W&L MEN’S TENNIS WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's tennis team claimed its 21st ODAC championship in the last 26 years and its seventh in a row on Sunday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. The Generals took the championship of all six singles and all three doubles flights. Senior Rhys James (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) was named the ODAC Player of the Year after winning the No. 1 singles and doubles flights. SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men’s tennis team was competing in the ITA/Rolex South Region Championships on Saturday afternoon. All three singles competitors and both doubles team remaining from the first day of competition were defeated.

In singles, seniors Rhys James (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and Andrew Roberts (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) and freshman Paul McClure (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) won their first match of the day to advance to the round of eight. All three were then defeated. James fell to Conner Smith of Mary Washington, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Roberts was defeated by Kayvon Fatahalian of Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, 6-2. McClure was defeated by Jose Lajarraga of Washington College, 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, the team of James and Roberts made it to the semifinals with an opening round win before falling to Fatahalian and Hui of Carnegie Mellon, 8-5. Sophomores K.C. Schaeffer (Troy, Ohio/Troy) and Austin Kim (Richmond, Va./Clover Hill) fell to Jose Lajarraga and Seth Morgan of Washington College in the quarterfinals, 8-3.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men’s tennis team advanced three singles players and two doubles teams following the first day of competition at the ITA/Rolex South Region Championships held on the campus of Swarthmore College.

Seniors Andrew Roberts (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) and Rhys James (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and freshman Paul McClure (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) all advanced to the round of 16 in singles following a pair of wins.

Sophomores Austin Kim (Richmond, Va./Clover Hill), K.C. Schaeffer (Troy, Ohio/Troy) and Graham Nix (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) were all knocked from the bracket following losses. Kim and Schaffer both posted wins in their opening matches.

The duo of James and Roberts and the team of Schaeffer and Kim advanced to the round of eight following two wins. McClure and Nix were defeated in the second round of action.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s tennis team faired very well during its Fall Tennis Classic as the Generals took one singles flight and one doubles flight.

Freshman Marshall Viney (Midland, Texas/Robert E. Lee) took the championship of the No. 4 singles flight, defeating Rob Gould of Davidson, 7-5, 6-2 in the finals.

Sophomore K.C. Schaeffer (Troy, Ohio/Troy) was the runner-up in the No. 2 singles flight, dropping the championship match to Jonathan Britt of Davidson, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Paul McClure (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) was the runner-up in the No. 3 singles flight, falling to Davidson’s Geoffrey Mullen, 6-2, 6-1, in the finals.

In the championship of the No. 2 doubles flight, McClure and freshman Jeff Lusk (Shreveport, La./Captain Shreve) squared off against their teammates in sophomore Graham Nix (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) and senior Zac Vuncannon (Asheboro, N.C./Greensboro Country Day). Nix and Vuncannon would emerge with a 9-8 (2) victory.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Oct. 6-8 as it participates in the ITA Southeast Regional at Swarthmore College.

W&L MEN’S TENNIS FAIRS WELL IN DAY ONE OF W&L FALL CLASSIC

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s tennis team faired very well during the first day of its Fall Tennis Classic on Saturday afternoon, advancing three players to the singles finals and three doubles teams to the semifinals.

Sophomore K.C. Schaeffer (Troy, Ohio/Troy) advanced to the finals of the No. 2 singles flight by defeating Nick Lewis of Davidson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and John Bunton of Davidson, 6-1, 6-0. He will meet Davidson’s Jonathan Britt in the finals on Sunday.

Freshman Paul McClure (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) moved on to the finals of the No. 3 singles flight by defeating Neeray Pilly of the College of New Jersey, 6-2, 6-1, and Russ Burns of Davidson, 6-2, 6-4. He will face Davidson’s Geoffrey Mullen in the finals.

McClure and freshman Jeff Lusk (Shreveport, La./Captain Shreve) along with sophomore Graham Nix (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) and senior Zac Vuncannon (Asheboro, N.C./Greensboro Country Day) all advanced to the semifinals of the No. 2 doubles flight.

Teams participating in the tournament are The College of New Jersey, VMI, Davidson and Washington and Lee.
