W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO ROANOKE, 16-9, IN ODAC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS
SALEM, Va. – Top-seeded and third-ranked Roanoke outscored fourth-seeded Washington and Lee, 6-0, in the fourth period en route to a 16-9 victory over the Generals in the ODAC men's lacrosse tournament semifinals on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va.
SCORING: GOALTENDING: TEAM STATS -- GENERALS -- W&L MEN'S LACROSSE DOWNS RANDOLPH-MACON, 12-7 ASHLAND, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) scored three goals and assisted on two others to help lead Washington and Lee to a 12-7 win over Randolph-Macon in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Va. Randolph-Macon (5-9, 0-6) jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead on the strength of two goals by sophomore attackman Paul Johnsen and a pair of assists by senior midfielder P.C. Johnsen. However, the Generals ended the opening period with three straight goals, including two by St. John, for a 4-3 advantage. W&L (7-5, 3-3) then assumed control of the game by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 5-0 over the second quarter for a 9-3 lead at the break. After a goal by freshman attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) off a feed from St. John just 3:45 into the third period gave W&L a 10-3 lead, Randolph-Macon made a run by tallying three of the game's next four goals to pull within 11-6 with 12:06 left in the game. However, the Yellow Jackets could get no closer than the five-goal margin. Skeen and junior midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) supplemented St. John's effort with two goals and and one assist each. Junior attackman Grant Martin (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) notched one goal and one assist, while senior attackman Clark Finney (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) added a pair of assists. Junior Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) started in goal and made six saves in 52 minutes of action. P.C. Johnsen finished with one goal and four assists for R-MC, while Paul Johnsen notched three goals. Sophomore attackman Peter LaPaglia added one goal and one assist, and junior Brian Vierheller posted 14 saves in 40 minutes between the pipes. Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Roanoke College for an ODAC Tournament Semifinal contest. The game time is yet to be determined.
SCORING: GOALTENDING: TEAM STATS -- GENERALS -- W&L MEN'S LACROSSE WINS BATTLE OF LEXINGTON, 9-8 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) recorded 14 saves, all in the second half, including two in the final seconds, to lift the Generals to a 9-8 win over VMI in the 19th Annual Lee Jackson Lacrosse Classic held at the W&L Turf Field on Tuesday evening. The Keydets (3-9) climbed back from a 9-5 hole with three straight goals in the final 4:36 to pull within 9-8 in the waning seconds. Sophomore attackman Kevin Hill (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) started the rally with a pair of goals just 28 seconds apart to bring VMI to within 9-7 with 4:08 remaining in the game. Senior midfielder Tony Cavalero (Annandale, Va./Annandale) found the net with 45 seconds remaining to give the Keydets a chance to tie the game. After a W&L turnover with just under 10 seconds remaining, Lalli recorded a save then stopped a point-blank rebound chance as time expired to preserve the win for the Generals. Lalli was named the W&L recipient of the Worrell-Fallon Award as the game MVP, while Hill received the award for the Keydets. VMI opened a 4-1 lead with 6:03 left in the first quarter on the strength of one goal and two assists by Hill. However, W&L ended the first half with four straight goals, including a man-up goals by freshman midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) and freshman attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson), to take a 5-4 lead at the break. SCORING: GOALTENDING: TEAM STATS -- GENERALS -- W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, 11-8 LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 17th-ranked Hampden-Sydney men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter and never looked back in claiming an 11-8 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field. The Tigers broke open a 1-1 game with three straight goals, two of which were assisted by junior midfielder Michael Via (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), for a 4-1 lead with 11:24 left in the second quarter. The Generals (5-5, 2-3) got one back on a short-handed goal by freshman attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) off a feed from junior midfielder Charlie Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) just 30 seconds later, but Hampden-Sydney pushed back to a three-goal lead (5-2) just 49 seconds after that on a goal by junior midfielder William Shell (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's) off a feed from senior attackman Vince Smith (Palmyra, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield). Skeen scored again off a feed from Clarke at the 7:41 mark of the second quarter, but H-SC senior attackman Eamon Thornton (Atlanta, Ga./McCallie School) scored on the doorstep with two seconds remaining in the half to give the Tigers a 6-3 lead at the break. Hampden-Sydney (7-4, 3-2) pushed out to a 9-4 advantage with 7:42 left in the third period, but the Generals recovered with back-to-back goals by freshman midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) and sophomore attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) to slice it to a 9-6 game with 4:36 left in the third period. Thornton gave the Tigers a 10-6 lead heading into the fourth period when he scored off a feed from Shell with 35 seconds left in the third period, but the Generals again went on a two-goal run to make the score 10-8 with 8:50 left in the game. However, W&L could get no closer and the Tigers added the capper with 6:59 left in the contest. St. John broke a 2-2 tie with 3:50 left in the first quarter as he scored off an assist from freshman attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson). The goal was the first in a three-goal run that gave the Generals a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter. The Marlins (8-4, 1-3) countered with a man-up goal by sophomore attackman Brett Morris (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) off an assist from senior attackman Dan Hofmeister (Williamsburg, Va./Hampton Roads) with 6:15 left in the half, but the Generals (8-4, 1-3) ripped off two more goals, including one by St. John, for a 7-3 lead at the break. The Bombers (1-1) got on the board with 8:31 left in the first half on an unassisted goal by senior attackman Brandon Geluso (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields), but W&L countered with three more tallies in the final 7:05 of the half for a 7-1 lead at the break. Geluso started the second half scoring with another unassisted goal, but the Generals responded with three straight markers, including a pair by freshman midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) for a 10-2 lead.
