2000 Washington and Lee Men's Lacrosse Summaries


W&L 17, Guilford 3; April 15, 2000 -- Greensboro, N.C.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and sophomore Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) each notched three goals and two assists in leading Washington and Lee to a 17-3 victory over Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

W&L (10-1, 4-0 ODAC) struck first in the contest when Barnett converted off a feed from Hackney at the 11:43 mark of the first period. The Quakers quickly retaliated, tying the score at 1-1 on a Nate Goodman goal just 1:31 later. Senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) once again put W&L ahead when he connected for an unassisted goal at the 4:03 mark of the opening stanza. With just one second left in the quarter, junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) beat the buzzer with a goal off a Hackney assist, propelling the Generals to a 3-1 lead. W&L would increase the margin to 5-1 at the half.

Guilford (2-8, 0-5 ODAC) pulled within 5-2 with a goal by Colin Smith to open the second half, but the Generals quickly dismissed any upset hopes by the Quakers, scoring 10 unanswered goals for a 15-2 cushion with 10:31 left in the game. From there, W&L eased to the 14-goal victory.

W&L will return to action on Monday, April 17, when it hosts Whittier in a 3:30 pm non-conference affair.

W&L 14, Western Maryland 2; April 12, 2000 -- Westminster, Md.

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Senior attacker Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) scored six goals in leading the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 14-2 win over Western Maryland College on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior attacker Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) opened the scoring just 1:25 into the contest when he blew a shot past Western Maryland goalkeeper Brian Nottingham for a 1-0 Generals' lead. Just nine seconds later, freshman Thomas Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) scored his first career goal to move the margin to 2-0. W&L would lead 5-0 after the first period. Brown took over the game in the second quarter, as he scored four of the Generals' five goals en route to a 10-0 halftime lead. The lead would increase to as much as 13-0 with 14:15 remaining before W&L would cruise to the 14-2 victory.

Aside from Brown's heroics, W&L was led in scoring by Dugan, who amassed a goal and three assists. Juniors Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored two goals apiece for the Generals, while sophomore John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) added a goal and an assist. Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) played 44 scoreless minutes in goal for W&L, which improved to 9-1 on the season with the win.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday, April 15, when they travel to Guilford for a 1:00 pm Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest.

W&L 9, Lynchburg 5; April 9, 2000 -- Lynchburg, Va.

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored three goals and junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored two goals and added an assist as fifth-ranked Washington and Lee defeated 15th-ranked Lynchburg, 9-5, in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon.

W&L took an early 1-0 lead with 4:00 gone-by in the first quarter as senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) picked up a failed clear attempt by the Hornets and scored unassisted in front of the goal.

Lynchburg would then answer as junior attackman Josh Paris (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) scored off an assist from junior attackman Steve Morris (Alexandria, Va./Edison) just 42 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1.

W&L (8-1, 3-0) surged to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period as junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) scored off an assist from Norton and senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) scored an unassisted goal.

After the two teams traded goals, the Hornets (6-3, 3-2) tied the score at 4-4 with 3:06 remaining in the second quarter as sophomore midfielder Rob Onda (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) scored a pair of goals, one assisted by freshman midfielder Andy Sinclair (Maitland, Fla./Winterpark).

However, W&L would go into the halftime with a 5-4 lead as Dougherty scored his second goal of the day with 1:49 left before the break.

The Generals scored the first two goals of the second half to assume a 7-4 advantage with 1:29 gone-by in the half as Norton and Dugan notched unassisted tallies. After a goal by Lynchburg junior midfielder Jason Jeffries (Alexandria, Va./Edison) which cut the Generals' lead to 7-5 with 5:11 left in the third quarter, Dugan and Norton struck again as each tallied a goal in the final 8:40 of the game to put the contest out of reach.

Junior goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Towson) made seven saves for W&L, while senior netminder Mike Huck (Towson/Loch Raven) posted 12 saves for the Hornets.

For the game, W&L outshot Lynchburg, 40-22, and held a 44-27 advantage in ground balls.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday afternoon as it travels to Westminster, Md., for a 3:30 pm contest with Western Maryland.

W&L 16, Roanoke 12; March 29, 2000 -- Lexington, Va.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored six goals and assisted on another to help lead fourth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 16-12 win over Roanoke in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Generals surged to an early 5-2 lead after the first quarter, however, the Maroons charged back in the second quarter to with five straight goals, two by freshman attackman Andy Bonasera (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), to take a 7-5 lead with 8:10 remaining in the half. W&L then responded with three unanswered goals of its own to claim an 8-7 lead with 5:29 left in the second quarter. Roanoke again answered, knotting the score at 8-8 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Daryl Pinto (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) off an assist from Bonasera with 3:17 remaining in the half.

The Generals (7-1, 2-0) climbed back in front by a 9-8 count as junior midfielder Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) tallied a goal off an assist from senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) with 2:53 left in the half. That score would hold as both teams headed to the locker rooms.

The Maroons (3-3, 1-1) tied the game at 9-9 with the first tally of the second half as senior midfielder Jim Cappellett (Little River, S.C./Vestal) scored off an assist from Pinto 4:21 into the third quarter.

However, W&L senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) answered with an unassisted goal just 1:35 later to give the Generals the lead for good at 10-9.

The Maroons climbed back to within one goal at 12-11 with 12:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Dugan scored three goals after that point to seal the win for W&L.

For W&L, Dougherty notched one goal and four assists on the day, while junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson), and freshman midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) each tallied two goals. Junior goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made five saves in goal.

Bonasera led the Maroons with five goals and three assists, while junior attackman David Taylor (Butler, Md./St. Paul's), junior midfielder Neil Adam (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), and Cappellett each scored two goals. Freshman goalie Tim Morse (Santa Fe, N.M./Tabor Academy) stopped 12 W&L shots in goal.

For the game, the Generals outshot Roanoke, 51-23, and won 25 of 32 faceoffs. Washington and Lee will return to action on April 9 as it travels to Lynchburg for a 2:00 pm contest with the Hornets.

W&L 22, Virginia Wesleyan 4; March 25, 2000 -- Lexington, Va.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) accounted for one goal and five assists to help lead fifth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 22-4 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Generals surged out to a quick 5-0 lead with 4:22 gone-by in the first quarter. The Blue Marlins had not possessed the ball on their offensive end for even one possession to that point. The lead would grow to 7-0 with 2:23 remaining in the opening quarter before Virginia Wesleyan senior midfielder Art Hamilton (Alexandria, Va./Robert E. Lee) got the Blue Marlins (3-4, 0-1) on the board with an unassisted goal with 19 seconds remaining in the first.

From there, the Generals (6-1, 1-0) would go on to reel off six goals in a row to assume a 13-1 lead with 4:25 remaining in the half before Hamilton scored another unassisted tally to make the score 13-2 at the half. The Generals would cruise from there for the 18-goal win.

Senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) notched four goals and two assists, while junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored four goals. Junior midfielder Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes), and senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) each chipped in with three goals for the Generals. Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola), senior Dan Grattan (Vienna, Va./Marshall), and freshman Brandon Ross (Harwood, Md./St. Albans) combined to stop nine shots in goal for W&L.

Virginia Wesleyan was led by Hamilton, who scored three goals. Sophomore goalie Jeff Trench (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) posted 19 saves for the Marlins.

Washington and Lee held a 59-19 advantage in shots and won 21 of 27 faceoffs during the game.

The Generals will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they host arch-rival Roanoke in a 3:30 pm contest.

W&L 17, Franklin & Marshall 10; March 18, 2000 -- Lancaster, Pa.

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Junior attackman Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored four goals and dished out two assists to help lead the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 17-10 win over Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (5-1) opened the scoring just :34 seconds into the contest when senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) scored off an assist from senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola). The Diplomats retaliated, tying the contest on a goal from Greg Iury at the 8:39 mark. Just :51 seconds later, Norton put the Generals ahead to stay, tallying an unassisted goal. Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) found the net for the first of his four goals just :12 seconds after Norton, increasing the lead to 3-1. The teams then traded goals, ending the first period with Washington and Lee ahead by a count of 4-2.

W&L poured it on in the second quarter, tallying seven goals en route to an 11-5 lead at halftime. Dugan opened the second half with back-to-back goals, giving W&L what proved to be its' largest lead of the contest at 13-5 with 13:36 remaining in the third. From there, W&L would cruise to the win.

Dugan, Norton, and junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) led the Generals with four goals apiece. Brown notched three goals, while Dougherty added one goal and four assists. Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made seven saves in goal for the Generals.

F&M (1-3) was led by Bryan Nolan and Brendan Bigos, each of whom amassed two goals and one assist. Bob Michel and David Kahn combined to stop 14 W&L shots in goal for the Diplomats. W&L will return to action on Saturday, March 25, when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan in a 1:30 pm contest on Wilson Field.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) tallied a career-high nine points on six goals and three assists to help lead fifth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 23-0 win over Dickinson on Wednesday afternoon.

The Generals (4-1) outshot the Red Devils (0-3) 78-7 in producing their first shutout since a 23-0 win over Shenandoah during the 1993 season.

Brown got W&L off to an early start by notching four first quarter goals, two off assists from junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall). Norton also collected a pair of goals during the opening period to give W&L a 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

The lead swelled to 14-0 at the half as Brown and Norton kept the pressure on. Norton notched a goal and an assist in the second quarter, while Brown tallied one assist. W&L would rest its regulars in the second half in producing the 23-goal win.

Senior attackman Andrew Jones (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) and junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) each totaled three goals. Dugan also added an assist in the contest.

Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola), senior Dan Grattan (Vienna, Va./Marshall), and freshman Brandon Ross (Harwood, Md./St. Albans) combined in goal to produce the shutout. Each made two saves.

Sophomore James Rankin (Southport, Conn./Middlesex) stopped 20 shots in 56 minutes of action in goal for the Red Devils.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Franklin & Marshall for a 2:00 pm contest.

Gettysburg 6, W&L 4; March 12, 2000 -- Lexington, Va.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Fourth-ranked Gettysburg held second-ranked Washington and Lee to just eight shots and one goal in the second half in defeating the Generals, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The game marked the first time W&L has lost when allowing eight goals or less since the 1993 season.

Washington and Lee struck first in the contest as sophomore midfielder Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored off an assist from senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) with 8:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Bullets then knotted the score at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Mark Pollak (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) just 1:12 later. Gettysburg then took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter as sophomore midfielder Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored off an assist from senior attackman Ross Garretson (New Hope, Pa./Germantown Academy) with 1:07 left in the opening quarter.

W&L would strike just 1:59 into the second quarter as junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored off an assist from junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) to tie the game at 2-2. Gettysburg then retaliated with 9:30 remaining in the first half as junior midfielder Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, Md./Woodberry Forest) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Pete Milliman (Rochester, N.Y./Canterbury) to give the Bullets a 3-2 advantage. However, the Generals (3-1) would knot the score again as Dugan found the back of the net off an assist from Dougherty. The score would remain 3-3 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Once again, Gettysburg (2-0) struck first and took a 4-3 lead with 9:55 remaining in the third quarter as Garretson tallied an unassisted goal. The Generals then tied the game again, this time on a goal by senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) off an assist from sophomore midfielder David Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) as time expired in the third quarter.

Gettysburg once again forged ahead (5-4) with just 1:04 gone in the fourth quarter as sophomore attackman Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, Conn./John Jay) scored off an assist from senior defensemen Adam Aiello (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville). The Bullets then held the Generals scoreless and added an insurance goal by Pearce with 46 second left to walk away with the 6-4 win, their first against the Generals in their last five tries.

Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made 12 saves in goal for the Generals, while senior Andrew Barter (North Brookfield, Mass./Tabor Academy) stopped nine shots for Gettysburg.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Fifth-ranked Washington and Lee surged to a 7-1 halftime advantage and held off a furious second half rally by sixth-ranked Washington College for a 10-8 win over the Shoremen on Saturday afternoon. The win makes head coach Jim Stagnitta (109-39) the winningest lacrosse coach in W&L history, surpassing Jack Emmer (1973-83).

W&L (3-0) went up top 4-0 with 13:24 remaining in the first half on a pair of goals by senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) and one each by senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) and junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall).

Washington (0-1) retaliated on a goal by senior midfielder J.D. Radebaugh (Freeland, Md./Boys' Latin) off an assist from senior midfielder Kevin Dorst (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) with 6:33 left in the half to cut the W&L lead to 4-1.

The Generals then reeled off three goals in the final 4:49, one by sophomore midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll), and two by Brown, to take to 7-1 halftime lead.

Washington then began its comeback. Senior midfielder Owen Mulhern (Havertown, Pa./Trinity-Pawling) scored a goal off an assist from sophomore attackman Jon Fellows (Millington, Md./Kent County) with 12:57 left in the third period and Radebaugh added a pair of goals in the next 10:52 to cut the Generals lead to just 7-4 with 2:05 left in the third. However, Brown would add another goal for W&L with :35 remaining in the period to give the Generals an 8-4 edge heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, W&L struck first as junior midfielder Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored off an assist from Norton with 13:33 remaining to give the Generals a 9-4 lead.

The Shoremen came back with a goal by Fellows just 18 seconds later and a goal by Radebaugh just 18 seconds after that to slice the W&L lead to 9-6. Mulhern then tallied his second goal of the day with 10:59 remaining and freshman attackman Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) scored off an assist from Dorst with 9:24 remaining to make the score 9-8 in favor of W&L.

Dougherty notched his third goal of the day with 7:14 remaining to give W&L a 10-8 lead and the defense would stiffen to hold the Shoremen scoreless for the duration of the game. Dougherty led the Generals with three goals and three assists, while Brown tallied four goals. Norton notched one goal and three assists, while junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) added a pair of assists. Junior goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) notched eight saves in goal.

Radebaugh scored four goals and Mulhern totaled two goals and an assist to lead the Shoremen. Sophomores John Chrismer (Darlington, Md./John Carroll) and Ray Pagano (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) combined to make nine saves in goal.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Sunday, Mar. 12, as it hosts third-ranked Gettysburg in a 1:00 pm contest.

W&L 23, Greensboro 7; Feb. 26, 2000 -- Greensboro, N.C.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored five goals and dished out five assists to help lead the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 23-7 win over Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (2-0) opened the game with three consecutive goals, two by Dugan, for a 3-0 lead just 6:35 into the contest. A John Neff goal got the Pride on the board, but the Generals would answer with three straight scores en route to an 11-2 halftime advantage.

Dugan scored the first two goals of the second half, putting W&L ahead 13-2 with 8:57 remaining in the third period. From there, the Generals would cruise to the 16-goal victory.

Junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) chipped in four goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) added three goals. Other Generals with multiple goals included senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) with two goals and an assist along with junior attackman Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and sophomore midfielder Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) with two apiece.

Greensboro (0-1) was led by Bill Zopp, who scored three goals. Matt Riordan chipped in with two goals of his own.

Three W&L goaltenders combined to make 8 saves for the Generals.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday, March 4, as it hosts Washington College in a 1:30 pm contest at Wilson Field.

W&L 17, Elmira 7; Feb. 23, 2000 -- Lexington, Va.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored four goals and dished out two assists to help lead the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 17-7 win over Elmira College in the season-opener for both teams.

The Generals (1-0) surged to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before senior midfielder Sparky Brooks (Marblehead, Mass./Proctor) put Elmira on the board off an assist from senior attackman Jeff Franey (Burlington, Ont./Lord Elgin) with 1:46 remaining. However, the Generals would then score five consecutive goals, three by Dugan, to take a 9-1 lead with 9:59 left in the first half. W&L led 10-3 at the break.

The two teams traded a pair of goals in the third period, before the Generals went on a four-goal tear to take a 16-5 lead with 5:46 remaining in the game.

Senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) notched two goals and and four assists, while senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) tallied three goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) added two goals and an assist in the win.

Elmira (0-1) was led by Franey, who scored two goals and netted an assist. Senior attackman Pat Sullivan (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scored a pair of goals, while Brooks tallied one goal and an assist.

Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made 10 saves in goal for the Generals, while senior Darrern Burrell (Severn, Md./Meade) made 12 stops in goal for Elmira.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it travels to Greensboro College for a 1:00 pm match-up with the Pride.
