgewater scored three second-half touchdowns to
pull away for a 28-3 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action
on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Eagles (7-1, 4-0) struck on the game's opening possession as sophomore
fullback Robert Matthews (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) scored on a 40-yard
touchdown run. W&L (2-6, 1-4) climbed to within 7-3 with 7:49 remaining in the first
half as freshman placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military)
booted a school-record-tying 47-yard field goal and the teams went into
the half with the Eagles leading 7-3. Bridgewater began to pull away in the third quarter as sophomore tailback
Marcus Washington (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) produced a 14-yard touchdown
run with 10:14 remaining in the period. Freshman tailback Winston Young
(Brampton, Ont./Boyd Anderson) put BC up 21-3 on a 2-yard touchdown reception
with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter and sophomore wide receiver Brian
Awkard (Afton, Va./Nelson County) added a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown
in the fourth quarter for the final margin. Senior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) led the W&L
offense, completing 15-of-36 passes for 159 yards. He was sacked six times.
Defensively, junior linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F.
Austin) notched 11 tackles. Bridgewater was paced offensively by Washington, who rushed 14 times
for 85 yards and one touchdown. Matthews gained 73 yards on nine carries,
while junior quarterback Brandon Wakefield (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) completed
17-of-28 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Emory

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee scored 24 unanswered points in the
final16:06 of the game for a 31-27 win over Catholic in ODAC football
action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals (2-3, 1-1) trailed 27-7 with 8:17 remaining in the third
quarter, but climbed to within 27-14 on a 21-yard scoring strike from
sophomore quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) to junior
wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) with 1:06 remaining
in the period. After a Cardinal (1-4, 1-1) punt with 8:35 remaining in the fourth quarter,
Tweardy again led the Generals on a scoring drive, this time an 11-play,
88-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end
Hunter Whitfield (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Central) with 4:40 remaining in the
game. On the ensuing Catholic possession, junior quarterback Pat Truxillo (Frederick,
Md./Thomas Johnson) was intercepted by freshman cornerback Rob Rain (Dallas,
Texas/Highland Park) who returned the ball 12 yards to the CUA 6-yard
line, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Michael
Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township) on the game's next play. The PAT
was good, giving the Generals a 28-27 lead. After the Cardinals were forced into a four-and-out on their own 11-yard
line with 1:42 remaining in the game, freshman placekicker Ben Long (Frankford,
W.Va./Hargrave Military) capped the scoring with a 27-yard field goal
with 1:19 remaining in the game. From there, the W&L defense held
again on four downs, solidifying the win. Tweardy led the Generals, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards and
a pair of touchdowns. Lackett carried 11 times for 27 yards and one touchdown
and caught five passes for 69 yards, while Callaham hauled in five passes
for 64 yards and a touchdown. Junior linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin,
Texas/Stephen F. Austin) led the W&L defense with 10 tackles. Truxillo competed 17-of-35 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns to
lead the Cardinals. He was intercepted four times on the afternoon. Junior
running back Ed Smith (Wallington, N.J./Paramus Catholic) rushed 21 times
for 59 yards and two touchdowns, while junior tight end Kevin McNulty
(Elkins Park, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) caught five passes for 92 yards.
Senior linebacker John Blattner (Lutherville, Md./Loyola) paced the CUA
defense with nine tackles and a sack. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Hampden-Sydney

OVER CENTRE LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore running back Michael Lackett
(Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township) scored a pair of touchdowns in the second
half to lift the Generals to a 23-17 win over Centre in Division III football
action at Wilson Field on Saturday. Lackett scored his first touchdown on a 12-yard pass from senior quarterback
Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) with 3:11 remaining in the third
quarter for a 17-10 W&L lead. Lackett then found the end zone on an
18-yard run with 3:26 remaining in the game to give the Generals a 23-10
advantage. The ensuing PAT attempt was wide. Centre (3-1) cut the W&L lead to 23-17 on a 4-yard scoring pass
from junior quarterback Brian Behrendt (Paducah, Ky./Reidland) to senior
running back Lorenzo Engleman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Hughes) with 1:40 remaining.
However, the Generals (1-2) recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock
for their first win of the season. Lackett totaled 60 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for 21
yards. Dean and sophomore quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel
Park) combined to complete 13-of-26 passes for 153 yards and a pair of
touchdowns, while freshman running back Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington
Heights) carried 29 times for 100 yards. Junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham
(Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) added four receptions for 56 yards and a
first-quarter touchdown. Senior safety Ted Maffitt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal)
led the W&L defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Behrendt led the Centre offense, completing 33-of-50 passes for 295 yards
and two touchdowns. Engleman rushed 16 times for 79 yards and caught 11
passes for 78 yards. He also recorded 40 return yards for 197 all-purpose
yards on the day. Senior wide receiver Adam Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas)
hauled in 10 passes for 104 yards and one touchdown. Senior safety John
Ortega (Prestonsburg, Ky./Prestonsburg) led the Colonel defense with 14
tackles. W&L returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Randolph-Macon
for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL DEFEATED BY SEWANEE, 37-13 SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee freshman quarterback Wes
Satterfield rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns and completed 10-of-15
passes for 91 yards in leading the Tigers to a 37-13 win over Washington
and Lee at McGhee Field. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO JOHNS HOPKINS 36-7 IN SEASON OPENER BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee football team managed just 174 total yards to Johns Hopkins' 508 total yards as the Bue Jays downed the Generals 36-7 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.The Generals (0-1) were scoreless on the day until sophomore running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township) capitalized on a 17-yard W&L drive in the third quarter. Lackett, who led the Generals with 49 yards on 17 carries, made a four-yard touchdown run at 7:29 in the third to thwart the Blue Jay's attempted shutout. Johns Hopkins (2-0) found the scoreboard in every quarter, beginning with a 15-play, 69-yard drive in the first that finished with a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore T.J. Lyons. Blue Jay kicker Chris Smolyn opened up the second quarter scoring with a 30-yard field goal at the 4:09 mark. Senior quarterback George Merrell connected with frosh wide receiver Anthony Triplin for a 12-yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes of the second quarter, giving the home team a 16-0 lead going into the break. Despite the Generals' third-quarter comeback hopes, two more touchdown passes from Merrell and another touchdown run from Lyons put the game out of reach. Senior quarterback Peter Dean led the General offense with 121 passing yards, completing 10 of 27 attempts. Dean gave up one interception and was sacked three times. Merrel threw a career-high 228 yards and added 78 rushing yards to lead the Blue Jay's offense. On defense junior Matt Campbell amassed six tackles and sophomore Mike Aynardi made five tackles and blocked a W&L punt. Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday when the Generals travel to Sewanee for a 1:30 (CST) contest.
