LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced that 99 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
Additionally, nine of the students honored achieved grade point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were senior men's basketball captain Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin), freshman women's soccer and basketball player Heather Coleman (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional), senior men's soccer player Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Mich./Jackson), sophomore football player Andrew James (El Dorado, Ark./El Dorado), sophomore football player John Melillo (Wichita, Kan./Belle Plaine), freshman men's swimmer Colin Mitchell (Calgary, Alberta/Springbank), freshman men's track athlete Ken Walker (Glen Allen, Va./Collegiate), sophomore women's soccer player Ruth-Hill Yielding (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and freshman men's lacrosse player Jimmy Zunka (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield).
Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included junior All-ODAC, All-State and All-Region football player Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day), senior academic all-america wrestler Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), senior All-ODAC and All-Region women's soccer player Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), senior All-ODAC and All-America men's lacrosse player Pete Iwancio (Baltimore, Md./Loyola), junior All-ODAC women's basketball player Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), senior All-ODAC cross country runner Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays), senior All-ODAC and All-America men's lacrosse player Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall), senior All-ODAC, All-State and All-Region cross country runner Jessica Parrillo (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), junior All-ODAC women's soccer player Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) and sophomore All-ODAC women's tennis player Brandi Jane Wedgeworth (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian).
Fifteen of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the riding team with a 3.325. The highest men's team GPA was the men's tennis team with a 3.190 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.899.
W&L had an outstanding fall season on the playing fields as well. W&L's eight fall sports teams combined for a record of 60-31 (.659) with men's soccer and women's cross country claiming ODAC Championships.
