W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO GETTYSBURG IN NCAA SEMIFINALS, 12-8
GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee men's
lacrosse team had its season end with a 12-8 loss at Gettysburg in the
NCAA Division III National Semifinals. The Generals conclude the 2002
campaign with an overall record of 14-4, while top-ranked Gettysburg advances
to next Sunday's NCAA Championship Game with a record of 17-1. The Bullets
will face the winner of Sunday's other semifinal between Middlebury and
Ithaca.
SCORING TEAM STATS W&L MEN'S LACROSSE DEFEATS WASHINGTON, 11-8, IN NCAA QUARTERFINALS CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse
team advanced to the NCAA Division III Semifinals with an 11-8 victory
at Washington College in quarterfinal action on Sunday afternoon. With
the win, the Generals advance to face Gettysburg in the national semifinals
next weekend. The Bullets advanced with a 7-5 victory over Salisbury on
Sunday afternoon.
SCORING GOALKEEPERS TEAM STATS W&L MEN'S LACROSSE DOWNS WIDENER, 13-8, IN NCAA TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior midfielder Rob Brown (Wilton,
Conn./Wilton) scored a career-high three goals and added two assists to
help lead the Generals past Widener in the first round of the NCAA men's
lacrosse tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field. The game featured a total of 19 penalties, including 13 called on W&L
for a total of 11 minutes. The Pioneers converted on 5-of-11 extra man
attempts. Widener (12-4) opened the scoring as junior midfielder Steve Littlewood
(Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored unassisted just 55 seconds
into the game. The Generals (13-3) responded with a three-goal run to
assume a 3-1 lead with 5:04 remaining in the opening quarter. Senior midfielder
John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) scored one goal and assisted on
another during the stretch. The Pioneers answered back to tie the game at 3-3 with 13:41 remaining
in the second quarter on goals by sophomore attackman Brian Manion (Malvern,
Pa./Episcopal) and senior attackman Mike Zolochik (Prospect Park, Pa./Monsignor
Bonner). The Generals regained the lead with 9:21 left in the second period as
Moore found the net off an assist from Brown. Brown then scored unassisted
with 5:31 left in the half for a 5-3 W&L lead. Manion answered with
another goal with 1:30 remaining in the half, but Brown found the net
again for the Generals with nine seconds remaining to give W&L a 6-4
lead at the break. W&L began the second half with a three-goal run to assume a 9-4 lead
with 9:51 remaining in the third quarter and never looked back in claiming
the five-goal victory. In addition to Brown's heroics, the Generals received two goals and two
assists from Moore, three goals from sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington,
Del./Tatnall) and one goal and two assists from freshman attackman Gavin
Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems,
Va./Woodberry Forest) notched 11 saves in goal. Widener was led by Zolochik's three goals and two assists, while Manion
added three goals and one assist. Junior Pat Carmack (Chantilly, Va./Gonzaga)
and sophomore Don Manard (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) each played 30
minutes in goal. Carmack posted nine saves, while Manard logged 10 stops. W&L will now travel to Washington College for a match-up with the Shoremen in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The game will be played on either Saturday or Sunday with a game time yet to be determined.
SCORING: GOALKEEPERS TEAM STATS W&L MEN'S LACROSSE ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH A 13-5 WIN OVER LIMESTONE LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee scored eight consecutive goals over
the second, third and fourth periods to secure a 13-5 win over Limestone
in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals, ranked fourth in Division III, raced out to a 4-0 in the
game's first 8:41 only to see the Saints, ranked third in Division II,
score four straight to knot the game at 4-4 with 8:06 remaining in the
second quarter. W&L (12-3) then rattled off three straight goals in the final 4:08
of the first half to hold a 7-4 edge at the break. The Generals continued
to expand their lead to 12-4 before Limestone sophomore attackman Jason
Randolph (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) scored his second goal of the game at
the 4:40 mark of the fourth period to make the score 12-5. Sophomore midfielder
Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) notched his second goal of the
game with 2:00 remaining to provide the final margin. Washington and Lee was led by sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington,
Del./Tatnall), who tallied three goals and one assist. Sophomore midfielder
Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), McNamara and senior
midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) all notched two goals,
while freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) added

for the Saints. Washington and Lee held a 37-33 advantage in shots and a 52-28 edge in
ground balls. The Generals will be in action again on Wednesday as they participate in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. W&L's seeding, opponent and game location will be revealed on Sunday at 6:30 pm.

lead and held on for a 14-12 win over third-seeded Lynchburg in the semifinals
of the ODAC men's lacrosse tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (10-3) will travel to top-seeded Hampden-Sydney for the championship
game on Saturday at 1:00 pm. The Tigers defeated fourth-seeded Roanoke,
12-10, in the other semifinal contest. Lynchburg (11-4) opened a 1-0 lead with 12:45 remaining in the first
quarter as junior midfielder Paul Venturella (Millersville, Md./Old Mill)
scored an extra-man goal off an assist from freshman attackman Billy McCulloch
(Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson). The Generals answered by scoring the game's
next eight goals to assume an 8-1 lead with 7:55 remaining in the second
quarter. Freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport),
sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) and senior attackman
Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) all scored two goals during the
run. The two teams exchanged goals for a 9-2 W&L lead at the half. The Generals maintained a 12-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter before
the Hornets made things interesting. Venturella opened the quarter with
his third goal of the game at the 12:29 mark before W&L sophomore
midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) found the net with
11:14 remaining to make the score 13-7. However, Lynchburg sophomore attackman
Brandon Childs (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) scored twice in 1:08 to cut
the Generals' lead to 13-9 with 4:13 remaining. Molinelli gave W&L a five-goal edge 14-9 with an unassisted tally
at the 3:58 mark which was answered by LC junior midfielder Kip Campbell
(Fork Union, Va./Fork Union Military) just 27 second later. Campbell scored
again with 57 seconds remaining to cut the score to 14-11 and McCulloch
tallied 18 seconds later to provide the final margin. W&L was led by by Barnett and Molinelli, who totaled three goals
and one assist each. Senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll)
added two goals and two assists. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry
Forest) stopped four shots in goal. Lynchburg was paced by McCulloch, who recorded three goals and three assists. Venturella amassed three goals and one assist, while Campbell tallied three goals. Sophomore goalie Chris Johnson (Chantilly, Va./Centreville) registered 10 saves in goal. W&L was whistled for nine penalties in the contest which the Hornets turned into four goals.

register a goal in an 18-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon
in ODAC men's lacrosse action. The Generals (9-3, 5-1) led just 1-0 following the opening quarter, but
went on to score the first seven goals of the second quarter en route
to an 8-1 halftime lead. Sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius)
led the way for W&L with four goals, while senior attackman Andrew
Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) totaled two goals and one assist. Sophomore

the Blue Marlins. Washington and Lee will return to action on Tuesday as it hosts third-seeded Lynchburg in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament. Game time is yet to be determined. The Generals are the tournament's second seed.

(Farmville, Va./Prince Edward) notched an unassisted tally. W&L ended

scored unassisted with 34 seconds remaining, while sophomore attackman

scored a career-high five goals to lead Washington and Lee to an 11-3
win over neighboring VMI in the 15th annual Lee Jackson Lacrosse Classic
on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field. For W&L, the win was
its 14th straight over the Keydets. Fink and VMI senior midfielder Ben Midura (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) received
the Worrell-Fallon Trophy as the game MVP's. W&L senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) started
the scoring as he found the net unassisted just 53 seconds into the game.
The Keydets (1-7) answered back at the 12:28 mark of the first quarter

quarter as sophomore attackman Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin)
found the net unassisted for a 7-6 lead. Van Nostrand scored again with
9:11 remaining in the game off an assist from sophomore attackman Nick
Purkat (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) to give the Bullets an 8-6 edge.

period. The Generals (2-1) climbed back to within 5-3 with 9:31
remaining in the opening half as sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington,
Del./Tatnall) and sophomore midfielder Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney)
scored back-to-back goals. However, Washington would outscore W&L,
3-2, in the final minutes of the first half to take an 8-5 lead at the
break. The two teams played a scoreless third period before W&L
got on the board with 9:51 remaining in the game on an unassisted goal

Del./Tatnall) scored three goals and assisted on another to help lead
fifth-ranked Washington and Lee past Division II Pfeiffer, 11-5, on Wednesday
afternoon at Wilson Field. Fink scored the Generals' (2-0) first two goals of the afternoon
and assisted on the third as W&L built a 5-0 lead after one quarter
of play. W&L upped its lead to 7-0 with 5:28 remaining in the half
on a pair of unassisted goals by sophomore midfielder Mark McLewee (Timonium,
Md./Dulaney) and senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien).
However, the Falcons (0-2) struck back with three goals before the break
to cut the W&L lead to 7-3. Fink led the Generals' offense, while senior midfielder
John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) notched two goals. Barnett, Brown
and junior midfielder Tom Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) tallied one

its 2002 lacrosse season with a 10-2 win over Bates College on Saturday
afternoon at Wilson Field. The Generals (1-0) opened the scoring with 5:10 remaining
in the opening period as senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien)
found the net off an assist from senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air,
Md./John Carroll) for an extra man goal. W&L pushed its lead to 2-0
just 4:09 later as Moore scored off an assist from freshman attackman
Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport). The Generals would go on
to score the next three goals and held a 5-0 halftime lead. Following the break, W&L again went on a three-goal
spurt to assume an 8-0 lead as sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington,
Del./Tatnall) notched one goal and one assist during the stretch. Bates (0-1) responded with its first goal at the 4:21 mark
of the third period in a man-up situation as senior attackman Dave Frederick
(West Hartford, Conn./Conard) scored an unassisted tally. The Generals then retaliated with an unassisted goal by
sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius)
at the 2:28 mark of the third period, and a goal by Moore off an assist
from Fink with 11:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Bates rounded out the scoring with 8:02 remaining as senior
attackman Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y./Friends Academy) scored unassisted. Barnett led the Generals with three goals, while Martin
posted two goals and one assist. Fink totaled one goal and two assists.
Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) recorded nine saves
in his first career start in goal. Junior goalie Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I./Moses Brown) stopped
16 shots for the Bobcats. For the game, W&L outshot Bates, 56-18, and held a 54-31
