NCAA Championships
March 19-21, 1998 - St. Louis, Mo.
Washington and Lee sophomore Jared Fribush earned honorable mention
All-America honors after placing 12th in the 50-yard freestyle at the
NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the St. Peter's
Rec Plex on Thursday night.
Fribush matched his career-best time of 21.15 seconds to post the 12th
place finish. He swam a time of 21.25 seconds inthe morning qualifier and
was seeded 16th heading into the consolation finals, but shaved a tenth
of a second off his time to move up four spots.
Fribush also placed 31st in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:47.89
and 38th in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 48.13.
SCAC Invitational
February 19-21, 1998 -- Sewanee, Tenn.
Washington and Lee placed third of eight schools at the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Invitational in men's swimming. Host
Sewanee won the event which finished late Saturday night with a score of
721. Trinity (Texas) University was second with 642 points and W&L had
397 points.
Freshman Colin Hayes led the Generals with a pair of victories and a
second place finish. Hayes won the 200-yard butterfly in a NCAA Division
III championship provisional qualifying time of 1:55.99 and also won the
400-yard individual medley while placing second in the 100-yard
butterfly. Sophomore Jared Fribush also posted a NCAA provisional
qualifying mark with a time of 21.15 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.
Fribush placed third in the event.
W&L also set a meet and pool record in winning the 400-yard medley relay
in a time of 3:32.16, less than a second off the school record. Swimming
on that relay team were freshman Rob Little, senior John Reed, Hayes and
Fribush.
Mary Washington 103, W&L 94
January 31, 1998 -- Fredericksburg, Va.
W&L led 92-88 heading into the final event, but Mary Washington won the
400 yard freestyle relay to defeat the Generals 103-94. Leading the
Generals was sophomore Jared Fribush who won the 50 (21.96) and 100
(49.01) yard freestyle events and anchored W&L's winning 400 yard medley
relay team. Other winners for the Generals were freshman Mike Miraglia
(1,000 free, 10:44.52), freshman Rob Little (200 IM, 2:06.09) and senior
John Reed (200 breast, 2:23.40. W&L finishes the dual meet portion of its
schedule with a 4-7 record. The Generals next action will be at the SCAC
Invitational at the University of the South on February 19-21.
Emory 87, W&L 44
Johns Hopkins 110, W&L 24
January 25, 1998 -- Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Generals dropped a pair of meets on Super Bowl Sunday at the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. W&L fell to Emory 87-44 and to
Johns Hopkins 110-24. W&L swam six season best times at the meet which
was highlighted by the performance of freshman Rob Little. Little swam
W&L's top times this year in the 100 back (57.36) and 200 back (2:02.29)
and the 400 IM (4:28.17) while placing second in the 200 back. Sophomore
Jared Fribush placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and W&L also got
season best times from Jon Reed in the 100 breast (1:03.56), Colin Hayes
in the 100 butterfly (54.85) and the 200 medley relay team (1:42.28).
W&L 95, Goucher 44
Catholic 120, W&L 82
January 17, 1998
The Generals split a pair of meets on Saturday and are now 4-4
for the season. In the morning the Generals beat Goucher 95-44 and in the
afternoon they fell to Catholic 120-82.
Sophomore Jared Fribush and freshmen Colin Hayes and Rob Little
won two individual events in both meets. Fribush swept the 50 and 100
yard freestyle evnts in both meets, swimming a season best time of 49.90
in the 100 against Catholic. Hayes won the 200 free and the butterfly in
both meets while Little swept the backstroke while winning the 400 IM
against Goucher and the 1,000 free against Catholic.
W&L 107, Buffalo State 36
January 13, 1998 -- Lexington, Va.
The Generals won their second straight meet to improve to 3-3 for
the season, defeating Buffalo State 107-36. The Generals won every race
and were led by double winners Jared Fribush (200, 500 freestyle), James
Browne (50 free, 100 fly) and John Reed (100 free, 100 breast). W&L
freshman Rob Little also set a meet record in winning the 100 backstroke
in a time of 57.36 seconds, breaking the mark of 58.40 set by Craig Sears
in 1995. W&L swims at Goucher and Catholic on Saturday.
W&L 109, Marymount 62
December 10, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
Sophomore Jared Fribush and freshmen Colin Hayes and Rob Little
each won two events to lead the W&L men's swimming team to a 109-62
victory over Marymount on Wednesday evening. The victory gives W&L a 2-3
record heading into the exam break. The Generals will be idle until
hosting Buffalo State on January 13.
Fribush won the 50 (22.43) and 100 (50.37) yard freestyle events.
Hayes won the 100 butterfly (56.03) and 500 yard freestyle (5:15.92).
LIttle won the 100 yard backstroke (59.04) and 400 individual medley
(4:35.28).
VMI 110, W&L 89
December 6, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
Washington and Lee's men's swimming team fell to 1-3 for the
season with a 110-89 loss to cross-town rival VMI on Saturday. The loss
was W&L's first loss to VMI since suffering a 52-51 defeat on November
15, 1979. Jared Fribush was the lone General to win multiple events, as
he won the 50 yard free (22.29) and the 100 yard free (50.51). Also
winning for W&L were Mike Miraglia in the 200 yard individual medley
(2:10.45), Colin Hayes in the 100 yard butterfly (56.43) and Jon Reed in
the 100 yard breast (1:04.22). Eric Samaritoni was a triple winner for
the Keydets, winning the 200 (1:50.92), 500 (5:14.03) and the 1000
(11:01.94) yard freestyle events. The Generals will host Marymount on
Wednesday at 6:00 PM, and then will not swim again until after the
Christmas break.
Sewanee 118, W&L 75
November 15, 1997 -- Sewanee, Tenn.
The Generals fell to 1-2 for the season with a 118-75 loss to
Sewanee on Saturday. Colin Hayes was the lone winner for W&L, as he took
first in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:05.53. Jared Fribush took
second in the 50-yard free in a career best time of 22.02 seconds, and
the 400-yard medley relay team of Rob Little, John Reed, Hayes and
Fribush placed second in a time of 3:46.97. The Generals will be off until
December 6 when they host cross-town rival VMI.
W&L 117, Centre 70
November 8, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
First year W&L coach Andrew Pulsifer picked up his first
collegiate win as a head coach as the Generals defeated Centre College
117-70 on Saturday. Freshman Colin Hayes was a triple winner to lead the
Generals. Hayes won the 200 Individual Medley (2:10.45), the 200 fly
(2:10.50) and the 500 free (5:12.21), while fellow freshman Rob Little
won the 200 free (1:54.55) and the 200 back (2:05.28). W&L will swim at
Sewanee next Saturday at 11:00 AM.
Transylvania 113, W&L 92
November 1, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
The Generals lost their season opener 113-92 to visiting
Transylvania on Saturday. Sophomore Jared Fribush led the way with two
wins, as he took first in the 50 free (22.36) and the 100 free (50.28).
Rob Little chipped in by winning the 200 back (2:04.22), and Fribush and
Little teamed with John Reed and Colin Hayes to win the 400 medley relay.
W&L will host Centre next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
