Becomes First W&L Wrestler Since 1988-89 To Attend Nationals
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee freshman wrestler Joe Mueller (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) became the first General since the 1988-89 season to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships after winning the 184-pound weight class at the Centennial Conference Championships this past weekend.
The NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships will be held at Wartburg College's Young Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. The first day of competition will begin on Friday, March 2, at 10:30 am.
Mueller, who improved to 8-13 overall on the season, defeated second-seeded Aaron Moak of Johns Hopkins, 9-4, in the semifinals, before defeating top-seeded Morgan Douglas of Gettysburg, 11-6, in the finals to earn the automatic bid to nationals.
He is the first W&L wrestler to win a Centennial Conference Championship and the first national qualifier since All-American Rich Redfoot during the 1988-89 season.
