Randolph-Macon 14, W&L 13 - April 29, 1997
LEXINGTON, Va. Randolph-Macon senior attackman Frank Smollon (Riva, Md./DeMatha) scored his fifth goal of the game on a diving wraparound shot with six seconds remaining to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 14-13 upset victory at 10th-ranked Washington and Lee on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets (9-5, 3-3 ODAC) beat the Generals (10-3, 4-2) for just the second time in 14 career meetings and for the first time since 1989.

W&L trailed 4-2 midway through the first quarter after back-to-back goals by Smollon, but then scored seven straight goals to open up a 9-4 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half. The Yellow Jackets scored twice before the half to cut the lead to 9-6.

W&L's Paul Stanley (Darien, Conn./Darien) opened the scoring in the second half to give the Generals a 10-6 lead, but Macon went on a 4-1 run to pull within 11-10 entering the fourth quarter. Smollon scored on a feed from Eric Monestario (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Pinecrest) just five seconds into the final quarter to tie the game 11-11.

The Generals regained the lead as Ande Jenkins (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) and Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) each scored their third goals of the game just 25 seconds apart to give W&L a 13-11 lead with 10:00 remaining. The scored remained that way until R-MC sophomore Mike Smith (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin) scored with 4:36 remaining and 33 seconds later Smith found Dan Carver (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) in front of the cage for the game-tying goal.

W&L won the ensuing faceoff and had several chances to score, but was unable to convert and R-MC regained possession with a minute and a half remaing. W&L goalie Scott Jackson (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) made a point-blank save on Smollon with 50 seconds remaining, but the Yellow Jackets retained possession to set the stage for Smollon's game winner.

Jenkins' three goals for the Generals gave him 55 for the season, breaking the school's single season record of 53 set by Rob Morgan in 1975. Shane McLaughlin (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) also had three goals for the Generals. R-MC goalie Sean McNamara (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) made 15 saves.

W&L finishes the season on Saturday at VMI for the 10th Annual Lee-Jackson Lacrosse Classic.
