W&L MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, 3-1
NORFOLK, Va. -- Kelvin Murray scored a pair of
goals and added one assist as top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan bested Washington
and Lee, 3-1, in the ODAC Tournament championship on Saturday evening.
Following a scoreless first half, the Marlins (16-3) cracked the scoreboard
at 50:03 as Mark Tribendis scored off an assist from Murray. Murray
extended the Virginia Wesleyan lead to 2-0 with the eventual game-winner
at 55:53.
The Generals (7-6-4) cut the Marlins lead in half at 65:25 when junior
midfielder Justin Mygatt (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Acad.) scored off an
assist from junior forward Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest).
Virginia Wesleyan pushed its lead to 3-1 when Murray scored unassisted
at 87:57.
Sophomore goalie Michael Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) played
all 90 minutes for W&L, making four saves. Sean Wheaton manned the
Marlins net, making three saves on the day.
The Generals wrap up the 2003 season with a 7-6-4 overall record

W&L MEN'S SOCCER ADVANCES PAST GUILFORD ON PK'S
NORFOLK, Va. -- The seventh-seeded Washington and
Lee men's soccer team played sixth-seeded Guilford to a 2-2 draw, then
advanced to the ODAC Tournament championship on penalty kicks (6-5)
on Friday evening.
The Generals (8-5-4) took a 1-0 lead as junior midfielder Justin Mygatt
(Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy) scored unassisted at 33:19. Following
halftime, W&L pushed its lead to 2-0 thanks to an unassisted goal
by freshman Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal)
at 56:42.
The Quakers (10-8-1) started their come-back bid off a penalty kick
goal by Tim Imafidon at 74:23, and locked the game at 2-2 when Brett
Ralls scored an unassisted goal at 79:56.
Neither team was able to alter the scoreboard through two 10-minute
overtime period, leaving the final decision to penalty kicks.
Sophomore goalie Michael Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) finished
the day with three saves across 110 minutes, and stopped on Quaker penalty
kick in the shootout. Matt McCall made seven saves for Guilford.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, when the Generals
take on Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC Tournament Championship match.

SALEM, Va. -- The seventh-seeded Washington and Lee men's
soccer team played second-seeded Roanoke to a 1-1 draw, then advanced
to the ODAC Tournament semifinals on penalty kicks (3-1) on Saturday
afternoon.
The Generals (7-5-3) took a 1-0 lead as freshman midfielder
Kyle Garcia (Smyrna, Ga./Westminster) scored unassisted at the 29:37
mark.
W&L held the lead until 2:38 remained in regulation,
when Roanoke sophomore midfielder Donny Smith found the net unassisted.
From there, the two teams played through a pair of scoreless 10-minute
overtime periods, setting up the penalty kicks.
Sophomore goalie Michael Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece
Olympia) stopped a pair of Maroon (10-4-3) penalty kicks and finished
the game with five saves over 110 minutes.
Junior Harper Thorsen played all 110 minutes in goal for
Roanoke, notching one save.
For the game, the Maroons held a 13-6 advantage in shots
and an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. There was a total of 48 fouls whistled
and seven yellow cards were issued for the match.
The Generals will face sixth-seeded Guilford in the semifinals
on Friday at the highest remaining seed. The time is also TBA.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee scored three goals
in the opening 16:16 of the game and cruised to a 5-0 win over Emory
& Henry in ODAC men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Generals (7-5-2, 3-4-2) opened the scoring just 1:01
into the match as sophomore midfielder Derrick Lott (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville
Catholic) found the net off a feed from senior midfielder Jacob Stoehr
(San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights).
The ball found the net again just 8:01 later as a Wasp
defender headed the ball into his own goal. Junior midfielder Justin
Mygatt (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy) scored unassisted at the 16:16
mark and junior midfielder Joshua Grahe (Hagerstown, Md./Mercersburg
Academy (Pa.)) scored off an assist by freshman forward Sandy Piracci
(Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) at 28:37 to round out the first half
scoring.
The Generals would add an unassisted tally by sophomore
midfielder Walker Nickles (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) at 74:17 to cap
the scoring.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- John Williamson scored the
equalizing and game-winning goals to lift Bridgewater over Washington
and Lee, 3-2, in ODAC men's soccer action on Saturday.
The Generals (6-5-2, 2-4-2) took a 2-0 lead as junior midfielder Brian
Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) scored at 27:30 and senior
midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored at
55:30. Stoehr assisted on Pirkle's goal, while sophomore midfielder
Derrick Lott (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic) assisted on Stoehr's
tally.
The Eagles (12-4-0, 6-2-0) began their comeback with a goal from Matt
Brock at 73:30. Brock returned to W&L's defensive third at 84:00
to assist on Williamson's game-tying goal. Williamson put the game away
with 1:20 remaining in the first overtime.
Sophomore Michael Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and junior
Christopher Carlson (Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) split time
in the Generals' goal. Stanton started and made two saves, while Carlson

action on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior defender T.J. Muse (Reidsville, N.C./Southeast Guilford) scored
first for the Quakers (8-7, 3-4) at 6:31, while Ampofo Darko (Kumasi,
Ghana/Sandy Spring Friends [Md.]) tallied a pair of late goals to round
out the scoring. Senior forward Tim Imafidon (Raleigh, N.C./Wake Forest-Rolesville)

The Marlins (11-2, 6-0) took a 1-0 lead at 41:30 when Phil Neiland finished
off a pass from Ross McLeod. After the break, Virginia Wesleyan pushed
it's lead to 2-0 when Kelvin Murray stole the ball from the W&L
(6-3-2, 2-2-2) defense and beat the keeper 1-on-1 at the 59:11 mark.
Junior Christopher Carlson (Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) played
all 90 minutes in the Generals' goal, making five stops. Sean Wheaton
covered the Marlin net, stopping six W&L shots.

Mich./Saline) scored a pair of goals to lift theVMI men's soccer team
to a 3-1 win over Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon at W&L.
Lloyd opened the scoring as he found the net off an assist
by sophomore forward Parker Thurman (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) at the
49:01 mark.
The Keydets (3-10) extended to a 2-0 lead at the 72:10
mark as Thurman scored off an assist by senior midfielder Ross Davis
(Baton Rouge, La./Woodlawn).
The Generals (6-2-2) closed the gap on an unassisted tally
by junior midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest)
at the 78:57 mark, but Lloyd's second goal off an assist by Davis at
the 85:16 mark sealed the VMI win.
For the game, VMI held a 21-6 advantage in shots and

team saw its unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as the
Generals lost to Roanoke, 2-1, in ODAC action.
Sophomore forward Elliott Stallings (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) broke
a 1-1 draw at 39:33, intercepting a failed W&L (6-1-2, 2-1-2) clear
and burying the goal to give the Maroons (9-2-1, 5-1-0) the win.
After watching Roanoke take a 1-0 lead off a goal from freshman defender
Brian Walter (Columbia, Md./River Hill), W&L rallied and evened
the score with a goal from freshman midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville,
S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) at 28:54.
Despite a tightly matched second half, neither team was able to score
again.

team used a pair of first-half goals to defeat Savannah College of Art
and Design, 2-1, on Saturday night.
Junior defender Peter Miller (Towson, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) scored
off an assist from senior midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo
Heights) at 11:47 to give W&L (5-0-2) a 1-0 lead. At 28:54 sophomore
midfielder Derrick Lott (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic) was awarded
a penalty kick after he was chopped down in the SCAD (1-8) box. He sank
the shot, giving the Generals a 2-0 lead.
Savannah A&D freshman forward Justin Wolocko scored off an assist
from sophomore Tim Toomey 53 minutes into the match, but the Bees never
got any closer to W&L.

remaining to break a 1-1 tie, and lift the Washington and Lee men's soccer
team past Hampden-Sydney, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) put the
Generals (4-0-1, 1-0-1) on the board at 57:04, locking the score at 1-1.
After Sullivan's goal, Pirkle iced the win off a free-kick, bending a
left-footed shot around the Hampden-Sydney wall and into the net at 87:32.
The Tigers (5-3, 0-2) took a 1-0 first-half lead off the foot of freshman
forward Marcus Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes).
Hampden-Sydney held a narrow 12-10 advantage in shots, while Washington

The Royals (4-1-2, 1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Darren
Stauffer (Alberta, Canada/Western Mennonite) lofted a long shot from the
corner of the 18-yard box and found the far netting at 35:17. The Generals'
(3-0-1, 0-0-1) locked the score at 1-1 with less than a minute left in
the first period. Junior defender Peter Miller (Towson, Md./Baltimore
Lutheran) made a run from the back and buried a shot with 57 second left
before the break.
The Generals struck first in the second half with a goal from freshman
midfielder Kyle Garcia (Smyrna, Ga./Westminster) at 74:56, but the visitors
locked the score back up four minutes later as Stauffer burried his second
goal of the day.
Despite feverish intensity during the two overtime periods, neither squad
could find the back of the net.
Washington and Lee held a 22-5 advantage in shots and a 10-2 advantage
in corner kicks.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 27, when the Generals

W&L MEN'S SOCCER BEATS CATHOLIC, 3-1
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Brian Pirkle
(Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) scored a pair of goals to propel the
Washington and Lee men's soccer team past Catholic, 3-1, in non-conference
action on Saturday afternoon.
Fellow junior midfielder Justin Mygatt (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy)
scored the Generals (3-0) third goal of the contest and assisted on Pirkle's
first score of the day. The victory marks the first time W&L has won
three straight games since the 2001 squad put together a three-game, and
a seven-game winning streak.
Pirkle found the back of the net early in the match, burying a cross from
Mygatt 3:35 into the contest. He scored again, this time unassisted, at
20:46 to give the Generals a 2-0 lead going into halftime. Mygatt netted
his goal at 52:49 to give W&L a 3-0 lead. Freshman forward Sandy Piracci
(Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) earned an assist on the goal.
Sophomore defender Matt Brideau (Fairfax Station, Va./Bishop Ireton) scored
Catholic's (0-3-2) lone tally at 87:00.
Sophomore Michael Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and junior
Christopher Carlson (Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) split time
in the Generals' goal and logged a saves each. Freshman keeper Evan Phillips
(Salisbury, Md./Bennett) made eight saves for the Cardinals.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when the

FERRUM, Va. -- Junior midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington,
Va./Woodberry Forest) scored a goal and added an assist as the Washington
and Lee men's soccer team blanked Ferrum College, 2-0, on Tuesday afternoon.
Pirkle scored the first goal of the day for the Generals (2-0) off an
assist from fellow junior midfielder Justin Mygatt (Marietta, Ga./Woodward
Academy) at 10:21. Ten minutes later, Pirkle set up W&L's second goal
with an assist to senior mifielder Jake Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo
Heights), who found the net at 20:21 into the match.
The win marks the first time W&L (2-0) has opened the season with
a pair of wins since the 2000 squad won its first seven games.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER BEATS N.C. WESLEYAN, 2-1 IN OVERTIME
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's
soccer team opened its 2003 campaign, defeating N.C. Wesleyan 2-1 in overtime
on Saturday.
The Generals (1-0) were led by senior Jake Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo
Heights), who scored a penalty kick and assisted on the golden goal in
overtime.
With the scored locked at 1-1 in the first overtime period, Stoehr fed
junior Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) for the gamewinning
goal. Pirkle beat opposing keeper Jeff Johnson at the 87:38 mark to give
the Generals the victory.
N.C.Wesleyan (2-5) overcame an early 1-0 deficit when Carlos Gomez beat
Generals goalie Michael Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) to send
the match into extra minutes.
Stanton logged two saves across 45 minutes and overtime while fellow General
Christopher Carlson (Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) made two stops
during his 45 minutes between the pipes. Johnson made a pair of saves
for N.C. Wesleyan.
Washington and Lee returns to action Tuesday, September 16 when the Generals
travel to Ferrum. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
