Nine Attain a 4.0 or Higher Grade-Point Average for the Winter Semester

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced that 103 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, nine of the students honored achieved grade point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were sophomore football player Mack Ewing (Vincennes, Ind./Deerfield Academy), senior men's soccer player Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Mich./Jackson), sophomore men's lacrosse player Greg Hendler (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin), junior field hockey player Amie Lucier (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy), junior field hockey player Deidre MacLeod (Weston, Mass./Weston), sophomore football player John Melillo (Wichita, Kan./Belle Plaine), senior women's soccer and track athlete Liz Olson (Brookfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), junior women's basketball player Carter Thomas (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and sophomore football player Jay Thomas (Houston, Texas/Kincaid).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included junior All-ODAC, All-State and All-American football player Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day), senior All-ODAC and All-State football player Will Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), sophomore All-ODAC men's tennis player Chase Bice (Wichita Falls, Texas/Wichita Falls), freshman All-ODAC women's swimmer Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), senior All-ODAC and All-Region women's soccer player Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hills), senior All-ODAC, All-State, All-Region and All-American football player Justin Holton (Pittsburg, Texas/Pittsburg), senior All-ODAC and All-American men's lacrosse player Pete Iwancio (Baltimore, Md./Loyola), freshman All-ODAC men's tennis player Austin Kim (Richmond, Va./Clover Hill), junior All-ODAC and All-State women's basketball player Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), sophomore All-ODAC women's swimmer Michelle Moore (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy), senior All-ODAC and All-State women's cross country runner Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays), senior All-ODAC, All-State and All-Region women's cross country and track athlete Jessica Parrillo (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), sophomore All-ODAC and All-American women's tennis player Erika Proko (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day), freshman All-ODAC men's tennis player K.C. Schaefer (Troy, Ohio/Troy), junior All-ODAC women's basketball and track athlete Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) and sophomore All-ODAC women's tennis player Brandi Jane Wedgeworth (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian).

Seventeen of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's cross country team with a 3.468. The highest men's team GPA was men's cross country with a 3.238 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.803.

The women's teams combined for a 3.152 GPA, while the men's teams combined to post a 2.992 GPA.
