Four First Teamers Most of Any Division III School

LEXINGTON, Va. -- After earning a No. 3 preseason ranking and posting six preseason All-Americans in Faceoff 2001 Men's College Lacrosse Yearbook, the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team received even more recognition as five players were named to the Street & Smith's College Lacrosse USA Preseason All-America team announced on Tuesday morning.

Washington and Lee claimed four of the 13 first team selections, more than any other Division III school. Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes), senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), senior defenseman Pete Iwancio (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) and senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) each garnered first team honors, while senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) was named to the third team squad.

Dugan earned First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-America honors last season after tallying 55 goals and 32 assists for 87 points. He enters the 2001 season with 228 career points, just seven shy of breaking the W&L record.

Hackney was a First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-America selection in 2000 after scoring 31 goals and dishing 18 assists for 49 points. He also won 63.5 percent of his faceoffs (40-23).

Iwancio also earned First Team All-ODAC honors last season and was a Third Team All-America selection. He helped spearhead a defense that ranked as the second stingiest in Division III, allowing an average of just 5.78 goals per game.

Hays earned Second Team All-ODAC and Honorable Mention All-America honors last season. He finished second in Division III in goals-against average (5.85 gpg) and posted a .607 save percentage.

Norton was a Second Team All-ODAC and Honorable Mention All-America choice last season after he totaled 29 goals and 17 assists for 46 points.

Washington and Lee returns 24 letterwinners to the fold this season, including nine of its top 13 scorers from last year's 16-2 squad that advanced to the NCAA Division III semifinals before falling to Salisbury State, 10-9.
