head in a corner kick from sophomore back Ben Thompson with under 14
minutes remaining in the first half, and the Generals took a 2-0 halftime
lead. W&L stretched its lead to 3-0 nine and a half minutes into the
second half, when senior midfielder Gordon Meeker scored an unassisted
goal, and it looked as the though the Generals would cruise to victory.
However, Christopher Newport would answer with goals from Shadi Abi-Saab
and Larry Walk in an eight and a half minute span to close to within 3-2
with just over eight minutes left in the game, before W&L freshman Jon
Wilson scored an unassisted goal to ice the 4-2 win for the Generals.
W&L outshot CNU 24-11, and forced CNU keepers Joseph Pombriant
and Kevin Huylebroeck to make a combined 12 saves. W&L junior keeper E.J.
Murphy made six saves before leaving the game with just under three
minutes showing on the clock. W&L will travel to Virginia Wesleyan for
their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
Christopher Newport will host Eastern Mennonite at 1:00 PM on Sunday.

September 13, 1997 -- Washington, D.C.
Washington and Lee's men's soccer team defeated Catholic University of
America 1-0 on Saturday, in what turned out to be the Generals first game
of the season, after Thursday's scheduled game with Shenandoah was
cancelled due to poor field conditions. The Generals are now 1-0 on the
young season, while Catholic falls to 1-3.
W&L scored the game's lone goal with just two minutes remaining
in the first half, when sophomore forward Jamie Parker fired a shot from
the top of the 18 yard box that was saved by the Catholic keeper, but W&L
junior forward Sam Chase corralled the rebound and put the ball in the
net to give the Generals the 1-0 victory. W&L junior keeper E. J. Murphy
played the entire game in net and recorded his fourth career shutout. W&L
returns to action on Wednesday when they host Christopher Newport at 4:00
PM and Catholic travels to Western Maryland on Wednesday for their next game.
