May 9, 1997 -- NCAA East Regional @ Emory
	The Generals saw their 1997 season come to an end, as W&L was 
defeated by Salisbury State 6-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division 
III South Regional on Friday. The Generals lost at both #1 and #2 singles 
to lose the doubles point, and then could manage only a three set 
victory from Glenn Miller at #6 singles to account for the 6-1 score. 
With the loss, W&L finishes the season with a 12-7 overall record, 
marking the third straight year they have finished above .500.

W&L 1st of 10 teams at ODAC Championships
April 25-26, 1997 -- Lexington, Va,
	W&L won its second straight ODAC championship and 12th in the 
last 13 years, by outdistancing second place Hampden-Sydney by nine 
points. The Generals won five of six singles flights and swept the three 
doubles flights to score 71 points, while Hampden-Sydney placed second 
with 62 points. W&L and Hampden-Sydney faced off in eight of the nine 
finals, including all six singles flights, and the Generals won seven of 
those eight finals. Pete Hammond won at both #1 singles and #1 doubles, 
and was named the ODAC Player of the Year, while head coach Gary Franke 
was named the ODAC Coach of the Year.

April 20, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
	The Generals finished up the regular season with a 7-0 victory 
over Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday. 
With the win, W&L finishes the regular season with a 12-6 overall mark 
and a perfect 6-0 ODAC record, and will play at the ODAC championships 
beginning on Friday at W&L.

	The Generals won a key south region match by defeating Methodist 
7-0 on Friday. W&L, ranked fifth in the south region of Division III, won

point, and then swept Methodist, ranked seventh in the south, in singles 
to take the 7-0 victory.

	The Generals improved to 8-4 for the season, 3-0 in the Old 
Dominion Athletic Conference, with a 6-1 win over Middlebury on Sunday in 
a non conference match. W&L took all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 
lead after doubles play, and then won five of the six singles matches, four 
in straight sets, to take the 6-1 victory. W&L will play an ODAC match at 
Lynchburg on Wednesday, before taking 12 days off for exams.

	The Generals had their six match winning streal snapped, as 
Averett knocked off W&L 4-3 in a non conference match on Thursday. With 
the loss, the Generals fall to 7-4 for the season, 3-0 in Old Dominion 
Athletic Conference. The Generals lost the doubles point, but rallied to 
win #4, #5, and #6 singles in straight sets, before losing #2 and #3 
singles in straight sets to see the match tied at 3-3. Number one singles 
player Peter Hammond lost his first set before taking the second set at 
love, but then lost a tough three set match, as Averett went on for the 
4-3 victory.

	The Generals won their sixth match in a row, by defeating cross 
town rival VMI 5-2. W&L lost the doubles point, and then Pete Hammond was 
defeated in two sets at #1 singles, and VMI was ahead 2-0. However, the 
Generals would fight back to win the remainder of the singles matches to 
take the match 5-2. With the win, W&L improves to 7-3 for the season, 3-0 
in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. W&L is ranked fifth in the south 
region, and will host Averett, eighth in the south, on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
