W&L MEN'S SOCCER KNOCKED OUT OF CONFERENCE TOURNEY BY LYNCHBURG, 1-0 (11/3)
SALEM, Va. -- Second-seeded Lynchburg downed the third-seeded and 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team, 1-0, in the semifinals of the 2006 ODAC Tournament on Friday morning at Roanoke College's Elizabeth Campus. The match remained tied at 0-0 until senior midfielder Casey Zambor notched the game-winner on an unassisted tally at 64:14. The Hornets held on for the duration of regulation to knock the Generals out of the conference tournament. Junior goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made three saves for W&L, while LC's goalkeeper Marcus Jordan stopped two would-be goals. With the win, Lynchburg (13-4-2) advances to the 2006 ODAC Championship match and will take on the fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Salem, Va. LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Head Coach Rolf Piranian amassed his 250th career win as the 22nd-ranked W&L men's soccer team knocked off Eastern Mennonite, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2006 ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field. In his 31st season at the helm of the program, Piranian now owns an all-time record of 250-206-33 (.545) and has been named ODAC Coach of the Year seven times. The Generals notched both of their scores in the opening stanza, first entering the scoring column when junior midfielder Josh Dodds (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Marr) scored off a rebounded shot at 20:48. W&L upped its lead to 2-0 when junior midfielder Jamie Mallinson (Jackson, Miss./St. Andrew's Episcopal) found the back of the net off a corner kick by freshman midfielder Drew Crowley (Weston, Mass./Weston) in the 37th minute. The game remained knotted at 0-0 until Jobarteh headed the ball into the back of the net off an assist from senior forward Matthew Lombardo (Virgina Beach, Va./Floyd Kellam) at 56:47. Jobarteh responded with his second goal just 26 seconds later when freshman midfielder Josh Reed (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) fed him the ball and he volleyed a shot past W&L's junior goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) at 57:13. The game was knotted at 0-0 through the first half and into the second half until a flurry of offensive action ensued with just over 15 minutes to play in regulation. The Generals (2-0) got on the board just 5:19 into the contest on an own goal by the Cardinals. W&L senior forward Kyle Garcia (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) took a shot that was inadvertantly kicked into the CUA goal by a Cardinals defender that was attempting to clear the shot. W&L added to its lead at the 17:50 mark, when senior midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) made good on a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. Catholic (0-2-1) rebounded with a Matt Brady goal off an assist from Daniel Clifford at the 18:09 mark, but neither team found the net again in the contest.
