Eddie Cameron '24
A native of West Virginia, Edmund M. (Eddie) Cameron entered Washington
and Lee in the fall of 1920. A three-year letterman in both football and
basketball, Eddie also served as captain of both teams and was selected
as a fullback to the All-South Atlantic team. At Washington and Lee he
was vice president of the athletic council, president of the freshman
council , and president of the monogram club. He was also elected to Omicron
Delta Kappa, the national leadership fraternity, in his sophomore year--an
unusual honor.
Eddie had a distinguished athletic career after Washington and Lee as
well. He coached Duke University's Blue Devils to several basketball championships
and served as a longtime assistant to Duke's legendary football coach,
Wallace Wade. Eddie helped lead the Blue Devils to several football titles
and one Sugar Bowl victory during World War II. He succeeded Wade as athletic
director and remained in that position until 1972. During his tenure at
Duke, he served as chairman of the basketball committees of the Southern
and Atlantic Coast conferences,
helping to build their tournaments to national prominence. He was inducted
into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1976.
