W&L INCHES CLOSER TO ODAC TITLE WITH A 15-7 WIN OVER LYNCHBURG (4/18)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Top-ranked Washington and Lee held Lynchburg without a shot and surged to a 7-0 lead in the first 17:30 of the game in posting a 15-7 win over the Hornets in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The win was the Generals' 16th ODAC victory in a row and set up a matchup with Hampden-Sydney on Saturday for the ODAC Championship and the accompanying NCAA Tournament bid.

Sophomore midfielder Tom Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) [Pictured to right] led the way for the Generals, tallying three goals and three assists and winning 19-of-24 faceoffs on the day. Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) totaled three goals and two assists, while senior attackman Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) notched two goals and one assist. Junior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) added two assists. Senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) posted six saves on the day.

Lynchburg (6-5, 3-2) was led by freshman attackman Kevin Reinecke (Crofton, Md./Arundel), who scored a game-high six goals. Freshman attackman Jeff Mullenix (Riva, Md./South River) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Freshman goalies Chris Johnson (Chantilly, Va./Centreville) and Nick Braun (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) combined to make five saves.

The Generals (11-0, 4-0) outshot Lynchburg by a 41-26 count and held the same advantage in ground balls.

Washington and Lee returns to action at Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. Faceoff is slated for 1:00 pm.

DUGAN SETS RECORD AS GENERALS ROLL OVER GUILFORD, 24-1 (4/14)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) [Pictured to right] became the Old Dominion Athletic Conference career scoring leader in helping top-ranked Washington and Lee to a 24-1 win over Guilford in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Dugan scored two goals and assisted on three others to break the record of 267 points held by Paul Tomick and Frank Smollen of Randolph-Macon. Dugan's total currently stands at 270 (170 g, 100 a).

The Generals (10-0, 3-0) led 10-0 at the half and held Guilford scoreless until 16 seconds remained in the third period when GC freshman attackman Josh Miller (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) scored off an assist from freshman attackman Rob Mallonee (Baltimore, Md./Sandy Spring Friends).

W&L was led by senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall), who tallied four goals and two assists. Senior position-mate Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) notched three goals and one assist, while junior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored two goals and dished out two assists. All told, 14 different players scored for the Generals.

Senior Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) recorded five saves in 45 minutes of action in front of the cage for W&L. Senior Anthony Roman (New York, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael's) posted 21 saves in net for the Quakers (4-6, 0-4).

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday afternoon as it hosts Lynchburg in an ODAC contest at 3:30 pm.

W&L LACROSSE BREEZES PAST GREENSBORO, 23-2 (4/4)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Top-ranked Washington and Lee placed 14 different players in the goal scoring column led by senior attackman Matt Dugan's (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) five goals in defeating Greensboro College, 23-2, in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (9-0) took an 18-0 lead over the game's first 35 minutes and out-shot the Pride (2-8) by a 53-9 count. Freshman midfielder Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) [Pictured to right] claimed his best game in a W&L uniform by totaling one goal and four assists on the day. Senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) tallied two goals and three assists, while junior middie John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) added three goals.

Greensboro got on the board at the 7:42 mark of the third quarter as sophomore attackman Ryan Potts (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored off an assist from freshman midfielder J.R. Harig (San Antonio, Texas/St. Mary's Hall). The Pride's final goal came at the 2:44 mark of the third quarter as senior midfielder Mars Anguiano (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) notched an unassisted tally.

In goal, senior Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola), freshman Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) and senior Bo Vaughan (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) combined to make four saves for W&L. Senior Mike Cappe (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and freshman Joe Prota (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) combined on 15 stops for Greensboro.

W&L DEFEATS NO. 17 MARYMOUNT, 11-5 (3/31)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) tallied one goal and a career-high five assists to lead top-ranked Washington and Lee past 17th-ranked Marymount, 11-5, in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals also received an outstanding effort from senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola), who recorded 15 saves on the day.

Marymount opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Sean McCauley (Monrovia, Md./Linganore) just 1:33 into the game. The Generals would answer back by scoring the game's next seven goals to assume a 7-1 lead with 10:11 remaining in the third period.

The Saints (7-3) responded by going on a three-goal spurt to cut the W&L lead to 7-4 with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter. Senior midfielder Stephen Milano (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) notched a pair of goals during the stretch.

However, the Generals (8-0) would take control of the game by scoring four more goals over the final 17:13 to walk away with the six-goal victory.

Senior midfielders Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) each found the net twice during the game. Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored one goal and assisted on another.

For Marymount, McCauley and Milano each scored two goals, while sophomore attackman Bobby Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) added another score. Junior goalie Justin Epstein (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) played a solid game in goal, recording 12 saves.

For the game, W&L outshot the Saints, 59-22, and won 13-of-18 faceoffs.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Greensboro. Faceoff will be at 3:30 pm.

W&L PICKS UP IMPORTANT ODAC VICTORY WITH 16-4 WIN OVER ROANOKE (3/28)

SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee outscored Roanoke, 12-1, over the final three periods and cruised to a 16-4 victory in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va.

Senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) did not allow a goal in the game's final 32:41 and made 13 saves on the day to secure the win for the Generals (7-0, 2-0 ODAC).

Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) gave W&L a 1-0 lead just 3:07 into the contest with an assist from junior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School). However, Roanoke (4-3, 0-2 ODAC) scored three out of the next four goals to take a 3-2 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first period. Freshman attackman Kris Davis (Parkton, Md./Hereford) tallied two goals in the stretch for RC.

The Generals responded with six unanswered goals led by two tallies from senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) to take a 8-3 lead with 2:56 left in the first half. Roanoke senior defenseman Mark Healey (Fitchburg, Mass./Tabor) notched a goal 15 seconds later to cut W&L's lead to 8-4 at halftime.

Senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored two consecutive goals to begin the third period and Washington and Lee outscored the Maroons, 8-0, in the second half to claim the 12-goal victory.

Dugan, Hackney and Norton led the way for W&L as the trio combined for 10 goals and five assists. Freshman midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) notched two goals, while Moore tallied one goal and added one assist. Junior defenseman Eric Kontargyris (Woodstock, Vt./Loomis Chaffee) also scored his first career goal in the third period.

W&L out-shot the Maroons, 54-20, and won 16 of the 21 faceoffs in the game. The Generals also held Roanoke scoreless in five extra-man opportunities.

NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior attacker Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored six goals and added three assists and senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) notched five goals and two assists to lead Washington and Lee to a 19-5 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

Senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) also tallied five points (4 goals, 1 assist) as the Generals improved to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

W&L stormed out to a 5-0 lead after one period as Norton and Hackney each scored two goals. Virginia Wesleyan's Andrew Voigt scored the first goal of the second period at the 12:14 mark to close the gap to 5-1, but the Generals scored four unanswered goals led by two tallies by Dugan and W&L held a 9-1 halftime lead.

Hackney found the net with 12:49 to play in the third period, while Dugan added two goals just 33 seconds apart as W&L outscored VWC (4-3, 0-1), 10-4, in the second half to claim the 14-goal victory.

Senior goalkeeper Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) made six saves in the net for Washington and Lee. The Generals out-shot the Blue Marlins, 48-18, and converted on 5-of-7 extra man opportunities.

WASHINGTON AND LEE DEFEATS FRANKLIN & MARSHALL, 15-4 (3/18)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored a career-high five goals and added an assist to help lead second-ranked Washington and Lee to a 15-4 win over 15th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Diplomats (4-1) scored the game's first goal at the 12:32 mark of the first quarter as senior midfielder Greg Ivry (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) notched an unassisted tally. The Generals (5-0) responded by scoring the next 10 goals en route to a 10-1 halftime advantage. Barnett scored four of his goals during the stretch as did senior attackman Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown). Burke totaled a career-high five goals on the day, including the game's final goal while laying on his back.

Franklin & Marshall scored the first two goals of the second half to cut the W&L lead to 10-3, but could get no closer than the seven-goal deficit.

Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) notched one goal and three assists and senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) added one goal and one assist. The Generals outshot the Diplomats 54-21 and limited F&M to just 14 successful clears in 24 attempts.

Ivry led F&M with two goals, while junior attackman Andrew Kuskowski (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) tallied a pair of assists. Senior David Kahn (Bethesda, Md./Landon) stopped 18 shots in goal.

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Washington and Lee jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 14-3 victory over Dickinson in men's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon in Carlisle, Pa.

Senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and senior attacker Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) both tallied three goals and added one assist as the Generals improved to 4-0 on the season.

Junior attacker Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) started the scoring in the first period with a goal at the 6:13 mark off an assist from Hackney. Barnett finished the day with two goals and one assist.

Hackney found the net at the 4:06 mark of the first period and freshman midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) scored two goals in 2:46 late in the first period to give W&L a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Generals tacked on six goals in the second period as Burke notched two scores and senior attacker Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) assisted on a pair of goals. Washington and Lee outscored Dickinson, 4-3, in the second half to secure the 11-goal victory. Senior goalkeeper Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) stopped all four shots he faced in 30 minutes of action.

Junior midfielder David Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) scored two goals for W&L, while junior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) and freshman midfielder Dustin Martin (Manilus, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) also collected one goal each.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Senior attacker Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored three goals, including the eventual game-winner to lift Washington and Lee to a 8-7 victory over fourth-ranked Gettysburg in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Gettysburg, Pa.

The Generals (3-0) got off to a quick start as senior attacker Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes), junior attacker Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Burke tallied goals in the first 4:19 of the first period and W&L led 3-0.

Gettysburg (2-1) fought back, however, with four unanswered goals to hold a 4-3 lead at the half. The Bullets increased the lead to 5-3 with 13:21 remaining in the third period on a goal by Jake Van Nostrand.

Washington and Lee cut the lead back to one after a goal by senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) with an assist from Barnett at the 11:26 mark of the third period.

Van Nostrand answered right back 2:29 later to give the Bullets a two-goal cushion once again.

The Generals then rallied for three goals in the final 4:44 of the third period and led 7-6 with 15 minutes to play. Senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), Dugan and Burke all notched goals in the three-goal stretch for W&L.

Burke found the net at with 10:14 to play in the game for his third tally of the game to give the Generals a 8-6 lead. Wed Cadman scored at the 7:40 mark for GC to cut the lead to one, but senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) kept the Bullets off the board in the closing minutes to preserve to 8-7 victory. Hays made seven saves on the day for W&L.

The Generals out-shot Gettysburg, 26-21, and won 12 of the 17 faceoffs in the contest.

W&L will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as it travels to Carlisle, Pa., to take on Dickinson College at 3:30 pm.

HACKNEY LEADS GENERALS TO 4-2 WIN OVER WASHINGTON (Md.) (3/3)

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) scored three goals, including the game-winner at the 11:07 mark of the fourth period, to lead Washington and Lee to a 4-2 victory over sixth-ranked Washington (Md.) on Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action in Chestertown, Md.

Washington (1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by junior midfielder Craig Rentsch (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) at the 8:25 mark and freshman midfielder Steve Berger (Jessup, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) at 6:20. Sophomore attacker Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) assisted on both goals.

Hackney found the net with 17 seconds left in the first period with an assist from senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) to cut the WC lead to 2-1. Norton then tied the game on an unassisted goal with 39 seconds left in the first half and the score was knotted, 2-2, at halftime.

Both squads were held scoreless until Hackney tallied the game-winner off an assist from junior attacker Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) in the final period. Hackney added the game's final goal with 3:04 left to play and the Generals prevailed, 4-2.

Senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) held Washington at bay the entire game by making 12 saves. WC goalie John Chrismer (Darlington, Md./John Carroll) also made 15 saves on the day. The Generals out-shot Washington, 35-24.

Washington and Lee (2-0) will return to action next Saturday, as it travels to Gettysburg for a 1:00 pm contest.

W&L DEFEATS ELMIRA, 16-3; DUGAN SETS SCHOOL SCORING RECORD (2/25)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tallied five goals and three assists to lead third-ranked Washington and Lee to a 16-3 win over Elmira in the season-opener for both teams.

Dugan's eight points helped him surpass Don Carroll's (1973-76) school-record total of 234 career points. He now has 235 points on 149 goals and 86 assists.

Elmira started the scoring at the 7:42 mark of the first period as sophomore midfielder Christopher Burt (Horseheads, N.Y./Williston-Northampton) scored an unassisted goal. However, W&L (1-0) answered 3:41 later as Dugan found the net with an unassisted tally. He again scored an unassisted goal at the 3:32 mark of the first period to give W&L a 2-1 lead and the Generals would go on to score the game's next 14 goals to take a 16-1 lead.

The Soaring Eagles (0-1) added a pair of goals in the final seven minutes to provide the final margin. The Generals outshot Elmira 53-13 in the game and EC was successful on just eight of 24 clear attempts.

Senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) notched three goals as did freshman attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall). Junior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) added a pair of goals, while senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) tallied one goal and two assists.

For Elmira, Burt, freshman midfielder Alexander Karoly (Brewster, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) and freshman attackman Bryan Duffey (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) all scored one goal. Junior midfielder Travis De Volt (Jeicho, Vt./Mt. Mansfield) and junior attackman Evan Pettit (Media, Pa./Penncrest) each totaled an assist.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to sixth-ranked Washington College for a 1:30 pm contest.
