W&L FOOTBALL DEFEATS GREENSBORO, 21-7
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee football team
earned its first winning season since 1995 and its first six-win season
since 1985 with a 21-7 victory over Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon
in Greensboro, N.C. The Generals (6-4) amassed 293 yards of total offense
while holding the Pride (2-8) to just 69 total yards, including -9 yards
in the second half. Greensboro took a 7-0 lead 53 seconds into the second
quarter when Dallas Daniels picked up the ball off a blocked punt and
returned it 15 yards for a touchdown. Washington and Lee tied the score at 7-7 with 9:34 remaining
in the second quarter when sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte,
N.C./Charlotte Country Day) rushed for a six-yard touchdown. Sophomore
placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) extended the
Generals' lead to 10-7 on a 25-yard field goal with 5:38 remaining in
the first half. Long kicked a 35-yard field goal with 1:53 left in the
third quarter to give W&L a 13-7 advantage. The Generals closed
out the scoring with 8:41 remaining on a 3-yard touchdown run by junior
running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall). Junior quarterback
Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) completed a pass to Ward
to convert the two-point conversion. Tweardy finished the game 24-of-30 for 153 yards and Lackett
rushed for 38 yards on 13 carries and the one touchdown. Senior wide
receiver Taylor Callaham (Atlanta, Ga./McDonogh) caught six balls for
76 yards while Ward hauled in six passes for 41 yards and rushed for
19 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Junior linebacker Brian Gallagher (Potomac, Md./Good Counsel)
paced the defense with eight tackles and two of the Generals' six sacks.
Freshman defensive end Bryant Fulk (Oceanside, Calif./St. Augustine)
also had eight tackles plus a sack. The Pride was led by quarterback Justin Roberson, who
completed 5-of-16 passes for 44 yards and an interception. Quentin Caldwell
rushed 10 times for 31 yards and Damon Day caught two passes for 15
yards. Defensively, Brad Curtis and Tyler Gladden each had nine
tackles while Dennis Stokes chipped in with eight tackles. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL DEFEATS EMORY & HENRY, 24-20 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior tailback Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall)
took a screen pass 30 yards for a touchdown with 32 seconds remaining
to lift the Washington and Lee football team to a 24-20 win over Emory
& Henry on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The victory gives W&L
four ODAC wins for the first time since the 1985 season. After forcing an E&H punt, the Generals (5-4, 4-2) started the game-winning
drive on their own 44-yardline with 59 seconds remaining. Junior quarterback
Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) started the drive with a pair
of completions to sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte
Country Day) totaling 26 yards, then flipped the screen to Lackett who
broke several tackles on his way to the end zone. The Wasps (3-6, 2-3) opened the scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by
sophomore quarterback Todd Woods (Radford, Va./Radford) at the 9:27 mark
of the first quarter. The extra-point was no good. W&L tied the game at 6-6 with 12:33 remaining in the first half as
Tweardy found Ward on a 43-yard scoring strike. The extra point was also
no good. Woods scored again on a 1-yard touchdown run with 8:13 remaining in
the second quarter, but the Generals retaliated on a 9-yard pass from
Tweardy to junior wide-out Clark Kensinger (Columbia, S.C./Oakwood) with
4:55 remaining in the half. The extra point again failed and the Wasps
took a 13-12 lead into halftime. The Generals took an 18-13 lead on a 50-yard touchdown run by freshman
running back Thomas Hubka (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine) on the first
possession of the second half, but the Wasps then assumed a 20-18 lead
on a 7-yard scoring strike from Woods to sophomore wide receiver Brennan
Stewart (Shawsville, Va./Eastern Montgomery) with 7:52 left in the third
quarter. W&L had an opportunity to take the lead on a 25-yard field goal by
sophomore placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) with
2:33 remaining in the game, but the kick sailed wide left. The Generals
defense then forced the E&H punt setting up the winning drive. Tweardy led the W&L offense by completing 21-of-37 passes for a career-high
275 yards and three touchdowns. His 21 completions give him 186 for the
season, a new W&L record. Ward caught six passes for 101 yards and
a score, while Hubka rushed four times for 57 yards and a score. Lackett
rushed 12 times for 58 yards and caught two passes for 36 yards and the
winning score. Senior linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F.
Austin) paced the defense with 11 tackles and two fumble recoveries. The
Generals had three more sacks, setting a school record for sacks in a
season (37). E&H was led by Woods, who completed 24-of-41 passes for 307 yards
and one touchdown. He was intercepted once, breaking a school-record string
of 200 passes without an interception. Stewart caught eight passes for
133 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore wide receiver Jerad Jackson
(Big Stone Gap, Va./Powell Valley) snared eight balls for 113 yards, his
fifth-straight game with 100 yards receiving. Junior linebacker Anthony
Boyd (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) led the defense with seven tackles
and a half sack. Washington and Lee finishes its season on Saturday at Greensboro College.
The game begins at 1:00 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO BRIDGEWATER, 34-7 BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Sophomore tailback Winston Young rushed for 95 yards
and two touchdowns on 14 carries to lead Bridgewater past Washington and
Lee, 34-7, in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Jopson Field. A pair of Young touchdown runs sandwiched around a 60-yard scoring strike
from senior quarterback Brandon Wakefield to sophomore wide receiver Blake
Warring gave the Eagles a 21-0 lead that they carried into the half. The Eagles (6-2, 4-0) extended their lead to 34-0 on a pair of Wakefield
touchdown passes, before the Generals (4-4, 3-2) got on the board with
a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Hunter Dawkins (Charlotte,
N.C./Charlotte Country Day) to freshman wide receiver Jack Martin (Princeton,
N.J./Hun School) with 1:56 remaining in the game. W&L racked up 322 yards of total offense in the game, but could not
offset three turnovers and four failed fourth down conversions in Bridgewater
territory. Junior quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) completed
26-of-39 passes for 219 yards for W&L, but was picked off three times.
Dawkins completed 6-of-9 passes for 55 yards and one score, while sophomore
wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) caught
11 passes for 85 yards and rushed five times for 13 yards. Martin hauled
in seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. Senior defensive lineman
Chris Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y./LaSalle) led the W&L defense
with eight tackles. Bridgewater was led by Young's rushing effort. Wakefield completed 14-of-28
passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, while junior defensive back
Adrian Herndon and senior linebacker Cameron Garvin each posted seven
tackles. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Emory &
Henry for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL DEFEATS GUILFORD, 41-14 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte
Country Day) totaled 203 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to propel
the Washington and Lee football team to a 41-14 win over Guilford on Saturday
afternoon at Wilson Field. Ward caught seven passes for 61 yards and a touchdown, rushed eight times
for 34 yards and racked up 108 kick return yards, including an 86-yard
touchdown return in the third quarter. For Ward it was his second kick
return for a touchdown in the past two weeks, tying the W&L record
for kickoff return touchdowns for a season (2) and career (2). The Generals (4-3, 3-1) jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on a
1-yard touchdown run by sophomore fullback Ryan Sullivan (New Providence,
N.J./New Providence) and a 17-yard touchdown reception by sophomore wide
receiver Garrett LeRose (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central). W&L added
to its lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Greg Tweardy
(Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) with 11:08 remaining in the third quarter,
but Guilford answered as sophomore running back Branden Lindsey (Reidsville,
N.C./Rockingham County) scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from sophomore
quarterback Chris Gammon (Graham, N.C./Graham) to cut the lead to 20-7
with 7:20 remaining in the third period. Ward then responded with his 86-yard kickoff return on the ensuing kickoff
and, sandwiched around a 1-yard touchdown reception by GC sophomore wide
receiver Chris Barnette (Semora, N.C./Person), caught a 22-yard touchdown
pass from Tweardy for a 34-14 lead. Sophomore running back Will Hatfield
(Madison, W.Va./Scott) capped the scoring on a 7-yard touchdown run with
4:17 remaining in the game. Ward led the Generals offense, while Tweardy completed 17-of-26 passes
for 192 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for nine yards and a
touchdown. Senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Atlanta, Ga./McDonogh)
caught four passes for 81 yards, including a 49-yard reception to set
up the game's opening score. Senior linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen
F. Austin) paced the defense with nine tackles and a sack. Guilford (0-7, 0-3) was led by Gammon, who completed a career-high 17
passes (33 att.) for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver
Micah Rushing (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) caught five passes for 53 yards
and freshman defensive back Bryan Cook (Hayesville, N.C./Hayesville) led
the defense with seven tackles and an interception. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater
for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL FALLS TO NO. 22 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, 31-28 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore wide receiver
Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) recorded 263 all-purpose
yards and four touchdowns, but it was not enough as the Generals fell
to 22nd-ranked Hampden-Sydney, 31-28, on Saturday at Wilson Field. W&L (3-3, 2-1) fought back from a 31-14 deficit late
in the third quarter on a pair of Ward touchdowns, one coming on a 31-yard
reception and another on a 6-yard run with 3:51 remaining in the game.
W&L forced a Tiger punt on the ensuing possession and took over on
the 50-yard line with 50 seconds remaining, but junior quarterback Greg
Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) was intercepted on the first play
of the series, allowing Hampden-Sydney to run out the clock for the victory. The Tigers (5-1, 3-1) racked up 467 yards of total offense
led by junior quarterback J.D. Ricca (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's), who
completed 17-of-30 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Senior tailback
C.W. Clemmons (Covington, Va./Alleghany) rushed for 118 yards and one
touchdown on 29 carries, while junior wide receiver Brian Rolander (Exmore,
Va./Broadwater) caught five passes for 153 yards, including a 63-yard
touchdown reception from Ricca. Junior linebacker Wes Hall (Roanoke, Va./Cave
Spring) paced the Tigers' defense with five tackles. Ward led the Generals with his career day, which included
an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He caught six passes for 112
yards and two touchdowns, rushed four times for eight yards, and totaled
143 yards on four kickoff returns, just three shy of the school record.
Tweardy completed 21-of-37 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, but
was intercepted twice. Senior nose tackle Chris Caramore (East Greenbush,
N.Y./LaSalle) led the defense with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts
Guilford for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL SHUTS OUT CATHOLIC, 22-0 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Washington and Lee football team
recorded its second straight shutout with a 22-0 win over Catholic University
on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. It was the first time since
1982 that the Generals have posted back-to-back shutouts. That season,
they shutout Catholic 41-0 followed by a 6-0 blanking of Georgetown. The Generals (3-2, 2-0) took a 3-0 lead on a 42-yard field
goal by sophomore placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military)
with 8:44 remaining in the first quarter. Long then connected from 26
yards out with 12:14 left in the second quarter to give W&L a 6-0
lead which it would take into halftime. After halftime, the Generals broke the game open by scoring
16 points in the third quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte,
N.C./Charlotte Country Day) started the scoring spree on a 19-yard touchdown
run with 8:43 left in the quarter. Ward would finish the game with four
carries for 35 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a career-high 11
passes for 84 yards. W&L extended its advantage to 16-0 with 4:35 remaining
in the quarter on a 24-yard field goal by Long. Catholic fumbled the ensuing
kickoff and the Generals recovered the ball on the Cardinals' 29 yard
line. On the very next play, W&L junior running back Michael Lackett
(Allenwood, N.J./Wall) hit senior wide receiver John Barnwell (Charlestown,
S.C./Porter-Gaud) on a 29-yard strike to give the Generals a 22-0 lead.
The two-point conversion failed producing the final score. The W&L defense recorded five sacks and held the Cardinals
to just 116 yards of total offense. The Generals now have 30 sacks on
the season and are just five shy of the school record of 35 sacks. Offensively, W&L was led by junior quarterback Greg
Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), who completed 27-of-42 passes
for 246 yards. Lackett rushed 17 times for 51 yards and senior wide receiver
Taylor Callaham (Atlanta, Ga./McDonough) caught eight balls for 115 yards. Freshman defensive back Kyle Luby (Dallas, Texas/Highland
Park) notched a team-high 11 tackles and junior defensive end Liam Murray
(Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) had eight tackles. Catholic (2-3, 1-1) was paced by running back Ed Smith,
who rushed for 54 yards on 15 carries. Quarterback Anthony Durham completed
15-of-25 passes for 84 yards and wide receiver Frank Lynch caught six
passes for 65 yards. Anthony DelBorrell made 10 tackles and Ryan Parrish
chipped in with nine tackles. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it
hosts Hampden-Sydney. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL SHUTS OUT RANDOLPH-MACON, 17-0 LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee defense recorded
a school-record 10 sacks in posting a 17-0 Homecoming shutout victory
over Randolph-Macon in ODAC football action on Saturday at Wilson Field. The Generals (2-2, 1-0) limited Macon to just -6 yards rushing
and 119 yards of total offense in the contest. Following an interception by sophomore linebacker Robert
Foster (Brentwood, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) at the R-MC 23-yardline, the
Generals got on the board with 7:24 remaining in the first quarter as
junior running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall) scored on a
9-yard run. W&L added to its lead on a 22-yard field goal by sophomore
placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) with 11:56 remaining
in the second quarter and entered the half with a 10-0 lead. The Generals' defense then scored for the second time in
three weeks as Foster forced a fumble on a sack, which was picked up by
junior safety Stuart Swann (Macon, Ga./Woodberry Forest) and returned
49 yards for a score with 6:59 remaining in the third quarter. Foster finished the day with eight tackles, a school-record
tying five sacks, one interception and a forced fumble. Senior linebacker
Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) notched a team-high nine
tackles and two sacks, while Swann added four tackles, two sacks, and
his return for a touchdown. Offensively, the Generals were led by Lackett, who rushed
for 78 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Junior quarterback Greg Tweardy
(Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) completed 18-of-28 passes for 111 yards. Randolph-Macon (2-3, 1-1) was paced by sophomore running
back Sam Robinson (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry), who rushed for 53 yards
on 11 carries. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Bowles (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin
County) completed 18-of-33 passes for 125 yards, but was intercepted three
times. Sophomore defensive end Chris Marshburn (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess
Anne) led the defense with nine tackles and two sacks. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels
to Catholic for a 1:00 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL DROPS 28-23 DECISION TO CENTRE COLLEGE DANVILLE, Ky. -- Senior quarterback Brian Behrendt completed
28-of-40 passes for a school-record 377 yards and three touchdowns and
senior wide receiver David Crowley caught eight passes for a school-record
206 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Centre College football
team to a 28-23 win over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon in Danville,
Ky. The Generals (1-2) took a 7-0 lead with 7:12 remaining in
the first quarter on a 2-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Greg
Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) to senior wide receiver Taylor
Callaham (Atlanta, Ga./McDonogh). Centre (2-2) evened the score at 7-7
just one minute into the second quarter on a 97-yard strike from Behrendt
to Crowley. W&L scored the next 10 points on a 3-yard touchdown
run by junior running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township)
and a 36-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Ben Long (Frankford, W. Va./Hargrave
Military Academy) with 6:08 left in the first half. The Colonels replied with 14 points in the final three minutes
of the half, including a 17-yard run by sophomore running back Nick Warren
with 32 seconds left, to take a 21-17 lead into the locker room. Centre extended its lead to 28-17 with 14:42 remaining
in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Behrendt to Warren. W&L closed to within 28-23 with 5:45 left on a 17-yard
strike from Tweardy to Callaham, but the two-point conversion failed producing
the final score. Tweardy finished the game 18-of-34 for 234 yards, two touchdowns,
and two interceptions while Callaham had eight receptions for 94 yards
and two touchdowns. Lackett rushed 22 times for 81 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the Generals were led by junior defensive back
Stuart Swann (Macon, Ga./Woodberry Forest), who notched a team-high 11
tackles. Junior defensive end Liam Murray (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) recorded
10 tackles while freshman defensive back Kyle Luby (Dallas, Texas/Highland
Park) had five tackles and two of the Generals' four sacks. For Centre, Warren rushed 20 times for 90 yards and a touchdown
while catching eight balls for 81 yards and a touchdown. Junior Taylor
Holland made a team-high 10 tackles while seniors Jarrod Zywien and Nathan
Fell chipped in with nine tackles apiece. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it
hosts ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon. The game is slated to begin at 1:30 pm. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL SHUTS OUT SEWANEE, 12-0 LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee football team set
a school record with nine quarterback sacks and held Sewanee to just 132
yards of total offense in producing a 12-0 shutout victory over the Tigers
on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The shutout was W&L's first since a 6-0 win over Greensboro
during the 2002 season. In addition to the sacking the quarterback nine
times, the Generals also limited the Tigers to just five yards rushing
on 44 carries. The Generals (1-1) won the field position battle early
and got on the scoreboard first when junior quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel
Park, Pa./Bethel Park) found sophomore fullback Ryan Sullivan (New Providence,
N.J./New Providence) on a 1-yard scoring strike with 7:43 remaining in
the second quarter. The extra point was blocked and W&L entered the
half leading 6-0. W&L's defense protected the lead until it provided the
clincher when freshman defensive back Kyle Harvey (Columbia, S.C./Richland
Northeast) picked off a pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown

score since the 1998 season and the first interception return for a touchdown
since the 1992 campaign. The subsequent two-point conversion failed giving
the Generals a 12-0 lead which they would not relinquish. Offensively, W&L was led by Tweardy, who completed 21-of-32
passes for 107 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Junior running
back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township) rushed for 53 yards
on 19 carries, while senior wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Atlanta, Ga./McDonogh)
caught five passes for 51 yards. Defensively, the Generals were paced by Harvey, who notched
five tackles, two sacks, and the interception return for a touchdown.

to Centre College for a 1:30 pm contest. -- GENERALS -- W&L FOOTBALL DROPS SEASON-OPENER, 23-8, TO ALFRED ALFRED, N.Y. -- The Washington and Lee football team held
Alfred University to just 267 yards of total offense, but gained just
148 yards itself in falling to the Saxons, 23-8, on Saturday afternoon
in Alfred, N.Y. The Generals (0-1) got on the board first when an Alfred
punt snap went out of the back of the end zone with 12:32 remaining in
the first quarter. W&L held the lead until Alfred's Chris Reynolds
nailed a 30-yard field goal to make the score 3-2 with 4:38 remaining
in the opening period. Reynolds booted two more field goals in the second
quarter, one of 26 yards and another from 31 yards to give the Saxons
(1-0) a 9-2 halftime edge. After a scoreless third quarter, the Saxons scored the
game's first touchdown as Chaz Bruce scored on a 31-yard run with 14:30
remaining. Bruce then improved the lead to 23-2 on a 40-yard touchdown
run with 7:03 remaining, before the Generals answered on a 12-yard touchdown
strike from junior quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park)
to junior wide receiver Clark Kensinger (Columbia, S.C./Oakwood) with
1:42 remaining. The PAT attempt failed producing the final score. W&L was led by Tweardy, who completed 17-of-42 passes
for 157 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Senior wide receiver
Taylor Callaham (Atlanta, Ga./McDonogh) caught six passes for 75 yards,
while junior running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township)
