W&L MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO EASTERN MENNONITE, 2-1
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Benjamin Yoder scored a goal and added an assist to give the seventh-seeded Eastern Mennonite men's soccer team a 2-1 win over third-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Friday evening in Virginia Beach, Va. Both teams fired off 13 shots, while W&L held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made four saves, while Tim Koehn stopped five shots for the Royals. -- GENERALS -- GOALS W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS RANDOLPH-MACON, 4-1 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Kyle Garcia (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) scored a goal and added an assist to help lead the third-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field. Garcia gave the Generals (9-5-2) a 1-0 lead with 10:16 gone-by on an unassisted tally and the game remained 1-0 heading into halftime. The Yellow Jackets (12-4-2) tied the game at 1-1 at 55:49 when senior defender Jamie Flynn (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) scored on a penalty kick. W&L retook the lead at 62:48 when sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) scored off an assist from Garcia. The Generals pushed their lead to 3-1 at 72:12 on an unassisted tally by junior midfielder Rhett McCraw and sophomore forward Travis Short (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) ended the scoring with an unassisted goal at 85:45. The Generals outshot R-MC, 14-8, but the Yellow Jackets held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made one save, while senior netminder Nick Warner (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) stopped four shots for the Yellow Jackets. The site and time are still to be determined. -- GENERALS -- GOALS W&L MEN'S SOCCER DOWNS LYNCHBURG, 2-1 LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored a pair of goals to lift Washington and Lee to a 2-1 win over Lynchburg in ODAC men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Shellenberger Field. Palmer opened the scoring just 10:46 into the game as he stole the ball from a defender and found the net. The Hornets (8-8, 3-6) knotted the game at 1-1 at the 54:10 mark as Brian Cocchiola took a rebounded shot and beat W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). However, Palmer tallied the game-winner at the 84:40 mark, heading in a cross from senior midfielder Ryan Light (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert C. Byrd). Sheedy played all 90 minutes in goal for the Generals (8-5-2, 5-2-2), stopping three shots. Todd Perkins played the opening 45 minutes in goal for the Hornets, stopping three shots. He was spelled by Corey Zimmerman, who also notched three saves in the final 45 minutes. Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it will host an ODAC tournament quarterfinal contest. W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) played all 90 minutes, making one save. Kyle Williams also played all 90 minutes in goal for the Marlins, posting three saves. For the game, the teams tied in shots (8-8) and W&L held a slim 4-3 edge on penalty kicks. Palmer tallied an unassisted goal in the 39th minute to give W&L a 1-0 lead which it would take into halftime. Palmer then ended the scoring in the 52nd minute when he scored off a pass from freshman defender Fletcher McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal). W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) played the entire game to pick up his fourth win of the season. Senior netminder Dave Turpin also played the entire game and made three saves for Bluefield. With the win the Generals improve to 6-4-2, while the Rams fell to 6-7. W&L MEN'S SOCCER TIES EASTERN MENNONITE, 1-1, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team played its fifth double-overtime game of the season and came away with a 1-1 tie against ODAC-foe Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field. The Royals (6-6-2, 2-3-1) scored at the 34:38 mark to take a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Jared Byler (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) took a pass from senior midfielder Adam Shank (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and buried his shot into the back of the Generals' net. The score remained 1-0 until W&L (5-4-2, 3-1-2) tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) at 68:10. Both teams fired off two shots in the overtime periods, but couldn't score the game-winner. EMU outshot the Generals, 15-14, and held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks. W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) played all 110 minutes and tied a career-high with seven saves. W&L MEN'S SOCCER EDGES GUILFORD, 2-1, IN OVERTIME LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) scored an unassisted goal with 1:19 remaining in the first overtime period to give Washington and Lee a 2-1 win over Guilford in ODAC men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field. Both defenses controlled the game for most of the first half until Quaker freshman forward Scott Meguid (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) scored on a free kick with just 2:21 left in the first half to give Guilford (4-5-1, 0-4) a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The Generals (5-4-1, 3-1-1) finally got their offense going in the second half and tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Brett Strohsacker (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) at the 80:28 mark, which set up McCraw's game-winner.
