Royal Track Classic April 18, 1998 -- Harrisonburg, Va. Senior Omar Moneim dominated the throwing events to lead W&L to a second place finish at the Royal Track Classic at Eastern Mennonite. Moneim won the discus (137-2), shot put (43-11) and finished second in the javelin (159-2) to score 28 points individually at the meet. W&L had at least two athletes place in every throwing event, led by Marc Granger in third in the shot put and Leigh Miller in third in the javelin. W&L had a number of third place finishes at the meet, including Greg Ruthig with a season-best time of 1:58.10 in the 800. Paul Shea took third in the 110 hurdles and also placed fourth in the 400 hurdles.
at Lynchburg Invitational April 11, 1998 -- Lynchburg, Va. W&L's men's track team returned from a two-week layoff for exams by partipating in the Lynchburg Classic and senior Greg Ruthig continued his outstanding season. Ruthig won the 1,500 in a time of 4:04.17 to lead the Generals. Senior Omar Moneim finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 44-1 and senior Jason Callen was the only other General to place, taking sixth in the 5,000. Senior Taylor Shultz took seventh in the 800 and 1,500.
at Bridgewater Invitational and Battleground Relays March 28, 1998 Washington and Lee split its men's track and field squads on Saturday with the distance runners going to the Battleground Relays at Mary Washington College and the rest of the team went to the Bridgewater College Invitational. Senior Omar Moneim led the contingent at Bridgewater, winning the shot put (44-8 1/2) and javelin (152-3 1/2) while placing third in the discus (118-6). W&L dominated the throwing events as Marc Granger was second in the shot (41-3), Leigh Miller was second in the javelin (146-10 3/4) and Chris Wahl was third in the shot (40-4 1/4). Other top performers for the Generals were Brian Huse who placed third in the long jump (21-3) and fourth in the high jump (5-10) and Hansell Pasco was third in the 200 (22.91) and fourth in the 100 (11.56). At the Battleground Relays W&L's senior quartet of Greg Ruthig, Taylor Shultz, Jason Callen and Will Olson placed third in the distance medley relay and Ruthig took fifth in the 1,500 (4:09).
6th of 12 at Roanoke Invitational March 21, 1998 -- Salem, Va. The distance medley relay team of Taylor Shultz, Jason Miller, Ryan Bowe and Will Olson took top honors to lead the men's track team at the Roanoke Invitational. The Generals team ran a time of 11:04.30 to beat Gettysburg by nearly eight seconds. In other events, W&L took the third, fourth and fifth spots in the shot put with Omar Moneim, Marc Granger and Chris Wahl all placing. Jason Callen took fourth in the 1,500. W&L finished tied with St. Paul's for sixth place in the 12-team meet.
4th of 12 at W&L Invitational March 14, 1998 -- Lexington, Va. W&L senior Greg Ruthig took first place in the 1,500 and second in the 800 to lead the men's track team to a fourth place finish at the 7th Annual W&L Invitational. Also finishing in second for the Generals were Omar Moneim in the shot put and Will Olson in the 1,500.Complete Results
ODAC Indoor Championships Feb. 28, 1998 -- Lynchburg, Va. Team Scores Lynchburg 123 Wash. & Lee 44 Bridgewater 43 Roanoke 24 Washington and Lee won the 4x880 yard relay and took the top three spots in the shot put to edge out Bridgewater by one point for second place at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Lynchburg. The host Hornets won the meet with 123 points. The second place finish for the Generals was the best since a runner-up finish in 1994. Senior Omar Moneim won the shot put with a throw of 46-2 1/2 and was followed by teammates Marc Granger and Chris Wahl in the event. Other top performers for the Generals were senior Will Olson who took second in the mile and third in 3,200; senior Jason Callen who was second in the 3,200 and senior Taylor Shultz who was third in the mile.
VMI Winter Relays -- Feb. 7, 1998 -- Lexington, Va. Senior Omar Moneim led the Generals at the 46th Annual VMI Winter Relays with a fourth place finish, throwing a distance of 46-2. Other top 10 finishes for the Generals came in the 1,600 meter run with senior Greg Ruthig taking ninth (4:40.64) and senior Taylor Shultz taking 10th (4:41.00). Sophomore Hansell Pasco set two personal bests, running 6.86 in the 55 meter dash and running 23.67 to place 11th of 47 competitors in the 200 meter dash.

Lebanon Valley Invitational -- Jan. 24, 1998 -- Annville, Pa. The Generals opened their indoor season at the Lebanon Valley Invitational and were led by senior Greg Ruthig who won the 800 meter run in a time of 2:07.5. Senior Omar Moneim also placed high for the Generals, taking second place in the shot put with a throw of 44-5. Other W&L athletes to place were Will Olson who was fifth in the 1500 (4:15.0) and freshman Jacek Mucha who was sixth in the high jump (6-0).
