RITTER AND GINDER CONCLUDE COMPETITION AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
ST. PETERS, Mo. -- Senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain
Brook) and freshman Michael Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) both
earned Honorable Mention All-America honors on Saturday at the NCAA Division
III Swim Championships held at Principia College.
Ritter, seeded 16th in the 200-Back, clocked a 1:52.56 for 13th-place.
Ginder was also seeded 16th in the 100-Free and touched the wall in 46.72
for a 14th-place finish.
With todays competition, Ritter and Ginder conclude their participation
in the 2004 NCAA Championships.

TWO RECORDS FALL AS RITTER AND GINDER NAMED ALL-AMERICA
ST. PETERS, Mo. -- Senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain
Brook) and freshman Michael Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) both
earned All-America honors on Friday at the NCAA Division III Swim Championships
held at Principia College.
Ritter, seeded seventh in the 100-Back after setting a school record in
the morning preliminaries with a 51.32 clocking, touched the wall in 51.07
in the finals to finish seventh and earn All-America recognition for the
third straight season.
Ginder, seeded fifth in the 200-Free after the morning preliminaries,
finished fourth in the finals with a school record time of 1:41.13 to
earn All-America honors in his first season as a General.
On Thursday Ritter placed 45th in the 50-Free preliminaries with a time
of 21.68 and Ginder placed 32nd in the 500-Free preliminaries with a time
of 4:43.50.
Both swimmers return to action tomorrow as Ritter competes in the 200-Back
and Ginder competes in the 100-Free.

W&L WOMENS SWIMMING WINS 11TH ODAC TITLE
RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee womens swimming
team captured the ODAC/Atlantic States Championships, held at Radford
University.
The Generals, who won their 11th-straight ODAC crown, compiled 557 points
to best second-place Randolph-Macon (520) by just 37 points. The Yellow
Jackets were followed by Randolph-Macon Womans College (336), Hollins
(189) and Sweet Briar (180).
In Atlantic States competition, Head Coach Kiki Jacobs was named Coach
of the Year after W&L compiled a meet-high 692 points. The Generals
were trailed by Randolph-Macon (630), Agnes Scott (425), Randolph-Macon
Womans College (389), College of Notre Dame (247), Mary Baldwin
(221), Sweet Briar (203), Greensboro (200), Hollins (160) and Appalachian
State (69).
Leading the way in the third and final day of competition was senior Mandi
Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and sophomore Kristine
Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville). Kimble took top honors in the
1650 Free with a time of 19:05.85, while Holda touched the wall second
in the 100 Free with a time of 54.86.
Sophomore Keturah Akida (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln) finished third in the
200 Back (2:21.77), while freshman Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien)
rounded out the Generals top place-winners with a third-place time
of 2:36.54 in the 200 Breast.
In the meet finale, Kimble, Holda, junior Suzie LaFleur (Natick, Mass./Montrose)
and freshman Sarah Bloom (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) combined for
second place in the 400 Free Relay (3:47.58).
Washington and Lee finished its season with a 7-4 overall record and a
3-1 mark in ODAC action.

W&L WOMENS SWIMMING LEADS AFTER DAY TWO AT
ODAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee womens swimming
team remained in first place following day two of the ODAC/Atlantic States
Swimming Championships, held at Radford University.
In Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, the Generals (371)
lead second-place Randolph-Macon (368) by three points. In Atlantic States
competition, W&L (466) leads second-place Randolph-Macon (446) by
20 points.
Leading the way for the Generals in day two was senior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day School) and sophomore Kristine Holda (Strongsville,
Ohio/Strongsville). Kimble placed second in the 400 I.M. with a time of
4:57.84, while Holda placed second in the 200 Free with a time of 2:00.25.
In relay action, Holda joined sophomore Keturah Akida (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln),
sophomore Beth Sauer (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and freshman Abbie Sauter
(Darien, Conn./Darien) for second place in the 200 Medley Relay (1:55.56).
Kimble joined senior Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), junior
Laura Westerman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman Sarah Bloom (Bettendorf,
Iowa/Pleasant Valley) for second in the 800 Free Relay (8:31.75).
Akida rounded out the Generals leading place-winners with a second-place
showing in the 100 Back (1:02.75).
The Generals return to action on Sunday for day three of the ODAC/Atlantic
States Championships.

Leading the way for the Generals in day one was senior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day School), who took second in the 500 Free with a career-best
5:32.54 clocking.
Freshman Sarah Bloom (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) finished third
in the 500 Free (5:38.21), while teaming with junior Suzie LaFleur (Natick,
Mass./Montrose), freshman Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien) and sophomore
Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) for third place in the
200 Free Relay (1:43.28).
Sauter took third in the 200 I.M. (2:20.60), while joining with Holda,
sophomore Beth Sauer (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and sophomore Keturah
Akida (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln) for a second-place showing in the 400
Medley Relay (4:14.32).
Holda rounded out the Generals top finishers, taking fourth place
in the 50 Free with a time of 25.61.
The Generals return to action on Saturday for day two of the ODAC/Atlantic
States Championships.

W&L MENS SWIMMING WINS BLUEGRASS CHAMPIONSHIPS
WOOSTER, Ohio -- Freshman Michael Ginder (Jacksonville,
Fla./Episcopal) was named co-swimmer of the meet and Head Coach Joel Shinofield
was named Coach of the Year as the Washington and Lee mens swimming
team took top honors at the Bluegrass Mountain Championships held at the
Ellen Shapiro Natatorium on Saturday.
Washington and Lee concluded the three-day meet with 567 team points,
two event champions and a school record in the 200 Medley Relay. The Generals
were followed by Cumberland (483.5), Salem International (469), West Virginia
Wesleyan (444), Fairmont (331), Wheeling Jesuit (321), Rollins (316),
Transylvania (275), Randolph-Macon (119), Savannah Art & Design (104),
University of Charleston (36.5) and Asbury (11).
Ginder won the 100 Free with an NCAA B cut time of 46.42,
while senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) claimed top
honors in the 200 back with a pool-record, meet-record and NCAA B
cut time of 1:52.92.
After winning the 200 Medley Relay (1:36.90) on day-two of the championships,
Ginder, Ritter, freshman Ben Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) and senior
Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy) swam the event again
as a time-trial in pursuit of a national qualifying time. The Generals
fell short of qualifying, but bested the school record of 1:36.59 with
a time of 1:36.12.
Sophomore Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and junior
Chris Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) were also among the W&L
leaders. Barrineau took third in the 1650 Free (16:54.07), while Colby
touched the wall third in the 200 Fly (1:56.59).
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sat., Feb. 28 when it travels
to the Indiana (Pa.) Last Chance Meet.

W&L MENS SWIMMING LEADS AFTER DAY TWO OF
BLUEGRASS CHAMPIONSHIPS
WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming
team leads following the second day of competition at the Bluegrass Mountain
Championships.
The Generals claim 389 points and lead the second place
team, Salem International, by 56 points. West Virginia Wesleyan is in
third place (331), followed by Cumberland College (304.5) and Wheeling
Jesuit (236).
Leading the way for the Generals was freshman Michael Ginder
(Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal), who won the 200 freestyle event with a
school-record and NCAA B cut time of 1:41.61. Ginders
time beat the former record of 1:42.18 held by Chip Nordhoff since 1990.
Ginder was also part of the 200 medley relay team which also touched the
fall first (1:36.90). Ginder was joined on the team by senior Eric Ritter
(Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), freshman Ben Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead)
and senior Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy). Ritter
also claimed the title in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.20.
Sophomore Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg)
added a third, first-place finish for the Generals on the day, winning
the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:48.54. Freshman Kevin Hayes (Mercer
Island, Wash./Mercer Island) placed third in the 400 IM (4:14.14) and
junior Chris Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) touched the wall
third in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA B cut time of 51.84.
The Generals return to action again on Saturday in the third
day of competition at the Bluegrass Championships.

W&L MENS SWIMMING IN ACTION AT FIRST DAY
OF BGMC
WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team took
top honors in the 400 Medley Relay as the Generals competed in the first
day of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship on Thursday, at
the Ellen Shapiro Natatorium.
Senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), freshman Benjamin
Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead), senior Drew Catanese (Southampton,
Mass./Suffield Academy) and freshmen Michael Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal)
combined for a 3:30.66, missing the program record by .48 (3:30.18).
Ritter, Ginder and Accinelli also teamed up with sophomore Reed Evans
(Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) in the 200 Free Relay, placing second
with a time of 1:26.90.
Ginder emerged as W&Ls highest individual placewinner, taking
second place in the 50 Free with a time of 21.56. Ritter also took third
in the 50 Free (21.63), while Evans finished eighth (22.77) and Catanese
touched the wall in eleventh (22.80).
Freshman Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) was also among
the Generals leaders after he took the third position in the 200
I.M. with a time of 1:57.76. Sophomore Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South
Mecklenburg) and senior Paul Laraia (Houston, Texas/Memorial) rounded
out the W&L top finishers with fifth (4:50.40) and eighth (5:04.96),
respectively, in the 500 Free.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday for day two of the three

W&L SWIMMING SWEEPS MARYMOUNT
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team captured
seven individual events as the Generals defeated Marymount, 117-60, on
Saturday afternoon at the Cy Twombly Pool. On the womens side the
Generals defeated the Saints, 106-97.
Senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) emerged as the top
finisher in the 200 Back (1:53.79), but his performance in the winning
400 Medley Relay (3:41.58) was the highlight of the day. Leading off the
relay with the 100 Back leg, Ritter set a pool record with an A-cut time
of 51.38. He joins Tim Stanford (86) as the only two Generals to
hold records in Cy Twombly Memorial Pool.
Sophomore Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and freshmen
Michael Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) led all Generals with a
pair of individual first-place finishes each. Barrineau won the 500 Free
(5:08.74) and the 1000 Free (10:35.09), while Ginder took top honors in
the 200 Free (1:46.02) and the 100 Free (49.21).
Junior Christopher Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and freshman
Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) also won events for W&L.
Colby won the 200 Fly (1:57.81) and Hayes touched the wall first in the
400 IM (4:25.79).
For the women, seniors Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro) and

The W&L mens team returns to action on Feb. 13 at the Bluegrass
Mountain Conference Championships. The W&L women return to the pool
on Feb. 20 when they travel to Radford for the ODAC Championships.

W&L SWIMMING SPLITS AT GETTYSBURG
GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team won
10 events as the Generals defeated Gettysburg, 126-79, on Sunday afternoon.
On the womens side W&L fell to the Bullets, 146-30.
On the mens side, senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain
Brook) and freshmen Michael Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) each
won two individual events and broke a pool record to help Washington &
Lee remain undefeated this season.
Ritter touched the wall first in the 100 Back with a record time of 53.62,
while Ginders time in the 200 Free reset the pool best at 1:45.73.
Ginder also won the 100 free (48.85) and Ritter won the 50 free (22.00).
Sophomore Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) also won
a pair of individual events on the day with top finishes in the 1000 Free
(10:22.16) and 500 Free (5:00.96), while junior Christopher Colby (Ossining,
N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and freshman Benjamin Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead)
recorded single event wins. Colby won the 100 Fly (53.74) and Accinelli
took top honors in the 100 Breast (1:05.23).
Accinelli combined with freshman Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer
Island), senior Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy and
sophomore Reed Evans (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) for a first-place
time of 1:42.45 in the 200 Medley Relay, while Ritter, Colby and Ginder
teamed with Catanese for first in the 200 Free Relay (1:30.15)
For the women, sophomore Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville)
recorded the Generals highest individual place of the meet with
a second-place showing in the 200 Free (2:02.08).
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, January 31 when the

ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team won nine
individual events as the Generals defeated Randolph-Macon, 154.5-79.5,
on Saturday afternoon. On the womens side W&L fell to the Yellow
Jackets, 145-117.
On the mens side, senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain
Brook) led the way with top-finishes in three events. Ritter won the 100
Breast (1:05.67) and the 50 Free (22.32) before finishing the day a first-place
in the 500 Free (5:09.48).
Junior Christopher Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) won a pair
of events on the day, highlighted by a pool record time of 2:02.28 in
the 200 Fly. He also won the 100 Fly with a time of (54.37).
Sophomore Reed Evans (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro) and freshmen Michael
Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) and Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island,
Wash./Mercer Island) each won an event for the Generals (5-0). Evans won
the 200 Free with a time of 1:55.06, Ginder touched the wall first in
the 100 Back (57.76) and Hayes recorded top honors in the 200 Breast with
a time of 2:26.14.
On the womens side, freshman Sarah Bloom (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant
Valley) led W&L (6-3, 3-1) with a first place time of 5:45.49 in the
500 Free.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday, January 25 when the Generals

W&L SWIMMING COMPETES AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC INVITATIONAL
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Washington and Lee mens and womens
swimming teams finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Florida
Atlantic New Years Invitational on Saturday in Boca Raton, Florida.
The Generals mens squad finished fifth in a field of six teams,
scoring 178 team points. James Madison won the mens competition
with 509 points, followed by Pennsylvania (462), Florida Atlantic (425),
Davidson (267), W&L (178), and Transylvania (77).
Senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) recorded the Generals
highest place-finish, touching the wall fifth in the 100 Free with a time
of 49.49. Junior Christopher Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac)
was also among the top W&L finishers, placing sixth in the 100 Fly
with a time of 54.70.
On the womens side, the Generals placed sixth with a team score
of 103. Florida Atlantic took top honors with 522 points, followed by
Pennsylvania (467), Davidson (381.50), Florida International (266.50),
Transylvania (167) and W&L (103).
Sophomore Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) recorded the
Generals top place on the day, finishing 10th in the 100 Free with
a time of 57.44.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, January 10 when the

W&L MENS SWIMMING FINISHES FIFTH AT F&M
INVITATIONAL
LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team finished
in fifth place at the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational,
concluded on Sunday in Lancaster, Pa.
The Generals scored 793.5 team points, while invitational champion Mary
Washington scored 1,632 team points. Springfield (1,200) finished second
overall, followed by Ithaca (1,142), Gettysburg (958.5), W&L, Franklin
and Marshall (575.5), McDaniel (340.5) and Saint Marys (111).
Washington and Lees day-three efforts were paced by senior Eric
Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who won the 200 Back with a
national B-cut time of 1:55.04. The victory marked his third
top-place finish in the invitational. On day two he won the 50 Free with
a time of 21.64 and touched the wall first in the 100 Back with a national
A-cut time of 51.40.
Freshman Mike Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) concluded the weekend
with a strong day-three performance. Ginder finished second in the 100
Free with a time of 47.67 and combined with Ritter, senior Drew Catanese
(Southampton, Mass./Suffield Acadamey) and junior Chris Colby (Ossining,
N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) for a second-place time of 3:15.64 in the 400
Free Relay.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, January 3, when
the Generals travel to the Florida Atlantic Invitational. Meet time is

W&L MENS SWIMMING FIFTH AFTER DAY TWO OF
F&M INVITATIONAL
LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team resides
in fifth place out of eight teams after day two of the three-day Franklin
& Marshall Invitational.
On day two, the Generals were paced by senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham,
Ala./Mountain Brook), who won the 50-freestyle with a time of 21.64. Ritter
also teamed with freshman Ben Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead), senior
Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy) and freshman Mike
Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) to place second in the 400 medley
relay with a time of 3:37.06.
Ginder also placed fifth in the 50-freestyle with a time of 22.04, while
freshman Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) notched an eighth
place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.41.
W&L will resume action in the F&M Invitational on Sunday morning.

W&L WOMENS SWIMMING FINISHES THIRD AT RANDOLPH-MACON
INVITATIONAL
ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee womens swimming team finished
third out of eight teams at the Randolph-Macon Invitational held on Friday
and Saturday in Ashland, Va.
The Generals amassed 375 points to rank behind Marymount (423) and Randolph-Macon
(409).
W&L was paced by sophomore Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville),
who placed second in the 100- and 200-freestyle events. Holda clocked
in at 56.43 in the 100 and 2:05.05 in the 200.
Junior Laura Westerman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) finished second in the
200 IM with a time of 2:27.84 and fourth in the 200 butterfly with a time
of 2:35.82. Freshman Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien) placed third
in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.46) and senior Erin Dougherty (Brentwood,
Tenn./Shanghai American School) finished third in the 1650 freestyle (20:42.95)
to round out W&Ls Top 3 finishers.
W&L returns to action on Sat., Jan. 10, as it travels back to Randolph-Macon
for a 12:00 pm dual meet with the Yellow Jackets.

W&L MEN'S SWIMMING COMPETES IN F&M INVITATIONAL
LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee swimming team was in action
on Friday evening in the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational.In
day one action, only the 1650 freestyle event was swam. Sophomore Clark
Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) kicked off the action by
placing third in the 1650, touching in at 17:22.The Generals will return
to action in the F&M Invitational tomorrow morning.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING WINS BRYN MAWR TRI-MEET
BRYN MAWR, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee womens swimming team emerged
with a pair of victories from the Bryn Mawr tri-meet on Sunday. The Generals
(6-2) defeated Bryn Mawr, 107-97, and bested Arcadia, 169-33.
Senior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School), sophomore
Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) and freshman Abbie Sauter
(Darien, Conn./Darien) all recorded individual event wins for W&L.
Kimble won the 500 Free (5:42.79), Holda took top honors in the 100 Free
(56.10) and Sauter hit the wall first in the 100 Breast (1:13.77).
Kimble and Holda also teamed with junior Laura Westerman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty)
and senior Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) for a first-place
time of 8:37.70 in the 800 Free Relay.
Both the W&L mens and womens swimming teams return to
action on Fri., Dec. 5. The women will compete at the Randolph-Macon Invitational
while the Generals mens squad will travel to the Franklin
& Marshall Invitational.

W&L SWIMMING IN ACTION AT DICKINSON
CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee mens and womens swimming
teams split a pair of decisions at Dickinson on Saturday. The men defeated
the Red Devils 119-86, while the women fell to Dickinson 160-45.
On the mens side sophomore Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South
Mecklenburg) and senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook)
led the Generals (4-0) with a pair of wins each.
Barrineau won the 1000 Free (10:27.45) and the 500 Free (5:05.71), while
Ritter hit the wall first in the 200 Free (1:51.08) and the 100 Back (55.55).
Ritter also teamed with senior Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield
Academy), sophomore Reed Evans (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) and freshman
Michael Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) for a first place time of

W&L WOMENS SWIMMING DOWNS HOLLINS, 135-76
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee womens swimming team continued
its ODAC winning streak, defeating Hollins, 135-76, on Tuesday evening.
Senior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) won a pair of events
as the Generals (4-1, 3-0) took top honors in nine individual events.
Kimble hit the wall first in the 100 Back with a time of 1:07.28 and took
first in the 100 Free with a time of 59.03.
Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) also recorded a win for the W&L
senior class with a top time of 2:31.91 in the 200 Fly. Juniors Tasia
Fisher (Stoney Creek, Conn./Sacred Heart) and Suzie LaFleur (Natick, Mass./Montrose)
each recorded a first place, with wins in the 500 Free (6:19.27) and 50
Free (27.40), respectively.
The Generals freshman class contributed three event victories behind
the swimming of Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien), Michelle Salter (Olympia,
Wash./Timberline) and Sarah Bloom (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley).
Sauter won the 100 Breast (1:14.95), Salter took top honors in the 200
Breast (2:58.77) and Bloom hit the wall first in the 400 IM with a meet
record time of 5:07.28.
The W&L women return to action on Saturday when they travel to Dickinson.

W&L SWIMMING EARNS A PAIR OF VICTORIES AT CATHOLIC
WASHINGTON D.C. -- The Washington and Lee mens and womens
swimming teams earned a pair of victories over Catholic on Sunday. The
Generals mens squad defeated the Cardinals 123.5-81.5, while
the W&L womens squad edged Catholic 103-102.
The Generals mens team (3-0) was led by freshman Michael Ginder
(Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal). Ginder emerged as the only W&L multiple
individual event winner on the day with top honors in the 200 Free (151.81)
and a first-place tie in the 100 Free (48.89). He also teamed up with
senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), freshman Benjamin
Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) and senior Drew Catanese (Southampton,
Mass./Suffield Acad.) for the winning 400 Medley Relay (3:46.49).
Ritter also won the 200 Back (2:01.26), while senior Paul Laraia (Houston,
Texas/Memorial) hit the wall first in the 200 Fly (2:08.92) and teamed
with freshman Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), sophomore
Reed Evans (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) and freshman Maxwell Pike
(Goldsboro, N.C./Wayne Country Day) for top honors in the 400 Free Relay
(3:30.87).
On the womens side the Generals (103-102) started the day top honors
in the 400 Medley Relay when sophomore Keturah Akida (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln),
sophomore Beth Sauer (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh), freshman Abbie Sauter
(Darien, Conn./Darien) and sophomore Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville)
combined for a time of 2:24.14.
Holda also won the 50 Free (26.16) and Sauter won the 200 Breast (2:35.01)
to round out W&Ls multiple event winners.
The W&L womens team returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 18 when
they host Hollins. Meet time is 7:00 p.m.

W&L WOMENS SWIMMING DOWNS SWEET BRIAR, 161-66
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee womens swimming team won
10 individual events as the Generals defeated Sweet Briar, 161-66, in
ODAC action Wednesday night.
Freshman Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien) led W&L with a pair of
wins in the meet. She won the 200 Fly in a time of 2:29.47 and hit the
wall first in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:38.40.
Seniors Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), Mandi Kimble (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day) and Erin Dougherty (Brentwood, Tenn./Shanghai American),
as well as junior Laura Westerman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman
Sarah Bloom (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) all won freestyle events
for the Generals. Green took first in the 100 Free (1:00.96), Kimble won
the 1000 Free (12:03.72) and Dougherty led all competitors in the 500
Free (6:04.34). Westerman won the 200 Free (2:10.97) and Bloom took top
honors in the 50 free with a time of 27.40.
The W&L sophomore class recorded a stellar day as Keturah Akida (Vincennes,
Ind./Lincoln), Beth Sauer (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and Kristina Holda
(Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) each recorded a victory. Akida was first
in the 100 Back (1:05.89), Sauer won the 100 Breast (1:18.57) and Holda
finished tops in the 200 IM (2:26.86).
The Generals return to action on Sunday, Nov. 9, when they travel to Catholic.

W&L MENS SWIMMING DEFEATS VMI, 117-88
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team downed
Virginia Military Institute, 117-88, in non-conference action on Saturday
morning at the Cy Twombly Pool.
Senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and freshman Mike
Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) led all Generals (2-0) with a pair
of victories each. Ritter took top honors in the 200 Free (1:52.42) and
won the 100 Back with a B-cut time of 53.06. Ginder won the 100 Free (49.25)
and the 50 Free (22.83).
Senior Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Acad.) and freshman
Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) rounded out the event
winners for W&L. Catanese won the 100 Fly with a time of 54.63, while
Hayes hit the wall first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.27.
The Generals return to action on Sunday, Nov. 9, when they travel to Catholic.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee womens swimming team defeated
Randolph-Macon Womans College, 162-100, in ODAC action on Wednesday
night.
Senior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) led all Generals
(1-1, 1-0) with three first-place finishes. She took top honors in the
100 Back (1:07.58), the 200 Back (2:24.08) and the 500 Free (5:49.66).
Junior Suzie LaFleur (Natick, Mass./Montrose), sophomore Beth Sauer (Reistertown,
Md./McDonogh), as well as freshmen Sarah Bloom (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant
Valley) and Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien) all won events for W&L.
LaFleur took top honors in the 50 Free (27.35), Sauer won the 1000 Free
(12:41.67), Bloom won the 200 Breast (2:44.58), and Sauter hit the wall
first in the 100 Fly (1:04.84).
The Generals return to action on Wed., Nov. 5, when they host Sweet Briar.

W&L MENS SWIMMING OPENS 2003-04 CAMPAIGN
WITH 135-66 WIN OVER TRANSLYVANIA; WOMEN FALL 142-62
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee mens swimming team opened
its season with a 135-66 victory over Transylvania on Saturday. The Generals
womens squad fell to the Pioneers, 142-62.
For the men, senior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and
freshman Mike Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) each won a pair of
events. Ritter won the 200 Free and 200 Back with times of 1:48.80 and
2:01.17, while Ginder finished ahead of the pack in the 50 Free (22.80)
and 100 Free (50.15).
On the womens side, sophomore Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville)
and freshman Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien) were the only Generals
to win an event. Holda took top honors in the 100 Free (56.47), while
Sauter won the 200 Breast (2:37.04).
The Washington and Lee womens team returns to action on Wednesday,
when the Generals host Randolph-Macon Womans College. Meet time
is 6:00 p.m.
